Form factors for B−−>πlÎœB-->\pi l\nu decay in a model constrained by chiral symmetry and quark model

    Get PDF
The form factors for the B−−>πB-->\pi transition are evaluated in the entire momentum transfer range by using the constraints obtained in the framework combining the heavy quark expansion and chiral symmetry for light quarks and the quark model. In particular, we calculate the valence quark contributions and show that it together with the equal time commutator contribution simulate a B-meson pole q^2-dependence of form factors in addition to the usual vector meson B^{*}-pole diagram for B−−>πlÎœB --> \pi l\nu in the above framework. We discuss the predictions in our model, which provide an estimate of |V_{ub}|^2.Comment: 7 pages, Revtex, 5 figure, fig 3 is replaced and some text is adde

Can Doubly Strange Dibaryon Resonances be Discovered at RHIC?

The baryon-baryon continuum invariant mass spectrum generated from relativistic nucleus + nucleus collision data may reveal the existence of doubly-strange dibaryons not stable against strong decay if they lie within a few MeV of threshold. Furthermore, since the dominant component of these states is a superposition of two color-octet clusters which can be produced intermediately in a color-deconfined quark-gluon plasma (QGP), an enhanced production of dibaryon resonances could be a signal of QGP formation. A total of eight, doubly-strange dibaryon states are considered for experimental search using the STAR detector (Solenoidal Tracker at RHIC) at the new Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). These states may decay to Lambda-Lambda and/or proton-Cascade-minus, depending on the resonance energy. STAR's large acceptance, precision tracking and vertex reconstruction capabilities, and large data volume capacity, make it an ideal instrument to use for such a search. Detector performance and analysis sensitivity are studied as a function of resonance production rate and width for one particular dibaryon which can directly strong decay to proton-Cascade-minus but not Lambda-Lambda. Results indicate that such resonances may be discovered using STAR if the resonance production rates are comparable to coalescence model predictions for dibaryon bound states.Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures, revised versio

In a study of proton-proton interactions at √s=26GeV, inclusive distributions of single pions and systems of pions of various charge combinations are presented, as well as the production ratio obtained in association with various trigger particles. The results are compared to current phenomenological models in an attempt to understand multiparticle productions in hadron collisions

On J/psi Production in Nuclear Collisions

Data on J/psi production in inelastic proton-proton, proton-nucleus and nucleus-nucleus interactions at 158 A GeV are analyzed and it is shown that the ratio of mean multiplicities of J/psi mesons and pions is the same for all these collisions. This observation is difficult to understand within current models of J/psi production in nuclear collisions based on the assumption of hard QCD creation of charm quarks.Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures, significant changes introduce

Alternative splicing in a presenilin 2 variant associated with Alzheimer disease

    Get PDF
Objective: Autosomal-dominant familial Alzheimer disease (AD) is caused by by variants in presenilin 1 (PSEN1), presenilin 2 (PSEN2), and amyloid precursor protein (APP). Previously, we reported a rare PSEN2 frameshift variant in an early-onset AD case (PSEN2 p.K115Efs*11). In this study, we characterize a second family with the same variant and analyze cellular transcripts from both patient fibroblasts and brain lysates. Methods: We combined genomic, neuropathological, clinical, and molecular techniques to characterize the PSEN2 K115Efs*11 variant in two families. Results: Neuropathological and clinical evaluation confirmed the AD diagnosis in two individuals carrying the PSEN2 K115Efs*11 variant. A truncated transcript from the variant allele is detectable in patient fibroblasts while levels of wild-type PSEN2 transcript and protein are reduced compared to controls. Functional studies to assess biological consequences of the variant demonstrated that PSEN2 K115Efs*11 fibroblasts secrete less AÎČ₁-₄₀ compared to controls, indicating abnormal Îł-secretase activity. Analysis of PSEN2 transcript levels in brain tissue revealed alternatively spliced PSEN2 products in patient brain as well as in sporadic AD and age-matched control brain. Interpretation: These data suggest that PSEN2 K115Efs*11 is a likely pathogenic variant associated with AD. We uncovered novel PSEN2 alternative transcripts in addition to previously reported PSEN2 splice isoforms associated with sporadic AD. In the context of a frameshift, these alternative transcripts return to the canonical reading frame with potential to generate deleterious protein products. Our findings suggest novel potential mechanisms by which PSEN variants may influence AD pathogenesis, highlighting the complexity underlying genetic contribution to disease risk.Jacquelyn E. New results of 116Cd double beta decay study with 116CdWO4 scintillators

    Get PDF
A new phase of 116Cd double beta decay experiment is in progress in the Solotvina Underground Laboratory. Four enriched 116CdWO4 scintillators with total mass 339 g are used in a set up, whose active shield is made of 15 natural CdWO4 crystals (20.6 kg). The background rate in the energy interval 2.5-3.2 MeV is 0.03 counts/y*kg*keV. The half-life for 2-neutrino 2-beta decay of 116Cd is measured as T{1/2}(2-neutrino) = [2.6+-0.1(stat)-0.4+0.7}(syst)]*10**19 y. The T{1/2} limits for neutrinoless 2-beta decay of 116Cd are set as T{1/2} >= 0.7(2.5)*10**23 y at 90%(68%) C.L. for transition to ground state of 116Sn, while for decays to the first 2+ and second 0+ excited levels of 116Sn as T{1/2}>=1.3(4.8)*10**22 y and >=0.7(2.4)*10**22 y with 90%(68%) C.L., respectively. For 0-neutrino 2-beta decay with emission of one or two Majorons, the limits are T{1/2}(0-neutrino M1) >=3.7(5.8)*10**21 y and T{1/2}(0-neutrino M2)>=5.9(9.4)*10**20 y at 90%(68%) C.L. Restrictions on the value of the neutrino mass, right-handed admixtures in the weak interaction, and the neutrino-Majoron coupling constant are derived as: m(neutrino)<=2.6(1.4) eV, eta <=3.9*10**-8, lambda <=3.4*10**-6, and g{M}<= 12(9.5)*10**-5 at 90%(68%) C.L., respectively.Comment: 28 pages, 9 figures (LaTeX). Jet energy measurement with the ATLAS detector in proton-proton collisions at root s=7 TeV

    Get PDF
The jet energy scale and its systematic uncertainty are determined for jets measured with the ATLAS detector at the LHC in proton-proton collision data at a centre-of-mass energy of √s = 7TeV corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 38 pb-1. Jets are reconstructed with the anti-kt algorithm with distance parameters R=0. 4 or R=0. 6. Jet energy and angle corrections are determined from Monte Carlo simulations to calibrate jets with transverse momenta pT≄20 GeV and pseudorapidities {pipe}η{pipe}<4. 5. The jet energy systematic uncertainty is estimated using the single isolated hadron response measured in situ and in test-beams, exploiting the transverse momentum balance between central and forward jets in events with dijet topologies and studying systematic variations in Monte Carlo simulations. The jet energy uncertainty is less than 2. 5 % in the central calorimeter region ({pipe}η{pipe}<0. 8) for jets with 60≀pT<800 GeV, and is maximally 14 % for pT<30 GeV in the most forward region 3. 2≀{pipe}η{pipe}<4. 5. The jet energy is validated for jet transverse momenta up to 1 TeV to the level of a few percent using several in situ techniques by comparing a well-known reference such as the recoiling photon pT, the sum of the transverse momenta of tracks associated to the jet, or a system of low-pT jets recoiling against a high-pT jet. More sophisticated jet calibration schemes are presented based on calorimeter cell energy density weighting or hadronic properties of jets, aiming for an improved jet energy resolution and a reduced flavour dependence of the jet response. The systematic uncertainty of the jet energy determined from a combination of in situ techniques is consistent with the one derived from single hadron response measurements over a wide kinematic range. The nominal corrections and uncertainties are derived for isolated jets in an inclusive sample of high-pT jets. Special cases such as event topologies with close-by jets, or selections of samples with an enhanced content of jets originating from light quarks, heavy quarks or gluons are also discussed and the corresponding uncertainties are determined. © 2013 CERN for the benefit of the ATLAS collaboration

Search for the neutral Higgs bosons of the minimal supersymmetric standard model in pp collisions at root s=7 TeV with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search for neutral Higgs bosons of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model (MSSM) is reported. The analysis is based on a sample of proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 7TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The data were recorded in 2011 and correspond to an integrated luminosity of 4.7 fb-1 to 4.8 fb-1. Higgs boson decays into oppositely-charged muon or τ lepton pairs are considered for final states requiring either the presence or absence of b-jets. No statistically significant excess over the expected background is observed and exclusion limits at the 95% confidence level are derived. The exclusion limits are for the production cross-section of a generic neutral Higgs boson, φ, as a function of the Higgs boson mass and for h/A/H production in the MSSM as a function of the parameters mA and tan ÎČ in the mhmax scenario for mA in the range of 90GeV to 500 GeV. Search for direct production of charginos and neutralinos in events with three leptons and missing transverse momentum in √s=7 TeV pp collisions with the ATLAS detector

    Get PDF
A search for the direct production of charginos and neutralinos in final states with three electrons or muons and missing transverse momentum is presented. The analysis is based on 4.7 fb(-1) of root s = 7 TeV proton-proton collision data delivered by the Large Hadron Collider and recorded with the ATLAS detector. Observations are consistent with Standard Model expectations in three signal regions that are either depleted or enriched in Z-boson decays. Upper limits at 95% confidence level are set in R-parity conserving phenomenological minimal supersymmetric models and in simplified models, significantly extending previous results. (C) 2012 CERN. Monitoring and data quality assessment of the ATLAS liquid argon calorimeter

    Get PDF
The liquid argon calorimeter is a key component of the ATLAS detector installed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider. The primary purpose of this calorimeter is the measurement of electron and photon kinematic properties. It also provides a crucial input for measuring jets and missing transverse momentum. An advanced data monitoring procedure was designed to quickly identify issues that would affect detector performance and ensure that only the best quality data are used for physics analysis. This article presents the validation procedure developed during the 2011 and 2012 LHC data-taking periods, in which more than 98% of the proton-proton luminosity recorded by ATLAS at a centre-of-mass energy of 7-8 TeV had calorimeter data quality suitable for physics analysis
