On Quadrature Rules Associated with Appell Polynomials
A quadrature rule using Appell polynomials and generalizing both the Euler-MacLaurin quadrature formula and a similar quadrature rule, obtained in Bretti et al [15], which makes use of Euler (instead of Bernoulli) numbers and even (instead of odd) derivatives of the given function at the extrema of the considered interval, is derived. An expression of the remainder term and a numerical example are also enclosed
R-spondin 1/Dickkopf-1/beta-catenin machinery is involved in testicular embryonic angiogenesis
Testicular vasculogenesis is one of the key processes regulating male gonad morphogenesis. The knowledge of the molecular cues underlining this phenomenon is one of today's most challenging issues and could represent a major contribution toward a better understanding of the onset of testicular morphogenetic disorders. R-spondin 1 has been clearly established as a candidate for mammalian ovary determination. Conversely, very little information is available on the expression and role of R-spondin 1 during testicular morphogenesis. This study aims to clarify the distribution pattern of R-spondin 1 and other partners of its machinery during the entire period of testicular morphogenesis and to indicate the role of this system in testicular development. Our whole mount immunofluorescence results clearly demonstrate that R-spondin 1 is always detectable in the testicular coelomic partition, where testicular vasculature is organized, while Dickkopf-1 is never detectable in this area. Moreover, organ culture experiments of embryonic male UGRs demonstrated that Dickkopf-1 acted as an inhibitor of testis vasculature formation. Consistent with this observation, real-time PCR analyses demonstrated that DKK1 is able to slightly but significantly decrease the expression level of the endothelial marker Pecam1. The latter experiments allowed us to observe that DKK1 administration also perturbs the expression level of the Pdgf-b chain, which is consistent with some authors' observations relating this factor with prenatal testicular patterning and angiogenesis. Interestingly, the DKK1 induced inhibition of testicular angiogenesis was rescued by the co-administration of R-spondin 1. In addition, R-spondin 1 alone was sufficient to enhance, in culture, testicular angiogenesis
Advances in the diagnosis of acute aortic syndromes: Role of imaging techniques.
Aortic diseases include a wide range of pathological conditions: aortic aneurysms, pseudoaneurysms, acute aortic syndromes, atherosclerotic and inflammatory conditions, genetic diseases and congenital anomalies. Acute aortic syndromes have acute onset and may be life-threatening. They include aortic dissection, intramural haematoma, penetrating aortic ulcer and traumatic aortic injury. Pain is the common denominator to all acute aortic syndromes. Pain occurs regardless of age, gender and other associated clinical conditions. In this review, we deal with the main findings in the clinical setting and the most recent indications for diagnostic imaging, which are aimed to start an appropriate treatment and improve the short- and long-term prognosis of these patients.

Isolation of Escherichia coli O157 in pigs at slaughter in Northern Italy
A study of VTEC 0157 intestinal carriage was performed in pigs at slaughter, carrying out surveys respectively in the Veneto and the Lombardia regions of Italy within a common research project. The study was conducted for 15 months, starting in June 2002. As a minimum, a sample size of 300 samples was defined for each survey, assuming an expected prevalence of 1%, C.l. 95%, accuracy 5% One gram samples of Intestinal content from the distal gut were tested for E. coli O157 using an isolation method based on immunomagnetic separation. In the survey performed in the Veneto region, all the 397 samples collected from pigs of 132 farms tested negative for VTEC O157, but one E. coli O157 harbouring the eae gene only was isolated. In the survey performed in the Lombardia region, VTEC 0157 was detected in 3 (0.63%, 95% C I 0.12- 1.81) of the 480 sampled p1gs from 3 (2.80%, 95% C.l. 0.58- 7.97) of the 107 farms of origin. Therefore in the study a total of 877 pigs were tested in 15 slaughters of two regions, with a prevalence of 0.34% 95% C.l. 0.07- 0 99) of positive pigs from 1.26% (95% C. I. 0.25- 3.62) of the herds. In one of the positive farms also cattle were reared with pigs, even if housed separately, and in a follow-up investigation VTEC 0157 strains sharing more than 96% homology with the pig strain were found in cattle
Analysis of clasp2 Transcription Pattern in Male Germ Cells during Spermatogenesis: A Comparative Study in Zebrafish (Danio rerio) and Guppy (Poecilia reticulata)
Cytoplasmic linker-associated protein-2 (CLASP2) is a member of the CLIP-associating
proteins (CLASPs) family involved in the structure and function of microtubules and Golgi apparatus. Several studies performed using different mammalian and non-mammalian model organisms
reported that CLASP2 controls microtubule dynamics and the organization of microtubule networks.
In Drosophila and mice, an important role of CLASP2 during the development of germ cell lines has
been uncovered. However, no study has clearly defined its role during fish germ cell differentiation.
In the present study, we used two excellent aquatic animal models among teleost fish: zebrafish
(Danio rerio) and guppy (Poecilia reticulata). Using qPCR, we found that the clasp2 transcript level is
significantly high in the testis of both fish. Then, by in situ hybridization, we localized the clasp2
transcript in the spermatozoa of zebrafish and the spermatozeugmata of guppy. Our data suggest a
potential role for this gene in the last stage of spermiogenesis in fis
Assessment of biventricular function by three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography in adolescents and young adults with human immunodeficiency virus infection. a pilot study.
Background. The purpose of the study was to assess biventricular parameters of wall deformation with three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography (3DSTE) in adolescents and young adults with human immunodeficiency virus infection (HIV) on antiretroviral therapy in order to detect a possible subclinical myocardial dysfunction. Methods. Twenty-one patients aged 12 to 39years with HIV, 21 normal controls of the same age and sex, and 21 patients with idiopathic non-ischemic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM) were studied with 3DSTE. All HIV patients were stable in terms of HIV infection, with no history of heart disease or other chronic systemic disease except HIV infection, and were on highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) with good immunological control. Standard echocardiographic measures of LV-RV function were assessed. 3D LV global longitudinal strain (GLS), circumferential strain, radial strain and LV twist (TW) were calculated. Global area strain (GAS) was calculated by 3DSTE as percentage variation in surface area defined by the longitudinal and circumferential strain vectors. 3D right ventricular (RV) global and free-wall longitudinal strain were obtained. Results. LV GLS and GAS were lower in HIV patients compared to normal controls (p=0.002, and p=0.01, respectively). There were no significant differences in LV ejection fractions between the groups. There was a weak positive correlation between LV GLS and age (r=0.215, p=0.034) and a weak negative correlation between LV GLS and nadir-CD4 T-cells count (r=0.198, p=0.043). DCM patients had more marked and widespread reduction in LV GLS and GAS compared to controls (p<0.001), whereas in HIV patients LV strain impairment (p<0.05) was more localized in basal and apical regions. RV free-wall longitudinal strain was significantly reduced in HIV patients when compared with the control group (p=0.03). No patient had pulmonary systolic pressure higher than 35mmHg. Conclusions. Three-dimensional speckle tracking echocardiography may help to identify HIV patients at high cardiovascular risk allowing early detection of biventricular dysfunction in the presence of normal LV ejection fraction and in the absence of pulmonary hypertension. LV strain impairment in HIV patients is less prominent and widespread compared to DCM patients

Acne radar: A new intuitive graphic visualization of quality of life in acne patients
Background: There are many instruments available in literature to evaluate the influence of acne on Qualify of Life (QoL), but many of these questionnaires rarely are performed in daily clinical practice. Many of these instruments require a long time for the compilation, and often they are not self completed. There are no simple and intuitive instrument that can be completed by patients alone, with a graphical representation of the results. Objective: To develop a new, rapid and intuitive graphic instrument to a questionnaire allowing both a quick assessment of the impact of acne on patients and, at the same time, increase patient's compliance and self-esteem. Methods: In our study 50 patients were recruited and questionnaire was administered following the main items evaluated in the validated index of QoL from previous studies for acne patients. We have applied an intuitive graph representation, the "Radar Graph", and other statistical methods like the Decisional Map and the Principal Component Analysis, to this questionnaire allowing a quick assessment of the impact of acne on patients. Results: The questionnaire evaluated have 10 items regarding 3 different area: the objective symptoms such as negative perception of their image (imperfection), sting and insomnia; the subjective symptoms such as depression, perception of illness, lack of serenity and shame; and the relational difficulties such as social relationships, working relationships, and intimate relations. The answers are given on a 10-point visual analogue scale. Conclusion: Our survey can be a new, rapid and intuitive graphic instrument to use in clinical practice
remitting relapsing carbamazepine overdosage mimicking vertebrobasilar transient ischemic attacks
The objective of this article is to describe an atypical, remitting-relapsing presentation of carbamazepine toxicity due to its interaction with nebivolol. The method we use is a case report of an elderly epileptic patient in treatment with antiepileptic drugs (AEDs) and antihypertensive drugs, manifesting transient neurological symptoms in association with high blood pressure values. The case report is of a 72-year-old male by forty years of age had tonicclonic seizures related to the presence of a cerebral arteriovenous malformation. Seizures had been successfully controlled for many years by the same dosage of carbamazepine and lamotrigine, and recently total serum carbamazepine levels resulted within the "therapeutic range." He had also a history of controlled essential hypertension, but lately he manifested a scarce control of his blood pressure values. Few days after a modification of his antihypertensive therapy, the patient had two transient episodes of dysarthria, ataxia, and dizziness. At the emergency department, his blood pressure values were 190/110 mmHg, ECG and routine blood tests were normal, and a brain CT did not show acute lesions; about two hours later, his neurological examination was normal. Morning fasting carbamazepine serum levels were "normal" too; therefore, his symptoms were initially interpreted as vertebrobasilar transient ischemic attacks. However, the recurrence of similar episodes despite the normalization of his blood pressure suggested a carbamazepine intoxication. Indeed, its dosage resulted too high just in occasion of one of his attacks. A moderate reduction of carbamazepine was followed by cessation of toxicity. This case reminds us to be aware of adverse consequences of other drugs in patients assuming carbamazepine: in this case, its toxicity was consequential to a likely metabolic interaction with nebivolol
