    Improved QSAR modeling of anti-HIV-1 acivities by means of the optimized correlation weights of local graph invariants

    We report the results derived from the use of molecular descriptors calculated with the correlation weights (CWs) of local graph invariants for modeling of anti-HIV-1 potencies of two groups of reverse transcriptase inhibitors. The presence of different chemical elements in the molecular structure of the inhibitors and the Morgan extended connectivity values of zeroth-, first-, and second order have been examined as local graph invariants in the labeled hydrogen-filled graphs. We have computed via Monte Carlo optimization procedure the values of CWs which produce the largest possible correlation coefficient between the numerical data on the anti-HIV-1 potencies and those values of the descriptors on the training set.     Diseño de un Programa para el Mantenimiento Preventivo de la Infraestructura en Plantas Procesadoras de Piña (PINDECO S.A.)

    Proyecto de Graduación (Licenciatura en Ingeniería en Construcción), Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica, Escuela de Ingeniería en Construcción, 2011.El presente proyecto consiste en el Diseño de un Programa de Mantenimiento de Infraestructura en Plantas Procesadoras de Piña, acorde con las políticas ambientales y normas vigentes para este tipo de edificación. Para la elaboración del programa debe realizarse primero la inspección y evaluación de la infraestructura existente, con el objetivo de comprobar el estado general y vida útil de los componentes que la conforman. La Infraestructura de la Planta Empacadora está compuesta por un complejo de 7 edificaciones, todas cumplen una función específica y vital para el proceso productivo de la planta, su construcción se inició en el año 1983 y a la fecha se le han realizado ampliaciones importantes para aumentar la capacidad de la Planta Empacadora. La creación de un Programa de Mantenimiento para este tipo de infraestructura se justifica por la necesidad primordial de la compañía Pindeco S.A, de mantener y mejorar el “corazón” de sus actividades productivas. Entre los objetivos propuestos, se encuentran el análisis de las normas ISO y su relación e importancia en procesos de construcción y mantenimiento de infraestructura. Con la elaboración del trabajo, se obtuvieron varios resultados, entre los cuales que en su mayoría la infraestructura de la Planta se encuentran en buenas condiciones de servicio, es necesario realizar mantenimientos preventivos en ciertos sectores y correctivos donde sea necesario para asegurar una mayor vida útil y mejor condición de servicio. Por último, se realiza el diseño del Programa de Mantenimiento según las necesidades presentes en la Planta y se proponen mejoras a implementar para garantizar el cumplimiento de la normativa ISO.Instituto Tecnológico de Costa Rica: Escuela de Ingeniería en Construcción; PINDECO S.A

    Additive SMILES-Based Carcinogenicity Models: Probabilistic Principles in the Search for Robust Predictions

    Optimal descriptors calculated with the simplified molecular input line entry system (SMILES) have been utilized in modeling of carcinogenicity as continuous values (logTD50). These descriptors can be calculated using correlation weights of SMILES attributes calculated by the Monte Carlo method. A considerable subset of these attributes includes rare attributes. The use of these rare attributes can lead to overtraining. One can avoid the influence of the rare attributes if their correlation weights are fixed to zero. A function, limS, has been defined to identify rare attributes. The limS defines the minimum number of occurrences in the set of structures of the training (subtraining) set, to accept attributes as usable. If an attribute is present less than limS, it is considered “rare”, and thus not used. Two systems of building up models were examined: 1. classic training-test system; 2. balance of correlations for the subtraining and calibration sets (together, they are the original training set: the function of the calibration set is imitation of a preliminary test set). Three random splits into subtraining, calibration, and test sets were analysed. Comparison of abovementioned systems has shown that balance of correlations gives more robust prediction of the carcinogenicity for all three splits (split 1: rtest2=0.7514, stest=0.684; split 2: rtest2=0.7998, stest=0.600; split 3: rtest2=0.7192, stest=0.728)

    Improving cost and time control in construction using Building Information Model (BIM): a review

    The control of cost and time in construction projects is one of the most important issues in construction since the emergence of the construction industry. A successful project should meet not only quality output standards, but also time and budget objectives. The management and control of cost and time in construction is fundamental in every project. An effective cost and time management and control technique for construction projects is important in managing risk of cost overrun and delay in completion of projects. Construction projects are becoming more complex as they now involve many stakeholders from different disciplines. The emergence of Building Information Model (BIM), an alternative technology is believed to solve issues related to project cost and time control as it efficiently increases collaboration between stakeholders. The aim of this paper is to review and summarise the causes of delay and cost overrun in construction industries, which are the main causes of disputes and abandonment of projects in the industry. It was found that delays and cost overrun eat deep into the industry and leave the construction industry with a bad image for decades even with rapid advancement in technology. The review of the applications of BIM showed that most of the applications are geared towards minimising construction cost and time spent on projects. This means that the use of BIM in the management of construction projects has great impact on project cost and time

    DisProt: intrinsic protein disorder annotation in 2020

    The Database of Protein Disorder (DisProt, URL: https://disprot.org) provides manually curated annotations of intrinsically disordered proteins from the literature. Here we report recent developments with DisProt (version 8), including the doubling of protein entries, a new disorder ontology, improvements of the annotation format and a completely new website. The website includes a redesigned graphical interface, a better search engine, a clearer API for programmatic access and a new annotation interface that integrates text mining technologies. The new entry format provides a greater flexibility, simplifies maintenance and allows the capture of more information from the literature. The new disorder ontology has been formalized and made interoperable by adopting the OWL format, as well as its structure and term definitions have been improved. The new annotation interface has made the curation process faster and more effective. We recently showed that new DisProt annotations can be effectively used to train and validate disorder predictors. We believe the growth of DisProt will accelerate, contributing to the improvement of function and disorder predictors and therefore to illuminate the ‘dark’ proteome

    Visual Laterality of Calf–Mother Interactions in Wild Whales

    Behavioral laterality is known for a variety of vertebrate and invertebrate animals. Laterality in social interactions has been described for a wide range of species including humans. Although evidence and theoretical predictions indicate that in social species the degree of population level laterality is greater than in solitary ones, the origin of these unilateral biases is not fully understood. It is especially poorly studied in the wild animals. Little is known about the role, which laterality in social interactions plays in natural populations. A number of brain characteristics make cetaceans most suitable for investigation of lateralization in social contacts.) in the greatest breeding aggregation in the White Sea. Here we show that young calves (in 29 individually identified and in over a hundred of individually not recognized mother-calf pairs) swim and rest significantly longer on a mother's right side. Further observations along with the data from other cetaceans indicate that found laterality is a result of the calves' preference to observe their mothers with the left eye, i.e., to analyze the information on a socially significant object in the right brain hemisphere.Data from our and previous work on cetacean laterality suggest that basic brain lateralizations are expressed in the same way in cetaceans and other vertebrates. While the information on social partners and novel objects is analyzed in the right brain hemisphere, the control of feeding behavior is performed by the left brain hemisphere. Continuous unilateral visual contacts of calves to mothers with the left eye may influence social development of the young by activation of the contralateral (right) brain hemisphere, indicating a possible mechanism on how behavioral lateralization may influence species life and welfare. This hypothesis is supported by evidence from other vertebrates

    Identification of heavy-flavour jets with the CMS detector in pp collisions at 13 TeV

    Many measurements and searches for physics beyond the standard model at the LHC rely on the efficient identification of heavy-flavour jets, i.e. jets originating from bottom or charm quarks. In this paper, the discriminating variables and the algorithms used for heavy-flavour jet identification during the first years of operation of the CMS experiment in proton-proton collisions at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV, are presented. Heavy-flavour jet identification algorithms have been improved compared to those used previously at centre-of-mass energies of 7 and 8 TeV. For jets with transverse momenta in the range expected in simulated tt\mathrm{t}\overline{\mathrm{t}} events, these new developments result in an efficiency of 68% for the correct identification of a b jet for a probability of 1% of misidentifying a light-flavour jet. The improvement in relative efficiency at this misidentification probability is about 15%, compared to previous CMS algorithms. In addition, for the first time algorithms have been developed to identify jets containing two b hadrons in Lorentz-boosted event topologies, as well as to tag c jets. The large data sample recorded in 2016 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV has also allowed the development of new methods to measure the efficiency and misidentification probability of heavy-flavour jet identification algorithms. The heavy-flavour jet identification efficiency is measured with a precision of a few per cent at moderate jet transverse momenta (between 30 and 300 GeV) and about 5% at the highest jet transverse momenta (between 500 and 1000 GeV)

    Two-particle correlations in azimuthal angle and pseudorapidity in inelastic p + p interactions at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron

    Results on two-particle ΔηΔϕ correlations in inelastic p + p interactions at 20, 31, 40, 80, and 158 GeV/c are presented. The measurements were performed using the large acceptance NA61/SHINE hadron spectrometer at the CERN Super Proton Synchrotron. The data show structures which can be attributed mainly to effects of resonance decays, momentum conservation, and quantum statistics. The results are compared with the Epos and UrQMD models.ISSN:1434-6044ISSN:1434-605
