Fieldtrip manual for Plant Biodiversity

Plant Biodiversity is a subject taught during the second year of the Undergraduate Degree in Biology at the University of Alicante. The main principles about the diversity and morphology of the plants are mostly given during the theoretical classes. This fieldtrip practical manual, together with the laboratory sessions, gives the students an opportunity to see our most common wild plant species. Their direct observations allow them to identify properly the main botanical families, genera and species of our wild flora. This Fieldtrip manual for Plant Biodiversity has been written to enhance the understanding of plant diversity and to identify the different ecological conditions for plant species. Students have to understand that “plants do not grow everywhere”. Most of our natural flora, and specially the endemic one, requires specific environmental conditions to grow. So, the objectives of these fieldtrips are to identify wild flora and to recognise the ecological habitats where many of the identified plant species live

Hybrids of Helianthemum viscarium (Cistaceae)

Helianthemum viscarium se distribuye por el norte de África y sudeste de la Península Ibérica, territorios en los que convive y se cruza con otros táxones de la sección Helianthemum. En la presente contribución se revisa la nomenclatura y taxonomía de los híbridos ibéricos de dicha especie. Por un lado, se propone aplicar el nombre H. x guiraoi Willk. a los ejemplares resultantes del cruzamiento entre H. almeriense subsp. scopulorum y H. viscarium, en un sentido diferente al que fue descrito; este híbrido se lectotipifica y se da a conocer como novedad para Alicante. Además, se discute un curioso enredo nomenclatural que afecta a los híbridos almerienses denominados en ocasiones H. x alicantinum, para los que aquí se propone el nuevo nombre H. x guiraoi nothosubsp. charidemi nom. nov. Por otro lado, se describen dos nuevas notoespecies, H. x lucentinum nothosp. nov., que incluye a los mestos resultantes del cruzamiento entre H. violaceum y H. viscarium, y H. x rigualii nothosp. nov., para los híbridos entre H. marminorense y H. viscarium.Helianthemum viscarium occurs in northern Africa and southeastern Iberian Peninsula, an area in which it grows together and hybridizes with other representatives of sect. Helianthemum. In the present contribution the nomenclature and taxonomy of the Iberian hybrids of that species is revised. On the one hand, H. x guiraoi Willk. is applied to plants coming from the crossing between H. almeriense subsp. scopulorum and H. viscarium, in a sense that differs from the original description; this hybrid is lectotypified and is also recorded for the first time in Alicante province. Furthermore, a peculiar nomenclatural affair is discussed that concerns the Almeriensian hybrids sometimes called H. x alicantinum, for which the new name H. x guiraoi nothosubsp. charidemi nom. nov. is proposed. On the other hand, two new nothospecies are described: H. x lucentinum nothosp. nov. for hybrids between H. viscarium and H. violaceum, and H. x rigualii nothosp. nov., for those from H. marminorense and H. viscarium
