Chandra and RXTE studies of the X-ray/gamma-ray millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232
We report on high-resolution spatial and timing observations of the
millisecond pulsar PSR J0218+4232 performed with the Chandra X-ray Observatory
(CXO) and the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer (RXTE). With these observations we
were able to study a) the possible spatial extent at X-ray energies of the DC
source coincident with PSR J0218+4232 in detail (CXO), b) the relative phasing
between the X-ray, radio and gamma-ray profiles (CXO and RXTE) and c) the
spectral properties at energies beyond 10 keV (RXTE). We found no indications
for extended emission at X-ray energies down to ~ 1 arcsec scales and confirmed
the presence of a point-like DC-component. The 2 non-thermal pulses in the
X-ray profile are found to be aligned with 2 of the 3 pulses visible at
radio-frequencies and more importantly with the two gamma-ray pulses seen in
the EGRET 100-1000 MeV pulse profile. The latter reduces now the random
occurrence probability for the detected gamma-ray signal to ~ 1.E-6, which
corresponds to a 4.9 sigma detection significance.Comment: 8 pages,7 figures, accepted for publication in Adv Sp Res:

a Jädraås.
Histopathology of the renal and splenic haemopoietic tissues of coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch experimentally infected with Renibacterium salmoninarum
We report the histopathological changes occurring in the renal and splenic haemopoietic tissues of coho salmon Oncorhynchus kisutch experimentally infected with renibacterium salmoninarum. In both tissues we were able by light microscopy to distinguish 3 different grades in the progression of the infection. The grades of infection were characterized according to the location of the bacteria and the tissue injuries. Ultrastructural observation revealed sinusoidal cells, macrophages, reticular and barrier cells to be infected by the pathogen, and necrosis of the tissue to be general in advanced stages of the infection. Despite destruction of the haemopoietic tissue, plasmacytopoietic foci were frequently observed in both organs. Other major changes were the appearance of epithelioid cells and an increase in the number of barrier cells. These 2 cell types might be involved in the local defence response to the pathogen, but they may also act as a reservoir and proliferation locus for R. salmoninarum
Wavelet-Petrov-Galerkin Method for the Numerical Solution of the KdV Equation
The development of numerical techniques for obtaining approximate solutions of partial differential equations has very much increased in the last decades. Among these techniques are the finite element methods and finite difference. Recently, wavelet methods are applied to the numerical solution of partial differential equations, pioneer works in this direction are those of Beylkin, Dahmen, Jaffard and Glowinski, among others. In this paper, we employ the Wavelet-Petrov-Galerkin method to obtain the numerical solution of the equation Korterweg-de Vries (KdV).The development of numerical techniques for obtaining approximate solutions of partial differential equations has very much increased in the last decades. Insights into the room temperature magnetism of ZnO/Co3O4 mixtures
The origin of room temperature (RT) ferromagneticlike behavior in ZnO-based
diluted magnetic semiconductors is still an unclear topic. The present work
concentrates on the appearance of RT magnetic moments in just mixed ZnO/Co3O4
mixtures without thermal treatment. In this study, it is shown that the
magnetism seems to be related to surface reduction of the Co3O4 nanoparticles,
in which, an antiferromagnetic Co3O4 nanoparticle (core) is surrounded by a
CoO-like shell. This singular superficial magnetism has also been found in
other mixtures with semiconductors such as TiO2 and insulators such as Al2O3
