The effect of speaking rate on serial order sound-level errors in non-brain damaged participants and persons with aphasia
While many speech errors can be generated at either a linguistic or motoric level of production, phonetically well formed sound-level serial order errors are generally assumed to result from disruption of phonologic encoding (PE) processes. An influential model of PE (Dell, 1986; Dell, Burger & Svec, 1997) predicts that speaking rate should affect the relative proportion of these serial order sound errors (anticipations, perseverations, exchanges). These predictions have been extended to, and have special relevance for persons with aphasia (PWA) because of the increased frequency with which speech errors occur and because their localization within the functional linguistic architecture may help in treatment management. Supporting evidence regarding the effect of speaking rate on phonological encoding has been provided by studies using young normal language (NL) speakers and computer simulations. Limited data exist at present for older NL users and no group data exist for PWA. The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of speech rate on the ratio of phonological sequencing errors (anticipation/exchange (AE), anticipation/perseveration) (AP)) and other error types (vocal reaction time and distortion) in non-brain-damaged individuals and in persons with aphasia who were without concomitant motor speech disorders. Sixteen NL users and 16 PWA performed a phonologically challenging (tongue twister) speech production task at their typical and two faster speaking rates. A significant effect of rate was obtained for the AP ratio but not for the other comparisons. Contrary to the predictions of the model, the AP ratio increased with faster speaking rates. There was also a significant effect of rate and group for the VRT measure. The results for the serial order error ratios did not provide support for the model derived predictions regarding the direction of change for error type proportions. However, the significant effect of rate for the AP ratio provided support that changes in speaking rate did affect phonological encoding. Additionally, the results suggest that the relationships among slow post-selection inhibition and normal residual activation functions postulated to create an increase in perseverations relative to anticipation serial order errors, needs to be reconsidered within the Dell, et al. (1997) model
Dynamics of Transformation from Segregation to Mixed Wealth Cities
We model the dynamics of the Schelling model for agents described simply by a
continuously distributed variable - wealth. Agents move to neighborhoods where
their wealth is not lesser than that of some proportion of their neighbors, the
threshold level. As in the case of the classic Schelling model where
segregation obtains between two races, we find here that wealth-based
segregation occurs and persists. However, introducing uncertainty into the
decision to move - that is, with some probability, if agents are allowed to
move even though the threshold level condition is contravened - we find that
even for small proportions of such disallowed moves, the dynamics no longer
yield segregation but instead sharply transition into a persistent mixed wealth
distribution. We investigate the nature of this sharp transformation between
segregated and mixed states, and find that it is because of a non-linear
relationship between allowed moves and disallowed moves. For small increases in
disallowed moves, there is a rapid corresponding increase in allowed moves, but
this tapers off as the fraction of disallowed moves increase further and
finally settles at a stable value, remaining invariant to any further increase
in disallowed moves. It is the overall effect of the dynamics in the initial
region (with small numbers of disallowed moves) that shifts the system away
from a state of segregation rapidly to a mixed wealth state.
The contravention of the tolerance condition could be interpreted as public
policy interventions like minimal levels of social housing or housing benefit
transfers to poorer households. Our finding therefore suggests that it might
require only very limited levels of such public intervention - just sufficient
to enable a small fraction of disallowed moves, because the dynamics generated
by such moves could spur the transformation from a segregated to mixed

Territorial Developments Based on Graffiti: a Statistical Mechanics Approach
We study the well-known sociological phenomenon of gang aggregation and
territory formation through an interacting agent system defined on a lattice.
We introduce a two-gang Hamiltonian model where agents have red or blue
affiliation but are otherwise indistinguishable. In this model, all
interactions are indirect and occur only via graffiti markings, on-site as well
as on nearest neighbor locations. We also allow for gang proliferation and
graffiti suppression. Within the context of this model, we show that gang
clustering and territory formation may arise under specific parameter choices
and that a phase transition may occur between well-mixed, possibly dilute
configurations and well separated, clustered ones. Using methods from
statistical mechanics, we study the phase transition between these two
qualitatively different scenarios. In the mean-field rendition of this model,
we identify parameter regimes where the transition is first or second order. In
all cases, we have found that the transitions are a consequence solely of the
gang to graffiti couplings, implying that direct gang to gang interactions are
not strictly necessary for gang territory formation; in particular, graffiti
may be the sole driving force behind gang clustering. We further discuss

A comparison of elicitation procedures for connected language analyses in person with aphasia:Concurrent validation of the Story Retell Procedure
Among the elicited and observed procedures used to describe, classify, diagnose, measure change, quantify severity, and plan intervention for persons with aphasia, the measurement of connected spoken language has become a stable and valued procedure for many of these purposes. Although recognized, the most valid, reliable, and efficient methods for sampling connected language has received relatively little experimental attention from clinical and experimental aphasiologists. The recently developed Story Retell Procedure (SRP) (Doyle, et al, 2000) has the unique measurement advantage of predetermined targets for the retold stories; however, it relies on the comprehension as well as the production of the individual for the samples from which linguistic measurements are performed. Its concurrent validation has not been established
Indirect effects of urbanization: consequences of increased aggression in an urban male songbird for mates and offspring
Behavioral traits are often the first response to changing environmental conditions, including human induced rapid environmental change. For example, animals living in urban areas are often more aggressive than rural animals. This is especially evident in songbirds; males of several species display elevated aggression in urban habitats. Increased male aggression has been associated with reduced parental care, but the consequences of this trade-off for males, social partners, and offspring in the context of urbanization remains unclear. We explored the effects of increased urban male aggression on the life history traits, parental care, and offspring outcomes of song sparrows (Melospiza melodia). We predicted that urban males would reduce paternal investment and result in urban females providing greater nestling care or reduced fledging success in urban habitats compared to rural. Contrary to our prediction, aggressive urban males did not decrease care but visited the nest more often compared to rural males. Additionally, urban birds had higher nest and fledging success compared to rural, though this was largely due to higher nest predation in rural habitats. Our study is among the first to evaluate trade-offs associated with elevated aggression expressed by urban animals and adds to a growing body of evidence that urban habitats provide benefits to some species
Common Variants at 9p21 and 8q22 Are Associated with Increased Susceptibility to Optic Nerve Degeneration in Glaucoma
Optic nerve degeneration caused by glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness worldwide. Patients affected by the normal-pressure form of glaucoma are more likely to harbor risk alleles for glaucoma-related optic nerve disease. We have performed a meta-analysis of two independent genome-wide association studies for primary open angle glaucoma (POAG) followed by a normal-pressure glaucoma (NPG, defined by intraocular pressure (IOP) less than 22 mmHg) subgroup analysis. The single-nucleotide polymorphisms that showed the most significant associations were tested for association with a second form of glaucoma, exfoliation-syndrome glaucoma. The overall meta-analysis of the GLAUGEN and NEIGHBOR dataset results (3,146 cases and 3,487 controls) identified significant associations between two loci and POAG: the CDKN2BAS region on 9p21 (rs2157719 [G], OR = 0.69 [95%CI 0.63–0.75], p = 1.86×10−18), and the SIX1/SIX6 region on chromosome 14q23 (rs10483727 [A], OR = 1.32 [95%CI 1.21–1.43], p = 3.87×10−11). In sub-group analysis two loci were significantly associated with NPG: 9p21 containing the CDKN2BAS gene (rs2157719 [G], OR = 0.58 [95% CI 0.50–0.67], p = 1.17×10−12) and a probable regulatory region on 8q22 (rs284489 [G], OR = 0.62 [95% CI 0.53–0.72], p = 8.88×10−10). Both NPG loci were also nominally associated with a second type of glaucoma, exfoliation syndrome glaucoma (rs2157719 [G], OR = 0.59 [95% CI 0.41–0.87], p = 0.004 and rs284489 [G], OR = 0.76 [95% CI 0.54–1.06], p = 0.021), suggesting that these loci might contribute more generally to optic nerve degeneration in glaucoma. Because both loci influence transforming growth factor beta (TGF-beta) signaling, we performed a genomic pathway analysis that showed an association between the TGF-beta pathway and NPG (permuted p = 0.009). These results suggest that neuro-protective therapies targeting TGF-beta signaling could be effective for multiple forms of glaucoma

This paper provides an inferentialist account of model-based understanding by combining a counterfactual account of explanation and an inferentialist account of representation with a view of modeling as extended cognition. This account makes it understandable how the manipulation of surrogate systems like models can provide genuinely new empirical understanding about the world. Similarly, the account pro- vides an answer to the question how models, that always incorporate assumptions that are literally untrue of the model target, can still provide factive explanations. Finally, the paper shows how the contrastive counterfactual theory of explanation can provide tools for assessing the explanatory power of models.Peer reviewe
