Combined Effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation and the Arctic Oscillation on Sea Surface Temperature in the Alborán Sea

We explored the possible effects of the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and Arctic Oscillation (AO) on interannual sea surface temperature (SST) variations in the Albora´n Sea, both separately and combined. The probability of observing mean annual SST values higher than average was related to NAO and AO values of the previous year. The effect of NAO on SST was negative, while that of AO was positive. The pure effects of NAO and AO on SST are obscuring each other, due to the positive correlation between them. When decomposing SST, NAO and AO in seasonal values, we found that variation in mean annual SST and mean winter SST was significantly related to the mean autumn NAO of the previous year, while mean summer SST was related to mean autumn AO of the previous year. The one year delay in the effect of the NAO and AO on the SST could be partially related to the amount of accumulated snow, as we found a significant correlation between the total snow in the North Albora´n watershed for a year with the annual average SST of the subsequent year. A positive AO implies a colder atmosphere in the Polar Regions, which could favour occasional cold waves over the Iberian Peninsula which, when coupled with precipitations favoured by a negative NAO, may result in snow precipitation. This snow may be accumulated in the high peaks and melt down in spring-summer of the following year, which consequently increases the runoff of freshwater to the sea, which in turn causes a diminution of sea surface salinity and density, and blocks the local upwelling of colder water, resulting in a higher SST.CGL2009-11316 (Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación, Spain, and FEDER

    Get PDF
The present pilot study was carried out with a sample of 131 handball umpires of Spain, with the aim of adapting the Decision Making Questionnaire II (DMQ-II questionaire) and developing an instrument that may help to study individual differences in decision making. Three factors were extracted:stress management and decision making; quick decision making with uncertainty; and determination and commitment to decision making. The factorial structure of the data, as well as the values of internal consistency of the scales, confirm the existence of different patterns of behaviour

Clinical and pathological aspects and cerebellar lectin binding in cattle poisoned with Solanum fastigiatum var. fastigiatum and Solanum bonariense

Microscopic and lectin histochemical studies were performed using the cerebella of 33 natural cases of Solanum fastigiatum var. fastigiatum intoxication in the cattle from southern Brazil and 2 natural and 4 experimental cases of Solanum bonariense from Uruguay. The following biotinylated lectins were used in both cases: WGA, sWGA, BS-I, Con-A, RCA-I, DBA, and UEA-I, with the addition of LCA in S. fastigiatum poisoning cases. Histologically, the lesions consisted of fine vacuolization, distention of portions of the Purkinje cells, axonal spheroids measuring 14-50 m in the granular cell layer and adjacent white matter and, proliferation of the Bergmann?s glia. Lectin histochemistry revealed strong reactivity of stored material in Purkinje neurons with the lectins sWGA, Con-A, and LCA in S. fastigiatum cases. A similar pattern was found in S. bonariense cases with a most intense reactions to WGA, and less intense reaction to Con-A, whereas BS-I and RCA-I binding was absent to poor in these neurons in all the cases studied.Lectin reactivity in Purkinje cells between cases was independent of cell damage (from mild to severe loss of neurons). Both S. fastigiatum and S. bonariense have similar lectin binding,  suggesting a similar pathogenesis. Since comparable binding patterns have been described in animals poisoned with swainsonine-containing plants, perhaps the toxins in these plants contain related glycosidaseinhibiting toxins or inhibit glycoprotein and lysosomal metabolism through some related mechanism. The results of this study showed that in spontaneous poisoning by S. fastigiatum and S. bonariense in the cattle, the pattern of lectin binding is similar to those observed in S. fastigiatum experimental conditions.Fil: Sant’Ana, Fabiano J.F.. There is a lack of consensus when it comes to explaining how CSR actions are related to firm performance. Our research helps to understand this relationship through mediating effects such as CSR-oriented human resource management and customer satisfaction because employees and customers are critical stakeholders of companies and contribute directly to the determination of the corporate results. Through a study on a sample of small and medium-sized Spanish food and beverage manufacturing companies, and by using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM), we found that CSR does indeed impact business performance when CSR actions are mainly oriented towards more efficient management of human resources and customer satisfaction. In this way, the results lead us to conclude that depending on the stakeholder to which these actions are oriented, a specific orientation of the company’s CSR policy can be more efficient in corporate performanc

Synthesis, Photochemical, and Redox Properties of Gold(I) and Gold(III) Pincer Complexes Incorporating a 2,2′:6′,2″-Terpyridine Ligand Framework

    Get PDF
Reaction of [Au(C6F5)(tht)] (tht = tetrahydrothiophene) with 2,2′:6′,2″-terpyridine (terpy) leads to complex [Au(C6F5)(η1-terpy)] (1). The chemical oxidation of complex (1) with 2 equiv of [N(C6H4Br-4)3](PF6) or using electrosynthetic techniques affords the Au(III) complex [Au(C6F5)(η3-terpy)](PF6)2 (2). The X-ray diffraction study of complex 2 reveals that the terpyridine acts as tridentate chelate ligand, which leads to a slightly distorted square-planar geometry. Complex 1 displays fluorescence in the solid state at 77 K due to a metal (gold) to ligand (terpy) charge transfer transition, whereas complex 2 displays fluorescence in acetonitrile due to excimer or exciplex formation. Time-dependent density functional theory calculations match the experimental absorption spectra of the synthesized complexes. In order to further probe the frontier orbitals of both complexes and study their redox behavior, each compound was separately characterized using cyclic voltammetry. The bulk electrolysis of a solution of complex 1 was analyzed by spectroscopic methods confirming the electrochemical synthesis of complex 2

1,4-Bis(2′-pyridylethynyl)benzene as a ligand in heteronuclear gold–thallium complexes. Influence of the ancillary ligands on their optical properties

    Get PDF
The reaction of 1,4-bis(2′-pyridylethynyl)benzene (L) with [{Au(C6X5)2}Tl]n affords new heterometallic AuI/TlI complexes with different stoichiometries, structural arrangements and optical properties depending on the halogens present in the aryl group. The chlorinated derivative [{Au(C6Cl5)2}Tl(L)]n (1) displays polymeric chains built thanks to unsupported Au⋯Tl interactions and bridging bidentate ligands between adjacent chains, while in the fluorinated species [{Au(C6F5)2}2Tl2(L)2]n (2), also containing N-donor bridging ligands and Au⋯Tl contacts, polymerization occurs via Tl⋯Caryl non-bonding interactions between neighbouring molecules. The optical properties of 1 and 2 have been studied experimentally and theoretically, concluding that the luminescence of 1 in the solid state has its origin in the Au⋯Tl interactions, and that the Tl⋯Caryl interactions in 2 favour a non-radiative deactivation pathway that avoids luminescence. The strength of the non-bonding interactions present in 1 has also been theoretically studied at the HF and MP2 levels, revealing the metallophilic contact as the strongest one. This work was supported by the D.G.I. In this study, we analyze concisely the evolution of the forms adopted by the script of the Crown of Aragon, from 1137 until 1474. The chronological period analyzed includes the formal variations of the gothic and the humanistic ones. We have not only described the external aspect and the chronology for both of them, but we have also tried to rebuild the different contexts of use of the writing and the formal characteristics that it adopted, as far as the different functionality is concerned. Given that the most studied field is the Royal Cancillería, its documentation forms the leading thread of this article. Moreover, ocher material (epigraphic, phylactery, from books, etc.) will allow us to rebuild the whole history of medieval script used in the different fields.

    Get PDF

To determine the physiological answer of the reactive protein C (RPC) and the speed of globular sedimentation (SGS) after non infected total hip arthroplasty (THA). Material and methods: a descriptive study on a total sample of 20 patients suffering primary coxarthrosis and operated with THA was performed (18 patients with cemented Auto-Fit Prosthesis and 2 patients with cementless Prophor Prosthesis). The values of SGS, RPC, fibrinogen and morning body temperature were determined before the surgical proce- dure and on day 1, 2, 3, 7, 14 and 90 after it. Results: an ANOVA test was used for repeated measurements of the obtained results. There were statistically significant differences in the levels of RPC obtained in the different days of the study (p<0.001), obtaining the highest levels of it on day 2 after surgery and highly decreasing from day 7 after surgery onwards. Conclusions: the maintenance of increased levels of RPC or the appearance of new peaks after the day 2 or 3 after surgery may be an indicator of severe complications in THA
