Moina eugeniae is one of the most abundant zooplankton species found in ponds and lakes in Buenos Aires Province. Its importance is due to the common use of cladocerans as food fish. The aim of the present study was to investigate the reproductive structures through histological techniques. Samples were taken with a plankton net (150 μm) from the Calderón lake (Buenos Aires) during Spring 2006. The specimens were anesthetized with CO2 “in situ” and fixed with formaldehyde 4%. Parthenogenetic females in different reproductive stages were selected to perform with them routine histological techniques. No males were identified during our study. The ovaries are pair, secular and disposed dorsally in the body. The oocytes are polyedric with three different stages of maturation: previtellogenic (dense nuclear cromatine), vitellogenic (abundant yolk in cytoplasm and large granules of cromatine in the nucleous) and mature (abundant lipidic drops in cytoplasm). Many of the morphological features observed are similar to those of Daphnia genus. Further investigation is needed to elucidate the reproductive cycle of this species.Instituto de Limnología "Raúl A. Vortex Polarity Switching in Magnets with Surface Anisotropy

    Get PDF
Vortex core reversal in magnetic particle is essentially influenced by a surface anisotropy. Under the action of a perpendicular static magnetic field the vortex core undergoes a shape deformationof pillow- or barrel-shaped type, depending on the type of the surface anisotropy. This deformation plays a key point in the switching mechanism: We predict that the vortex polarity switching is accompanied (i) by a linear singularity in case of Heisenberg magnet with bulk anisotropy only and (ii) by a point singularities in case of surface anisotropy or exchange anisotropy. We study in details the switching process using spin-lattice simulations and propose a simple analytical description using a wired core model, which provides an adequate description of the Bloch point statics, its dynamics and the Bloch point mediated switching process. Our analytical predictions are confirmed by spin-lattice simulations for Heisenberg magnet and micromagnetic simulations for nanomagnet with account of a dipolar interaction.Comment: 17 pages, 15 figure

Dielectric breakdown model for conductor-loaded and insulator-loaded composite materials

    Get PDF
In the present work we generalize the dielectric breakdown model to describe dielectric breakdown patterns in both conductor-loaded and insulator-loaded composites. The present model is an extension of a previous one [F. Peruani et al., Phys. Rev. E 67, 066121 (2003)] presented by the authors to describe dielectric breakdown patterns in conductor-loaded composites. Particles are distributed at random in a matrix with a variable concentration p. The generalized model assigns different probabilities P(i,k!i8,k8) to breakdown channel formation according to particle characteristics. Dielectric breakdown patterns are characterized by their fractal dimension D and the parameters of the Weibull distribution. Studies are carried out as a function of the fraction of inhomogeneities, p.Instituto de Investigaciones Fisicoquímicas Teóricas y AplicadasUniversidad de Buenos Aire

Profile and professional expectations of medical students from 11 Latin American countries: the Red-LIRHUS project

    Get PDF
Background Latin America is undergoing a human resource crisis in health care in terms of labor shortage, misdistribution and poor orientation to primary care. Workforce data are needed to inform the planning of long-term strategies to address this problem. This study aimed to evaluate the academic and motivational profile, as well as the professional expectations, of Latin American medical students. Results We conducted an observational, cross-sectional, multi-country study evaluating medical students from 11 Spanish-speaking countries in 2011–2012. Motivations to study medicine, migration intentions, intent to enter postgraduate programs, and perceptions regarding primary care were evaluated via a self-administered questionnaire. Outcomes were measured with pilot-tested questions and previously validated scales. A total of 11,072 valid surveys from 63 medical schools were gathered and analyzed. Conclusions This study describes the profile and expectations of the future workforce being trained in Latin America. The obtained information will be useful for governments and universities in planning strategies to improve their current state of affairs regarding human resources for health care professions

Aprendizaje integrado, del aula al laboratorio. trabajo práctico sobre la síntesis de nanomateriales

    Get PDF

Combined parameter and model reduction of cardiovascular problems by means of active subspaces and POD-Galerkin methods

    Get PDF
In this chapter we introduce a combined parameter and model reduction methodology and present its application to the efficient numerical estimation of a pressure drop in a set of deformed carotids. The aim is to simulate a wide range of possible occlusions after the bifurcation of the carotid. A parametric description of the admissible deformations, based on radial basis functions interpolation, is introduced. Since the parameter space may be very large, the first step in the combined reduction technique is to look for active subspaces in order to reduce the parameter space dimension. Then, we rely on model order reduction methods over the lower dimensional parameter subspace, based on a POD-Galerkin approach, to further reduce the required computational effort and enhance computational efficiency

    Quantum walks: a comprehensive review

Quantum walks, the quantum mechanical counterpart of classical random walks, is an advanced tool for building quantum algorithms that has been recently shown to constitute a universal model of quantum computation. Quantum walks is now a solid field of research of quantum computation full of exciting open problems for physicists, computer scientists, mathematicians and engineers. In this paper we review theoretical advances on the foundations of both discrete- and continuous-time quantum walks, together with the role that randomness plays in quantum walks, the connections between the mathematical models of coined discrete quantum walks and continuous quantum walks, the quantumness of quantum walks, a summary of papers published on discrete quantum walks and entanglement as well as a succinct review of experimental proposals and realizations of discrete-time quantum walks. Furthermore, we have reviewed several algorithms based on both discrete- and continuous-time quantum walks as well as a most important result: the computational universality of both continuous- and discrete- time quantum walks.Comment: Paper accepted for publication in Quantum Information Processing Journa
