Concept Identification as a Function of three Semantic Dimensions
It is the purpose of the present study to determine the differential effects of the three primary semantic dimensions on the ability of Ss to solve a concept identification problem. It was hypothesized that the performance level, as measured by a criterion of learning ten successive responses containing no more than one error, time to completion, and the total number of errors, will be higher for Ss working on the evaluative dimension than for Ss working on the potency or activity dimensions. Two additional hypotheses were formulated in an attempt to answer the following questions: 1) Is the ability to identify concepts a function of verbal or mathematical ability?; and 2) Will those \u27Who display a high level of verbal or mathematical ability reach the criterion of learning more rapidly
'To live and die [for] Dixie': Irish civilians and the Confederate States of America
Around 20,000 Irishmen served in the Confederate army in the Civil War. As a result, they left behind, in various Southern towns and cities, large numbers of friends, family, and community leaders. As with native-born Confederates, Irish civilian support was crucial to Irish participation in the Confederate military effort. Also, Irish civilians served in various supporting roles: in factories and hospitals, on railroads and diplomatic missions, and as boosters for the cause. They also, however, suffered in bombardments, sieges, and the blockade. Usually poorer than their native neighbours, they could not afford to become 'refugees' and move away from the centres of conflict. This essay, based on research from manuscript collections, contemporary newspapers, British Consular records, and Federal military records, will examine the role of Irish civilians in the Confederacy, and assess the role this activity had on their integration into Southern communities. It will also look at Irish civilians in the defeat of the Confederacy, particularly when they came under Union occupation. Initial research shows that Irish civilians were not as upset as other whites in the South about Union victory. They welcomed a return to normalcy, and often 'collaborated' with Union authorities. Also, Irish desertion rates in the Confederate army were particularly high, and I will attempt to gauge whether Irish civilians played a role in this. All of the research in this paper will thus be put in the context of the Drew Gilpin Faust/Gary Gallagher debate on the influence of the Confederate homefront on military performance. The angiotensin type 1 receptor antagonist, eprosartan, attenuates the progression of renal disease in spontaneously hypertensive stroke-prone rats with accelerated hypertension
ABSTRACT The effects of the angiotensin type 1 (AT 1 ) receptor antagonist, eprosartan, were studied in a model of severe, chronic hypertension. Treatment of male spontaneously hypertensive stroke prone rats (SHR-SP) fed a high-fat, high-salt diet with eprosartan (60 mg/kg/day i.p.) for 12 weeks resulted in a lowering of blood pressure (250 Ϯ 9 versus 284 Ϯ 8 mm Hg), renal expression of transforming growth factor- mRNA (1.5 Ϯ 0.2 versus 5.4 Ϯ 1.4) and the matrix components: plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (5.2 Ϯ 1.4 versus 31.4 Ϯ 10.7), fibronectin (2.2 Ϯ 0.6 versus 8.2 Ϯ 2.2), collagen I-␣1 (5.6 Ϯ 2.0 versus 23.8 Ϯ 7.3), and collagen III (2.7 Ϯ 0.9 versus 7.6 Ϯ 2.1). Data were corrected for rpL32 mRNA expression and expressed relative to Wistar Kyoto (WKY) rats [ϭ1.0]. Expression of fibronectin protein was also lowered by eprosartan (0.8 Ϯ 0.1 versus 1.9 Ϯ 0.5), relative to WKY rats. Eprosartan provided significant renoprotection to SHR-SP rats as measured by decreased proteinuria (22 Ϯ 2 versus 127 Ϯ 13 mg/day) and histological evidence of active renal damage (5 Ϯ 2 versus 195 Ϯ 6) and renal fibrosis (5.9 Ϯ 0.7 versus 16.4 Ϯ 1.9) in vehicle-versus eprosartantreated rats, respectively. Our results demonstrated that AT 1 receptor blockade with eprosartan can reduce blood pressure and preserve renal structure and function in this model of severe, chronic hypertension. These effects were accompanied by a decreased renal expression of transforming growth factor-1, plasminogen activator inhibitor-1, and several other extracellular matrix proteins compared with vehicle-treated SHR-SP. The renin-angiotensin system is a major regulator of blood pressure within the body, through the maintenance of vascular tone and sodium homeostasis. The renin-angiotensin system has, however, also been implicated in a number of diseases, characterized by remodeling and fibrosis, including forms of progressive renal disease. The generation of angiotensin II can lead to organ damage through both mitogenic activity and profibrotic remodeling. Network analysis of human glaucomatous optic nerve head astrocytes
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Astrocyte activation is a characteristic response to injury in the central nervous system, and can be either neurotoxic or neuroprotective, while the regulation of both roles remains elusive.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To decipher the regulatory elements controlling astrocyte-mediated neurotoxicity in glaucoma, we conducted a systems-level functional analysis of gene expression, proteomic and genetic data associated with reactive optic nerve head astrocytes (ONHAs).</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Our reconstruction of the molecular interactions affected by glaucoma revealed multi-domain biological networks controlling activation of ONHAs at the level of intercellular stimuli, intracellular signaling and core effectors. The analysis revealed that synergistic action of the transcription factors AP-1, vitamin D receptor and Nuclear Factor-kappaB in cross-activation of multiple pathways, including inflammatory cytokines, complement, clusterin, ephrins, and multiple metabolic pathways. We found that the products of over two thirds of genes linked to glaucoma by genetic analysis can be functionally interconnected into one epistatic network via experimentally-validated interactions. Finally, we built and analyzed an integrative disease pathology network from a combined set of genes revealed in genetic studies, genes differentially expressed in glaucoma and closely connected genes/proteins in the interactome.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results suggest several key biological network modules that are involved in regulating neurotoxicity of reactive astrocytes in glaucoma, and comprise potential targets for cell-based therapy.</p

Since then, significant progress has been made across all aspects of the EBP roadmap, as outlined in the 2018 article describing the project’s goals, strategies, and challenges (1). The launch phase has ended and the clock has started on reaching the EBP’s major milestones. This Special Feature explores the many facets of the EBP, including a review of progress, a description of major scientific goals, exemplar projects, ethical legal and social issues, and applications of biodiversity genomics. In this Introduction, we summarize the current status of the EBP, held virtually October 5 to 9, 2020, including recent updates through February 2021. References to the nine Perspective articles included in this Special Feature are cited to guide the reader toward deeper understanding of the goals and challenges facing the EBP
Finishing the euchromatic sequence of the human genome
The sequence of the human genome encodes the genetic instructions for human physiology, as well as rich information about human evolution. In 2001, the International Human Genome Sequencing Consortium reported a draft sequence of the euchromatic portion of the human genome. Since then, the international collaboration has worked to convert this draft into a genome sequence with high accuracy and nearly complete coverage. Here, we report the result of this finishing process. The current genome sequence (Build 35) contains 2.85 billion nucleotides interrupted by only 341 gaps. It covers ∼99% of the euchromatic genome and is accurate to an error rate of ∼1 event per 100,000 bases. Many of the remaining euchromatic gaps are associated with segmental duplications and will require focused work with new methods. The near-complete sequence, the first for a vertebrate, greatly improves the precision of biological analyses of the human genome including studies of gene number, birth and death. Notably, the human enome seems to encode only 20,000-25,000 protein-coding genes. The genome sequence reported here should serve as a firm foundation for biomedical research in the decades ahead
Overconfident Investors, Predictable Returns, and Excessive Trading
The last several decades have witnessed a shift away from a fully rational paradigm of financial markets toward one in which investor behavior is influenced by psychological biases. Two principal factors have contributed to this evolution: a body of evidence showing how psychological bias affects the behavior of economic actors; and an accumulation of evidence that is hard to reconcile with fully rational models of security market trading volumes and returns. In particular, asset markets exhibit trading volumes that are high, with individuals and asset managers trading aggressively, even when such trading results in high risk and low net returns. Moreover, asset prices display patterns of predictability that are difficult to reconcile with rational-expectations–based theories of price formation.
