Two-stage coarsening mechanism in a kinetically constrained model of an attractive colloid
We study an attractive version of the East model using the real-space
renormalization group (RG) introduced by Stella et al. The former is a
kinetically constrained model with an Ising-like interaction between
excitations, and shows striking agreement with the phenomonology of attractive
colloidal systems. We find that the RG predicts two nonuniversal dynamic
exponents, which suggests that in the out-of-equilibrium regime the model
coarsens via a two-stage mechanism. We explain this mechanism physically, and
verify this prediction numerically. In addition, we find that the
characteristic relaxation time of the model is a non-monotonic function of
attraction strength, again in agreement with numerical results.Comment: 10 page

Catastrophic stress corrosion failure of Zr-base bulk metallic glass through hydrogen embrittlement
Zr-base bulk metallic glasses (BMG) are prone to pitting corrosion in halide containing solutions and also stress corrosion cracking (SCC) is often interpreted in this context. This work presents in situ SCC experiments on notched Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 (at.%) BMG bars under 3-point bending in dilute NaCl solution. They show that pitting corrosion is only the initiating process. The pitted areas have a lower local corrosion potential and the reaction of Zr4+ to zirconyl ions in solution produces H+ that can be reduced and absorbed in the local acidic environment. So, hydrogen embrittlement causes the observed catastrophic failure and peculiar fracture surface characteristics. © 2019 The Author
Force-induced unfolding of a homopolymer on fractal lattice: exact results vs. mean field predictions
We study the force-induced unfolding of a homopolymer on the three
dimensional Sierpinski gasket. The polymer is subject to a contact energy
between nearest neighbour sites not consecutive along the chain and to a
stretching force. The hierarchical nature of the lattice we consider allows for
an exact treatment which yields the phase diagram and the critical behaviour.
We show that for this model mean field predictions are not correct, in
particular in the exact phase diagram there is {\em not} a low temperature
reentrance and we find that the force induced unfolding transition below the

Galileo dust data from the jovian system: 2000 to 2003
The Galileo spacecraft was orbiting Jupiter between Dec 1995 and Sep 2003.
The Galileo dust detector monitored the jovian dust environment between about 2
and 370 R_J (jovian radius R_J = 71492 km). We present data from the Galileo
dust instrument for the period January 2000 to September 2003. We report on the
data of 5389 particles measured between 2000 and the end of the mission in
2003. The majority of the 21250 particles for which the full set of measured
impact parameters (impact time, impact direction, charge rise times, charge
amplitudes, etc.) was transmitted to Earth were tiny grains (about 10 nm in
radius), most of them originating from Jupiter's innermost Galilean moon Io.
Their impact rates frequently exceeded 10 min^-1. Surprisingly large impact
rates up to 100 min^-1 occurred in Aug/Sep 2000 when Galileo was at about 280
R_J from Jupiter. This peak in dust emission appears to coincide with strong
changes in the release of neutral gas from the Io torus. Strong variability in
the Io dust flux was measured on timescales of days to weeks, indicating large
variations in the dust release from Io or the Io torus or both on such short
timescales. Galileo has detected a large number of bigger micron-sized
particles mostly in the region between the Galilean moons. A surprisingly large
number of such bigger grains was measured in March 2003 within a 4-day interval
when Galileo was outside Jupiter's magnetosphere at approximately 350 R_J
jovicentric distance. Two passages of Jupiter's gossamer rings in 2002 and 2003
provided the first actual comparison of in-situ dust data from a planetary ring

Molecular genetics and pathophysiology of 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 deficiency.
Autosomal recessive mutations in the 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase 3 gene impair the formation of testosterone in the fetal testis and give rise to genetic males with female external genitalia. Such individuals are usually raised as females, but virilize at the time of expected puberty as the result of increases in serum testosterone. Here we describe mutations in 12 additional subjects/families with this disorder. The 14 mutations characterized to date include 10 missense mutations, 3 splice junction abnormalities, and 1 small deletion that results in a frame shift. Three of these mutations have occurred in more than 1 family. Complementary DNAs incorporating 9 of the 10 missense mutations have been constructed and expressed in reporter cells; 8 of the 9 missense mutations cause almost complete loss of enzymatic activity. In 2 subjects with loss of function, missense mutations testosterone levels in testicular venous blood were very low. Considered together, these findings strongly suggest that the common mechanism for testosterone formation in postpubertal subjects with this disorder is the conversion of circulating androstenedione to testosterone by one or more of the unaffected 17 beta-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase isoenzymes
Dome C site testing: surface layer, free atmosphere seeing and isoplanatic angle statistics
This paper analyses 3.5 years of site testing data obtained at Dome C,
Antarctica, based on measurements obtained with three DIMMs located at three
different elevations. Basic statistics of the seeing and the isoplanatic angle
are given, as well as the characteristic time of temporal fluctuations of these
two parameters, which we found to around 30 minutes at 8 m. The 3 DIMMs are
exploited as a profiler of the surface layer, and provide a robust estimation
of its statistical properties. It appears to have a very sharp upper limit
(less than 1 m). The fraction of time spent by each telescope above the top of
the surface layer permits us to deduce a median height of between 23 m and 27
m. The comparison of the different data sets led us to infer the statistical
properties of the free atmosphere seeing, with a median value of 0.36 arcsec.
The C_n^2 profile inside the surface layer is also deduced from the seeing data
obtained during the fraction of time spent by the 3 telescopes inside this
turbulence. Statistically, the surface layer, except during the 3-month summer
season, contributes to 95 percent of the total turbulence from the surface
level, thus confirming the exceptional quality of the site above it
Design considerations for table-top, laser-based VUV and X-ray free electron lasers
A recent breakthrough in laser-plasma accelerators, based upon ultrashort
high-intensity lasers, demonstrated the generation of quasi-monoenergetic
GeV-electrons. With future Petawatt lasers ultra-high beam currents of ~100 kA
in ~10 fs can be expected, allowing for drastic reduction in the undulator
length of free-electron-lasers (FELs). We present a discussion of the key
aspects of a table-top FEL design, including energy loss and chirps induced by
space-charge and wakefields. These effects become important for an optimized
table-top FEL operation. A first proof-of-principle VUV case is considered as
well as a table-top X-ray-FEL which may open a brilliant light source also for
