30 pagesThe surge of hydraulic fracturing in the United States has spawned concern over public health risks associated with the practice. Some states, such as New York, have ultimately banned hydraulic fracturing citing significant environmental and public health hazards. Nationally, debate over regulation of hydraulic fracturing has taken center stage

Cross-seasonal effects on reproductive performance of Pacific black brant

Thesis (M.S.) University of Alaska Fairbanks, 2001We used re-sightings of Pacific Black Brant from San Quintin Bay, Ojo de Lieber Lagoon, and San Ignacio Lagoon, Baja California and Boundary Bay, British Columbia, to examine winter population structure, variation in structural size and the importance of winter location to individual reproductive performance at the Tutakoke River colony. Sexes of adults and juveniles were distributed equally among winter locations. Adult structural size and mean age were similar among winter locations. A higher proportion of juveniles over-wintered in San Quinton Bay and Ojo de Liebre Lagoon. Individuals wintering at Ojo de Liebre and San Ignacio lagoons were less likely to breed and initiated clutches later than those that wintered in Boundary Bay or San Quinton Bay. Maternal mass did not vary, although clutch size was slightly larger in individuals that wintered in southern areas. Variation in winter location and habitat quality could influence individual reproductive performance and population dynamics

The Evolution of Schools of Phillips County, Kansas

    Get PDF
The development of schools in the various counties throughout Western Kansas is often taken as a matter of course by many people. However, the growth that has taken place since the first school was conducted in a dugout or maybe in a sodhouse out on the prairie which had to be guarded against Indian attacks and buffalo herds, to our present elaborate and modern system of education is not a mere matter of incidence. Every student of political science considers the period of settlement on the western prairie as one of the most interesting and courageous in American history. Likewise, the student in education is highly interested in the establishment of pioneer schools; the hardships, trials, and tribulations of the period. He is also interested in the course of study prescribed at that time and the trends in education from then to the present. The problem in this study is to recapture in so far as may be obtained essential facts and data concerning the evolution of schools in Phillips County, Kansas, that is, to trace the story of growth. To be more specific the problem of the thesis is the portrayal of The Evolution of Schools in Phillips County, Kansas

How users assess web pages for information-seeking

    Get PDF
In this paper, we investigate the criteria used by online searchers when assessing the relevance of web pages for information-seeking tasks. Twenty four participants were given three tasks each, and indicated the features of web pages which they employed when deciding about the usefulness of the pages in relation to the tasks. These tasks were presented within the context of a simulated work-task situation. We investigated the relative utility of features identified by participants (web page content, structure and quality), and how the importance of these features is affected by the type of information-seeking task performed and the stage of the search. The results of this study provide a set of criteria used by searchers to decide about the utility of web pages for different types of tasks. Such criteria can have implications for the design of systems that use or recommend web pages

Extended producer responsibility (EPR) and packaging regulations in Argentina: reflections on the aspects associated with the blocking of the draft legislation initiatives

    Get PDF
For more than two decades there has been an on-going debate in Argentina about the draft bills presented to congress for the management of packaging waste and the notion of extended producer responsibility. This article analyses the points of agreement and controversies among the stakeholders with respect to their approach to the debate. The analysis basically covers the discussions around three key issues related to a proposed packaging waste management system: the obliged subjects liable to make contributions, the state or private nature of the entity responsible for managing such system, and the role of the waste pickers and their organizations. A number of secondary sources were consulted (legislative files, dossiers, public records and bibliography), and several interviews were conducted to a number key actors (specialists in this field, legislative advisers, waste picker’s referents, law makers, public servants and technical experts) for the writing of this paper.Fil: Schamber, Pablo Javier. Conflict in the Workplace: An Empirical Analysis of the Antecedents and Resolutions

    Get PDF
Various types of conflict can be identified in organizations, such as interpersonal conflict, team conflict, and inter-group conflict. Conflict resolution is crucial in the workplace to create a healthy and happy work environment employees want to work in. Without effective conflict resolution, it would be hard for people to get along, quality work wouldn’t get done, and it would be difficult to communicate effectively between employees, teams, and departments. This report will focus on the different underlying causes of conflict at the individual level in the workplace and what strategies are used to solve these conflicts. The information collected for the report has been conducted through two surveys with employees from Fastenal. This study offers ways to find the best strategies to overcome interpersonal conflict in the workplace.https://openriver.winona.edu/urc2019/1095/thumbnail.jp

Value Based Marketing for Fed Cattle: A Discussion of the Issues

    Get PDF
Beef demand in the United States began to weaken relative to the demand for pork and poultry in the 1970s. The literature offers two possible explanations: 1) the lifestyles explanation; and 2) the relative-price explanation. Barkema and Drabenstott (1990) review the literature concerning the market share issue and concisely outline the two possible explanations: The lifestyle argument suggests that consumers chose to eat less beef due to health concerns and changes in lifestyles. The relative-prices explanation suggests consumers switched from beef to poultry because beef became relatively more expensive than poultry. The issue of improving beefs competitiveness against other domestic meat products and foreign imports has been discussed widely by groups associated with the beef industry. One possible strategy that has been seriously considered is a new Value Based Marketing System (VBMS) for finished cattle. This strategy is articulated in the Value Based Marketing Task Force final report(1990), published by the National Cattlemen\u27s Beef Association (NCBA). Based on the report\u27s findings, the task force gave a strong recommendation for the development of a new marketing system (application of discounts and premiums beyond dressed weight & grade) that will encourage producers to raise leaner cattle that still will grade USDA low choice or higher. In turn, leaner cattle will reduce revenue loss due to fat (estimated at $2 billion per year) and increase consumption of leaner beef by fat conscious consumers. Thus, a new VBMS (beyond dressed weight & grade) will address both the lifestyle and relative-price dilemmas
