Selection of AGN candidates in the GOODS-South Field through SPITZER/MIPS 24 μ\mum variability

We present a study of galaxies showing mid-infrared variability in data taken in the deepest Spitzer/MIPS 24 μ\mum surveys in the GOODS-South field. We divide the dataset in epochs and subepochs to study the long-term (months-years) and the short-term (days) variability. We use a χ2\chi^2-statistics method to select AGN candidates with a probability \leq 1% that the observed variability is due to statistical errors alone. We find 39 (1.7% of the parent sample) sources that show long-term variability and 55 (2.2% of the parent sample) showing short-term variability. That is, 0.03 sources ×\times arcmin2^{-2} for both, long-term and short-term variable sources. After removing the expected number of false positives inherent to the method, the estimated percentages are 1.0% and 1.4% of the parent sample for the long-term and short-term respectively. We compare our candidates with AGN selected in the X-ray and radio bands, and AGN candidates selected by their IR emission. Approximately, 50% of the MIPS 24 μ\mum variable sources would be identified as AGN with these other methods. Therefore, MIPS 24 μ\mum variability is a new method to identify AGN candidates, possibly dust obscured and low luminosity AGN, that might be missed by other methods. However, the contribution of the MIPS 24 μ\mum variable identified AGN to the general AGN population is small (\leq 13%) in GOODS-South.Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRA

We present a study of galaxies showing mid-infrared variability in data taken in the deepest Spitzer/MIPS 24 μm surveys in the Great Observatory Origins Deep Survey South field. We divide the data set in epochs and subepochs to study the long-term (months–years) and the short-term (days) variability. We use a χ2-statistics method to select active galactic nucleus (AGN) candidates with a probability ≤1 per cent that the observed variability is due to statistical errors alone. We find 39 (1.7 per cent of the parent sample) sources that show long-term variability and 55 (2.2 per cent of the parent sample) showing short-term variability. Peer Reviewe

Biodiversity is a concept of great scientific interest and social value studied in different subjects of the secondary education curriculum. Citizen–science programs may contribute to increasing the engagement of students when studying biodiversity. This work aimed to explore the use of the citizen–science platform iNaturalist as a complement of the elaboration of herbaria in an outdoor activity for 4th course 16-year-old students in the Basaula Reserve. The platform iNaturalist was chosen for its suitability to develop collaborative projects in an educational context. The Basaula project was created and 122 students were trained to record plant species in an outdoor activity. A total of 32 species were recorded, among them the most abundant were beech (Fagus sylvatica) and holm oak (Quercus ilex). The students positively evaluated their experience, highlighting its adequacy to record biodiversity data and make a virtual herbarium. Students valued the innovative character of iNaturalist and its usefulness for research but also the opportunity to integrate mobile devices in school education. We concluded that iNaturalist is a valuable tool to carry out collaborative projects dealing with biodiversity in secondary education. This research was funded by the Education Department of the Navarra Government, grant number CENEDUCA3/2019

Thermodynamic and Cost Analysis of a Solar Dish Power Plant in Spain Hybridized with a Micro-Gas Turbine

[EN]Small-scale hybrid parabolic dish concentrated solar power systems are a promising option to obtain distributed electricity. During the day, solar energy is used to produce electricity, and the absence of sunlight can be overwhelmed with fuel combustion. This study presents a thermo-economic survey for a hybridized power plant in different regions of Spain, considering the local climatic conditions. The developed model considers the instant solar irradiance and ambient temperature dynamically, providing an estimation of the power output, the associated fuel consumption, and the most relevant pollutant emissions linked to combustion. Hybrid and combustion-only operating modes at selected geographical locations in Spain (with different latitudes, mean solar irradiances, and meteorological conditions) are analyzed. The levelized cost of electricity indicator is estimated as a function of investment, interest rate, maintenance, and fuel consumption actual costs in Spain. Values of about 124 e/MWhe are feasible. Fuel consumption and emissions in hybrid operation can be reduced above 30% with respect to those of the same turbine working in a pure combustion mode. This model shows the potential of hybrid solar dishes to become cost-competitive against non-renewable technologies from the point of view of costs and reduction in gas emission levels in regions with high solar radiation and low water resources.University of Salamanca Grant Number PC-TCUE18-20-002, Junta de Castilla y León of Spain Grant Number SA017P17

Prostate cancer; Systems pathology; Wnt/β-catenin pathwayCàncer de pròstata; Patologia de sistemes; Via Wnt/β-cateninaCáncer de próstata; Patología de sistemas; Vía Wnt/β-cateninaOBJECTIVES: To apply a systems pathology-based approach to the quantification of nuclear Active β-catenin and human leukocyte antigen class I, and assess the biomarker involvement in a cohort of prostate tumor patients. RESULTS: The systems pathology approach applied allows a precise quantification of the marker expression in the different cell compartments as well as the determination of the areas that coexpress two markers. Our data shows that the accumulation of β-catenin in the nuclear compartment is significantly decreased in the adjacent normal areas when compared to tumor of the same patients (p < 0.001). In conclusion, the application of this novel multiple immunofluorescence assay demonstrates that the upregulation of Active β-catenin is a relatively common feature of prostate tumor development, and further supports the activation of the Wnt/β-catenin pathway in prostate cancer progression

Use of IBASPM atlas-based automatic segmentation toolbox in pathological brains: effect of template selection

    Get PDF
Proceeding of: 2008 IEEE Nuclear Science Symposium Conference Record (NSS '08), Dresden, Germany, 19-25 Oct. 2008IBASPM software is an atlas-based method for automatic segmentation of brain structures, available as a freeware toolbox for the SPM package. To test the influence of the atlas when segmenting normal and pathologic brains, manual segmentation of the caudate nucleus head was compared to automatic segmentations using four different atlases: the default MNI AAL atlas; a customized atlas created from a combined sample of patients (n=20) and controls (n=18); and a customized atlas obtained separately for each group. Maximum average ratio of overlapping voxels (dice overlap) between manual and automatic segmentation was 71 o~ for controls and 52% for patients. In both groups, overlap ratios were better when using the customized atlases, instead of the standard MNI AAL atlas. Accuracy of the method was biased between left and right hemispheres, and also between groups, individual variability being higher in patients than in controls. Volumetric measurements using the customized atlases were also more accurate than using the MNI AAL atlas. Volume data were closer to manual segmentation values than dice overlap ratio (average differences ranging from 22.7°~ for MNI AAL atlas to 10.1 for customized atlas of patients and controls combined). Results suggests a low overaU performance of IBASPM as an automatic segmentation method for the head of the caudate nucleus. Because of the biases observed, the use of this method for analyzing caudate nucleus in patients presenting anatomical abnormalities should be cautiously carried out. This work is partially funded by the following projects: CD-TEAM Project, CENIT Program (Spanish Ministerio de Industria)~ FIS PI052271 (Spanish Ministerio de Sanidad y Consumo)~ and Fundación Mutua Madrilen
