Clinical scores for prediction of acute appendicitis in children in a hospital of Lima, Perú

Objective: To determine the usefulness of the Alvarado score and the Pediatric Appendicitis score (PAS) in the Pediatric Emergency of the National Hospital Daniel A. Carrion. Materials and methods: A prospective observational study was carried out of patients younger than 15 years of age with abdominal pain and suspected acute appendicitis (AA) attending the Pediatric Emergency in a Hospital of Lima, Peru. These patients underwent a survey to assess the parameters of the Alvarado score and PAS. Results: Three hundred and seventeen patients with abdominal pain and suspected of AA were recruited over a study period of 12 months. Of the patients, 232 were considered to have AA clinically and underwent surgery. 85.3% were confirmed by pathology and 14.7% were normal. The mean Alvarado score was 8.27±1.31; the mean Surgical Procedure Assessment (SPA) score was 8.08±1.47. Sensitivity and specificity for both scores are equivalent. The area under the curve for the Alvarado score and SPA were 0.887 and 0.901, respectively. Alvarado score higher than 6 had a sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), and accuracy of 88.9, 75.6, 97.4, 68.1, and 86.4%, respectively. SPA higher than 6 points had sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV, and accuracy of 84.3, 80.7, 94.7, 73.1, and 86.7%, respectively. Conclusion: Alvarado score and the PAS are scores with high sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and accuracy for the diagnosis of AA when the score is higher than 6 points. The results found in our study justify their use in emergency services, but they should not be used as the only means of clinically determining the need for surgery.Revisión por pare

¿Qué significa ser joven? Reflexión teórica desde dos ejemplos etnográficos

Desde las ciencias sociales se ha venido construyendo a la juventud como categoría científica y de análisis a partir de una condición etaria. Dicha construcción difícilmente puede ser constituida universalmente. Toda construcción de la “juventud” dependería de contextualizaciones discursivas inmersas en lo que Aníbal Quijano llama “heterogeneidad histórico/estructural” (Quijano: 1989). Así, la aparente “homogeneidad” de la juventud como categoría etaria oculta otras características como la clase, la etnia, el género, la orientación sexual o la religión, que constituyen marcadores adscriptivos para la identificación. Además, diversos autores como Santos, Fanon (1963), Bhabha (1991) o Quijano (1989) han señalado que el enfatizar ciertas características en la constitución de las identificaciones colectivas permite crear formas de opresión hacia esos colectivos, en este caso definidos por la edad. Sin embargo, como miembros de diferentes grupos sociales, los identificados –y a veces auto-identificados– como jóvenes, están negociando continuamente las categorías con las que les identifican los “jueces de la normalidad” (Ghannam, 2013). Such a construction, however, is hardly universal; “youth” depends on discursive contextualization in what Aníbal Quijano (1989) calls "historical/structural heterogeneity. " Thus, the apparent homogeneity of youth as an age category conceals other features such as class, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation and religion, which constitute ascriptive markers for identification. In addition, authors such as Santos, Fanon (1963), Bhabha (1991) and Quijano (1989) have noted that the emphasis on certain features in the formation of collective identities can create forms of oppression directed at these groups, in this case defined by age. However, as members of different social groups, those identified – and sometimes self-identified – as “young” are continually negotiating the categories with which they are identified by the "judges of normality" (Ghannam 2013). Food public markets as cultural capital: Girona province

The role of public market halls in European cities has been analysed from several perspectives: as specific places for feeding the city; as public services; as the first public places built specifically for women; as places to control health and taxes on food; as places where the urban-rural relationship can be articulated; as places to control citizens’ behaviour, or as places providing local trade within a structure. There are fewer studies exploring public food markets as cultural and social capital with a view to improving the local and new-endogenous economy, an economy which not only involves the environment, but also the sociality linked to the tradition of food production. Research on public markets in small provincial towns is scarce, particularly the role they play in maintaining the urban-rural relationship by providing a local food supply, and also in constructing the rural landscape. This case study concerns the province of Girona and its nine public markets halls. The aim of the study is to explore their role as a public service within the territory and the agricultural landscape, the communication system, the local gastronomic culture and economic culture, this apparently being more resilient and stable than the economy of scale

Puesta en valor patrimonial de “Villa Teresita” (Mansión Morrosini) como parte de un complejo con espacio público y oficinas públicas - Concordia - Entre Ríos

La Villa Teresita, también conocida como la Mansión Morrosini, está ubicada en calle Urquiza al 430 de la ciudad de Concordia y fue construida a principios del siglo XX. Originalmente, la casona contaba con un área total aproximada de 898 m², retirada de la línea de edificación municipal hacia adentro, quedando prácticamente en el centro del terreno, exenta de los muros laterales. La construcción era de una sola planta, techo de chapa y en la fachada un acceso tripartito: un arco central que descansa en dos columnas y luego dos columnas más abiertas y entradas por los dos laterales. Contaba además con un mirador con un fuste elegante adornado con cuatro copones en cada una de las esquinas, desde el cual se podía observar el río Uruguay. Gran parte de su superficie ha sido demolida en 1998: de sus aproximados 898m2 de superficie cubierta original sólo se conservan 136m2 en la actualidad. De las 15 habitaciones y salones originales, sólo se conservan 4. En lo que respecta a su situación actual, la vivienda “Villa Teresita” se encuentra en avanzado estado de abandono, sólo se realiza un mantenimiento periódico del terreno con el fin de conservar la limpieza. Esta propiedad fue adquirida por Sistema de Caja de Previsión Social para Médicos y Bioquímicos de Entre Ríos en el año 2009 con la intención de construir un edificio en torre procurando la preservación de la casa original, proyecto que nunca pudo concretarse por diversas circunstancias. Los costos que acarreaba la preservación y puesta en valor de la vivienda, junto con otras exigencias del código de edificación, encarecía el costo de la construcción del edificio, disminuyendo considerablemente la rentabilidad de la obra. La información técnica existente actualmente sobre esta vivienda es muy escasa, aunque han podido recabarse diversos reportes, certificaciones, planos de instalaciones, no así los planos originales de obra. El planteo inicial de la puesta en la valor de la casona se basó en sectorizar la planta de arquitectura en dos zonas: espacio cultural y oficinas públicas. Por las características arquitectónicas tan imponentes y representativas de un estilo de construcción, se consideró oportuno poder darle a la casona un uso que esté relacionado con la cultura y las actividades artísticas. Ethnobotanical Research and Compilation of the Medicinal Uses in Spain and the Active Principles of Chiliadenus glutinosus (L.) Fourr. for the Scientific Validation of Its Therapeutic Properties

[EN] The species Chiliadenus glutinosus (L.) Fourr. has a large number of therapeutic uses reported in the traditional Spanish medicine. The growing interest in preserving the ethnopharmacological knowledge related to the botanical diversity existing in Spain and the interest in achieving scientific validation of the therapeutic properties of medicinal species has led to the development of this study. To do it, all the known medicinal uses of Ch. glutinosus in Spain were compiled, then an exhaustive bibliographic research on its chemical composition was carried out, and finally, an in silico validation of the bioactive phytochemicals present in a higher proportion in the essential oil of Ch. glutinosus: camphor, borneol, lucinone, glutinone, quercetin, kutdtriol, and kaempferol; in an attempt to justify the reported traditional uses of the species. It was found that much of the traditional medicinal uses of Ch. glutinosus, along with the biological activity of its phytochemicals, are supported by scientific evidence. The results place this species in a prominent position to initiate possible lines of research to develop new, more effective drugs and improve therapies to treat conditions and diseases that affect the different organic systems of the human being.S

Feminine protagonism in the origins of christianity. The case of perpetua of Carthage.

RESUMEN: La literatura martirial es un género literario de gran interés para el conocimiento de la historia por tratarse de una fuente fundamental para los investigadores, debido a la cantidad de información que esta proporciona sobre el Mundo Antiguo y, más concretamente, sobre el nacimiento y la expansión del cristianismo. En este trabajo vamos a analizar este proceso a través de una obra concreta y de su protagonista, para profundizar en el estudio del papel que desempeñaron las mujeres durante el proceso de expansión y consolidación del cristianismo. La obra fue escrita en el 203 d.C. por Perpetua, una joven aristócrata cristiana, condenada a morir víctima del martirio junto a sus cinco compañeros Sáturo, Revocato, Saturnino, Secúndulo y Felicidad por defender su fe.ABSTRACT: The Martyr literature is a literary genre of great interest because of the amount of information that contributes to history, in addition, it is a fundamental tool for researchers of the Ancient World for the data it provides, specifically about the emergence and expansion of the christianity. This review takes a journey through Queer feminism is for everyone by Gracia Trujillo (Catarata, 2022). The book highlights, from a sociological approach and from situated knowledge, how different transfeminist theories and activism for social transformation come together to raise questions about the norms that position some ways of being, feeling, and doing above others in the social hierarchy. It includes different perspectives, beyond binary norms, and a comprehensive literature review on feminist movements in recent years on issues related to sexuality, identities, gender, desires and bodily experiences, among others. Actualmente en las aulas existe gran variedad de alumnado extranjero, por ello, este Trabajo Fin de Grado trata de adaptar las necesidades de este alumnado al ámbito social y educativo adecuado. Tenemos que tener en cuenta su entorno cercano, así como ofrecer una educación diversa e igualitaria principalmente basada en favorecer la interculturalidad en el aula con el fin de fomentar un sistema educativo que contribuya a que los ciudadanos y ciudadanas del futuro sean personas solidarias, críticas, reflexivas y respetuosas con la realidad presente. Fingolimod phosphate protection against mitochondrial damage in neuronal cells

Background: Major role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of neurodegenerative diseases have been suggested, being mitochondria one of the main sources of ROS. Aim: In the present work, we have studied the antioxidant effect of fingolimod phosphate (FP) on neuronal mitochondrial function and morphology using a model of mitochondrial oxidative damage induced by menadione (Vitk3). Methods: SN4741 neuronal cells were grown (70-80% confluence) and used as control (non-treated cells) or treated cells with Vitk3 15 µM alone or in presence of FP 50 nM during 4 hours. Mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP), cytochrome c oxidase (COX) activity, mitochondrial oxygen consumption rate (OCR), mitochondrial distribution (MTG) and morphology (EM) were analysed. Statistical differences were determined using one-way ANOVA. Results: Vitk3 incubation produces a dramatical decrease in MMP compared to control (43.7 %); this can be almost totally reverted by the co-incubation of Vitk3 in presence of FP (p<0.05). A 20.7 % decrease in COX activity has been found after Vitk3 incubation, again this effect was counteracted when Vitk3 and FP are combined, restoring COX activity to control levels (p<0.05). Vitk3 incubation triggers initially an increase in OCR, decreasing dramatically (61%) after 4 hours. In experiments co-incubating Vitk3 in presence of FP, the OCR decrease found was reduced to only 17% (p<0.05). In experiments with MitoTracker™ Green, we found a change in the network pattern distribution after Vitk3 administration that partially disappears when co-incubated in presence of FP. Almost all the mitochondria treated with Vitk3 show ultrastructural alterations at the electron microscopy level while normal mitochondria can be found when Vitk3 and FP are combined. Conclusion: FP protects against the mitochondrial damage induced by Vitk3, as seen by the results obtained in mitochondrial functional markers, distribution and morphology.Universidad de Málaga.
