The establishment of immigrants in the area and the cultural diversity that they have brought to our society have made the integration challenge one of our main public goals. In the Valencian region, some towns have been radically changed as a result of this situation. This is the case of Gandia, a town with a 24% foreign population in which several policies for promoting integration and interculturalism have been undertaken. Immigrant organisations have played an important role in the configuration of this town as a pole of diversity. Policies and citizens’ participation are thus two key elements in the process of integration and coexistence in the city. This paper analyzes the role that local government and immigrants’ organizations have played in this process, based on data obtained from comprehensive qualitative research

The importance of developing Social Work programmes with immigrants groups from a psico-social point of view has originated the creation of a Psico-Social Intervention Programme for groups of immigrants by Médicos del Mundo- Comunidad Valenciana. This programme aims the creation of mutual support areasand social networks, undelining, especially, the cooperation of these people in the resolution of their own problems. In this way, they are both achieved the creation of social networks which will improve the situation of their members on the one hand ,and on the other hand, the implication of these members in the creation and monitoring of other groups with similar objective

Development of a distributed application over R3 Corda

Nowadays, technology is growing by leaps and bounds and during the last few years blockchain technology is growing very fast, we are seeing how even banks are partnering to incorporate this technology in their business. With this thesis we aim to study a blockchain network created by R3 enterprise which is presented as a network for the private sector in which they want to give strict privacy in transactions. We want to study the inner workings of this network, for example what types of nodes it has, how it builds its ledger, how it creates the blockchain. And how it provides this strict privacy. For this we will develop an application on this network to see how its ledger works, how those states are stored in the nodes and its blockchain. We will see how the ledger is not distributed to all the nodes, each one of them has its own. And we will see that in the blockchain only those transactions that are related are chained together.

A disk inside the bipolar planetary nebula M2-9

Bipolarity in proto-planetary and planetary nebulae is associated with events occurring in or around their cores. Past infrared observations have revealed the presence of dusty structures around the cores, many in the form of disks. Characterising those dusty disks provides invaluable constraints on the physical processes that govern the final mass expulsion of intermediate-mass stars. We focus this study on the famous M2-9 bipolar nebula, where the moving lighthouse beam pattern indicates the presence of a wide binary. The compact and dense dusty core in the center of the nebula can be studied by means of optical interferometry. M2-9 was observed with VLTI/MIDI at 39-47 m baselines with the UT2-UT3 and UT3-UT4 baseline configurations. These observations are interpreted using a dust radiative transfer Monte Carlo code. A disk-like structure is detected perpendicular to the lobes and a good fit is found with a stratified disk model composed of amorphous silicates. The disk is compact, 25×\times35 mas at 8μm\rm \mu m, and 37×\times46 mas at 13μm\rm \mu m. For the adopted distance of 1.2 kpc, the inner rim of the disk is ∼\sim15 AU. The mass represents a few percent of the mass found in the lobes. The compactness of the disk puts strong constraints on the binary content of the system, given an estimated orbital period 90-120yr. We derive masses of the binary components between 0.6--1.0M_{\sun} for a white dwarf and 0.6--1.4M_{\sun} for an evolved star. We present different scenarios on the geometric structure of the disk accounting for the interactions of the binary system, which includes an accretion disk as well.Comment: 9 figures, A&A accepte

Family change in Latin America: schooling and labor market implications for children and women

    Get PDF
This chapter provides an account of the major family transformations that occurred in recent decades across Latin American and Caribbean countries and examines the implications of such transformations for children’s school attendance and progress and women’s labor force participation. Latin American and Caribbean families and households have undergone substantial changes in recent years while keeping some of their distinctive features unchanged (Esteve et al., 2022; Esteve & Florez-Paredes, 2018a; Juárez & Gayet, 2014). This combination of stability and change has had profound transformations in the family status in which women raise their children and the family context in which children are raised. We refer to family context as the combination of women`s marital status and the type of households in which children reside. We combine references to the literature and own calculations based on Latin American and Caribbean population census samples, available at the Integrated Public-use Microdata Series International (IPUMS) (Minnesota Population Center, 2020). We use data from 25 countries based on the most recent census microdata and, in some instances, historical samples starting in the late 1950s (see Appendix 1)

This chapter provides an account of the major family transformations that occurred in recent decades across Latin American and Caribbean countries and examines the implications of such transformations for children's school attendance and progress and women's labor force participation. Latin American and Caribbean families and households have undergone substantial changes in recent years while keeping some of their distinctive features unchanged (Esteve et al.,2022; Esteve & Florez-Paredes, 2018a; Juárez & Gayet, 2014). This combination of stability and change has had profound transformations in the family status in which women raise their children and the family context in which children are raised. We refer to family context as the combination of women's marital status and the type of households in which children reside. We combine references to the literature and own calculations based on Latin American and Caribbean population census samples, available at the Integrated Public-use Microdata Series International (IPUMS) (Minnesota Population Center, 2020). We use data from 25 countries based on the most recent census microdata and, in some instances, historical samples starting in the late 1950s (see Appendix 1). The chapter is organized as follows. First, we document trends in family change and children's status. To illustrate family change empirically, we focus on women aged 25 to 29 and children aged 7 to 16. For reasons that will be displayed during the paper, these groups offer a reliable overview of major transformations with the advantage of avoiding overlapping cohorts when data are analyzed over time. Variations by educational attainment are also examined to illustrate the role of inequality of opportunities in family change. Second, we focus on the implications of family forms on children's school attendance and progress and women's participation in the labor market. In the absence of tailored indicators about progress in cognitive and non-cognitive skills, school attendance and progress are standard indicators of early human capital accumulation (UNESCO, 2022). We examine these two outcomes among more than 15 million children included in the IPUMS-I census samples. For women, we examine the degree of participation in the labor market (n = 16 million). We consider the implications of family contexts on children's outcomes and women's labor force participation as mere associations within variables as we cannot investigate the mechanisms and causal relationships that produce such outcomes. To strengthen our interpretation, we rely on existing studies with causality-oriented designs and discuss the potential linkages among family structures, women's labor force participation, and children's well'-being (Amador & Bernal Rose et al., 2017; S. Reynolds et al., 2018). The chapter ends with a discussion of the main results, including their relation with other chapters and existing studies, and suggestions for future research
