HI emission from the red giant Y CVn with the VLA and FAST

Imaging studies with the VLA have revealed HI emission associated with the extended circumstellar shells of red giants. We analyse the spectral map obtained on Y CVn, a J-type carbon star on the AGB. The HI line profiles can be interpreted with a model of a detached shell resulting from the interaction of a stellar outflow with the local interstellar medium. We reproduce the spectral map by introducing a distortion along a direction corresponding to the star's motion in space. We then use this fitting to simulate observations expected from the FAST radiotelescope, and discuss its potential for improving ourdescription of the outer regions of circumstellar shells.Comment: accepted for publication in RA

Controlling the dynamics of a coupled atom-cavity system by pure dephasing : basics and potential applications in nanophotonics

The influence of pure dephasing on the dynamics of the coupling between a two-level atom and a cavity mode is systematically addressed. We have derived an effective atom-cavity coupling rate that is shown to be a key parameter in the physics of the problem, allowing to generalize the known expression for the Purcell factor to the case of broad emitters, and to define strategies to optimize the performances of broad emitters-based single photon sources. Moreover, pure dephasing is shown to be able to restore lasing in presence of detuning, a further demonstration that decoherence can be seen as a fundamental resource in solid-state cavity quantum electrodynamics, offering appealing perspectives in the context of advanced nano-photonic devices.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure

Cosmological perturbations of a perfect fluid and noncommutative variables

We describe the linear cosmological perturbations of a perfect fluid at the level of an action, providing thus an alternative to the standard approach based only on the equations of motion. This action is suited not only to perfect fluids with a barotropic equation of state, but also to those for which the pressure depends on two thermodynamical variables. By quantizing the system we find that (1) some perturbation fields exhibit a noncommutativity quite analogous to the one observed for a charged particle moving in a strong magnetic field, (2) local curvature and pressure perturbations cannot be measured simultaneously, (3) ghosts appear if the null energy condition is violated.Comment: 4 pages, uses RevTeX. Final State Interaction Phases in B→Kπ B \to K \pi Decay Amplitudes

A simple Regge pole model for $K\pi$ scattering explains the large $e^{i \delta}$ between isospin amplitudes which is observed at the D meson mass ($\delta \approx \pi/2$). It predicts $\delta \approx 14^{\circ}- 20^{\circ}$ at the B mass. Implications for ($B \to K \pi$) decays and extensions of the model to other two-body decay channels are briefly discussed.Comment: 8pages,late

La production laitière des dromadaires Dankali (Ethiopie)

Un suivi sur trois ans et demi de 5 femelles de race Dankali entretenues sur pâturages naturels a permis d'observer 6 lactations complètes, 6 intervall es entre mises bas, 11 naissances et la croissance de 5 chamelons; 99 contrôles laitiers ont été pratiqués. La production moyenne de lait est de 1 123 litres sur 12,25 mois. Le coefficient de persistance est élevé : de 97,1 p.100 et de 74,1 p. 100 pour des périodes de 100 jours. Le pic de lactation est atteint à 56,5 jours avec un volume de 4,4 litres. Les intervalles entre mises bas sont très variables : de 13 à 32 mois. L'intervall e mise bas-saillie fécondante peut être bref et la lactation peut se poursuivr e jusqu'à un stade avancé de la gestation. Les productions observées sont comparées à des relevés ponctuels de lactation rapportés dans la même région, sur le même type d'animaux mais dans des conditions d'entretien différente

Electric field sensing with a scanning fiber-coupled quantum dot

We demonstrate the application of a fiber-coupled quantum-dot-in-a-tip as a probe for scanning electric field microscopy. We map the out-of-plane component of the electric field induced by a pair of electrodes by measurement of the quantum-confined Stark effect induced on a quantum dot spectral line. Our results are in agreement with finite element simulations of the experiment. Furthermore, we present results from analytic calculations and simulations which are relevant to any electric field sensor embedded in a dielectric tip. In particular, we highlight the impact of the tip geometry on both the resolution and sensitivity.Comment: 10 pages, 4 figure

Signature Characters for A_2 and B_2

The signatures of the inner product matrices on a Lie algebra's highest weight representation are encoded in the representation's signature character. We show that the signature characters of a finite-dimensional Lie algebra's highest weight representations obey simple difference equations that have a unique solution once appropriate boundary conditions are imposed. We use these results to derive the signature characters of all $A_2$ and $B_2$ highest weight representations. Our results extend, and explain, signature patterns analogous to those observed by Friedan, Qiu and Shenker in the Virasoro algebra's representation theory.Comment: 22 p
