    Growth characteristics of the silverstripe blaasop (Lagocephalus sceleratus Gmelin, 1789) in Antalya bay

    Bu tez çalışmasında, Antalya Körfezi’ndeki benekli balon balığı Lagocephalus sceleratus (Gmelin, 1789) türünün büyüme özellikleri araştırılmıştır. Nisan 2010 – Kasım 2011 tarihlerini kapsayan dönemde, toplam 321 benekli balon balığı trol ve kıyı balıkçılarından temin edilmiştir. Toplanan örneklerin total boyları 5.9 cm ile 46.3 cm arasında değişiklik göstermiştir. Ağırlık ve boy ölçümleri alınan 115 balığın boy ağırlık ilişkisi W = 0,0228L2,91 olarak ifade edilmiştir. Lagocephalus sceleratus türünün büyüme parametreleri, boy frekans verileri kullanılarak, FISAT-II bilgisayar programında yer alan ELEFAN-I rutini ile hesaplanmıştır. Boy – frekans analizinde, ikişer cm’lik boylara göre gruplanan veri, yaz (Haziran + Ağustos), ilkbahar (Nisan) ve sonbahar (Eylül + Kasım) olmak üzere mevsimsel kullanılmıştır. Elde edilen von Bertalanffy büyüme denklemi Lt = 48.2 [1 - e -0.52 (t + 0.27)] olarak hesaplanmıştır.In this study, growth characteristics of the silverstripe blaasop (Lagocephalus sceleratus Gmelin,1789) was investigated in Antalya Bay. A sample of 321 fish with total lengths ranging from 5.9 cm to 46.3 cm was collected from trawl and coastal fisheries between April 2010 and November 2011. Growth and length data were measured from 115 of the fish, with a length – weight relationship of W = 0,0228L2,91. Growth parameters of Lagocephalus sceleratus were calculated using the ELEFAN-I routine of the FISAT-II software, using length frequency data. In length frequency analysis, seasonal data was used and data was classified as per 2 cm length groups, containing three seasons: summer (June + August), spring (April) and fall (September + November). The von Bertalanffy growth equation was calculated as Lt = 48.2 [1 - e -0.52 (t + 0.27)]

    The us demand for defense spending : An empirical investigation for the post-cold war era

    Bu çalışmada, Smith (1989)'in ortaya koyduğu neoklasik çerçevede, ABD savunma yükü talebi tahmin edilmeye çalışılmıştır. Veriler, BEA ve SIPRI'den elde edilmiş olup, tahmin yöntemi için nispeten yeni bir metot olan ME-boot kayan pencereler yöntemi kullanılmıştır. ABD'nin savunma harcamalarının GDP'deki payının (savunma yükü), kendi gecikmesi, ekonominin büyüme hızı, nispi savunma maliyeti, Rusya ve Çin savunma yükleri ile anlamlı bir ilişki içinde olduğu saptanmıştır. ABD savunma yükü talebinde kurumsal bürokratik durağanlığın büyük bir rol oynadığı görülmüş, farklı zaman aralıklarında saptanan pozitif, negatif ve anlamsız sonuçlardan dolayı büyümenin etkisi için kesin bir yargıya varılamayacağı belirtilmiştir. Savunma fiyatlarının sivil fiyatlara oranı, ABD savunma yükünün belirlenmesinde genel olarak pozitif bir etkiye sahipken, bu etkinin yüksek askeri hareketlilik dönemlerinde artış içinde olduğu gözlemlenmiştir. Smith'in orijinal teorisinde bulunan ve veri eksikliğinden dolayı geçmiş ampirik çalışmalara dâhil edilmemiş olan fiyat etkisi, bu çalışma sayesinde görülebilmiştir. 2000 yılından itibaren Rusya ve Çin savunma yüklerinin, ABD askeri kararlarına olan pozitif etkisi tespit edilmiştir. Ne var ki ABD'nin 2012 yılında itibaren uygulamaya koyduğu yeni Asya-Pasifik denge politikası sonrası, günümüze Rusya'nın artık önemli bir tehdit olmaktan çıktığı, Çin'in ise askeri alanda ABD'nin yeni büyük rakibi olduğu tespit edilmiştir.Based on Smith (1989)'s neoclassical framework, the US demand for defense spending as a share of GDP (defense burden) is estimated by employing a relatively newly developed method called Me-boot rolling windows analysis using quarterly BEA and SIPRI data for the Post-Cold War times. While institutional inertia plays an important role in determining the US defense burden in general, there is no conclusive result concerning the growth rate since positive, negative, and insignificant effects were all observed for different time periods. The US defense burden was found to be well correlated with the price ratio of defense goods to civilian goods during times of high military mobilization probably due to the increasing demand for defense goods. The price effect in Smith's original theory that has been omitted in previous empirical studies due to data unavailability was, thus, confirmed. Both Russian and Chinese defense burdens were found to be important determinants of the US defense decisions after the 2nd millennium. However, since the implementation of the US new Asia-Pacific rebalance policy in 2012, no significant result was reported concerning the Russian threat while there was evidence towards a rising rivalry between the US and China in great extent. This, in turn, suggests that the US military policy follows its foreign policy closely in a very dynamic way

    Closing the gap between software engineering education and industrial needs

    According to different reports, many recent software engineering graduates often face difficulties when beginning their professional careers, due to misalignment of the skills learnt in their university education with what is needed in industry. To address that need, many studies have been conducted to align software engineering education with industry needs. To synthesize that body of knowledge, we present in this paper a systematic literature review (SLR) which summarizes the findings of 33 studies in this area. By doing a meta-analysis of all those studies and using data from 12 countries and over 4,000 data points, this study will enable educators and hiring managers to adapt their education / hiring efforts to best prepare the software engineering workforce

    Aircraft Damage Classification by using Machine Learning Methods

    Safety is the most significant factor that affected incidents (non-fatal) and accidents (fatal) in civil aviation history related to scheduled flights. In the history of scheduled flights, the total incident and accident number until 2022 is 1988. In this study, 677 of them are taken into consideration since 11 September 2001. The purpose of this study is to reveal the factors that can classify type of aircraft damages such as none, minor and substantial in all-time incidents and accidents. ML algorithms with different configurations are applied for the classification process. The RFE and PCA are used to find the most important factors that are effective on the classification. Four components are found with PCA as zone, weather, time, and history. The results of multinomial logistic regression and ANNs showed that the most important 5 features are latitude, wind speed, wind direction, year, and longitude to classify aircraft damage. Then, temperature, total number of injury passenger, and month factors comes with more than 50% importance. The managerial implication of the study shows that as time passes the number of substantial accidents has decreased due to increasing level of safety precautions in civil aviation

    Designing Science Learning Domains for 2e (Twice Exceptional) Students

    2e (twice-exceptional) students are gifted and differently-abled, so they need specific learning domains according to their needs. This research aimed to design science learning domains for a 2e (gifted and blind) student to enhance his critical thinking in his special learning needs in Ankara province in Turkey in the 2020-2021 academic year's first term. Single-subject research was employed. The 2e student was ten years old. Through the application process, the 2e student argued 3D modeled Schrödinger's cat thought experiment. The main application's intervention was conducted to provide the research's internal validity since it was single-subject research. Through the intervention application, the 2e student argued 3D modeled Schrödinger's twin cats thought experiment. We noted both social dialectic argumentation processes as texts, and these texts were used as data collecting tools. Descriptive analysis was utilized to gathered data. The study showed that the 2e student could construct arguments containing claim, data, warrant, and weak rebuttals in the main application, which meant his argumentation quality level was average, so his critical thinking too. In contrast, the 2e student-constructed arguments containing claim, data, weak rebuttal, and rebuttal meant his argumentation quality level enhanced his critical thinking

    Cytogenetics are almost always based on the examination of the fixed mitotic chromosomes during the analyses of metaphase. During this phase of the cycle of cells, the DNA is folded up and chromatin is strongly condensed. The relative position of the centromere is constant, which means that the ratio of the lengths of the two arms is constant for each chromosome. Importantly, each chromosome displays a unique banding pattern. Different staining methods showed the banding pattern (g band), centromere position (c band), cytophotometric estimation and specific DNA regions (FISH).     Teaching Design Patterns Using Interactive Methods

    Even though design patterns are one of the most important building blocks in the current software engineering ecosystem, computer science and software engineering graduates face trouble applying these patterns. To address this, we propose a tutorial and an online lab assessment method to solidify the idea of design patterns for students. The tutorial part integrates a live coding session. The online lab assessment consists of a three-stage process (designing a solution using a class diagram, peer review, and implementation) where students are expected to come up with a fully working solution using design patterns. The proposed approach is applied twice over two semesters to a total sum of 196 students. We discuss the effects of these interactive educational methods on learning by comparing pre-surveys, post-surveys and analyzing final grades. The analysis of the surveys shows that live coding is highly beneficial in enhancing the understanding of design patterns

    Hymenoptera of Nide province: Studies on Sphecidae fauna

    The present study is based on 1240 specimens obtained from the field studies in the vicinity of Ankara province in Turkey between the years of 2006 - 2008. In fauna studies carried out in Nide province between May 2006 - October 2008, the specimens of Sphecinae Latreille, 1802, PempheredoninaeDahlbom, 1835, Astatianae Lepeletier, 1845, Crabroninae Latreille, 1802, Bembicinae Latreille, 1802, Philanthinae Latreille, 1802 sub-families belonging to Sphecidae family were collected. 52 of the collected specimens are new records for Nide province. Astata pontica Pulawski, 1958 species is anew record for Turkey
