Ética profesional en la búsqueda de bases de datos y motores de búsqueda: problemas, cuestiones, soluciones

The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of ethical concerns related to professional information searching from both a historical and contemporary point of view. Basic ethical questions and issues for searchers are formulated. A suggestion is made that a set of ethical guidelines for online searchers formu-lated a quarter century ago could be used, with some revision, even today. It is also suggested that “first do no harm” be the primary ethical principle for searchers. Following this a number of ethical guidelines for searchers and searching are formulated. Conclusions stress the importance of ethical consideration in searching.Se proporciona una revisión de los problemas éticos relacionados con la búsqueda profesional de información tanto desde un punto de visto histórico como actual. Se formulan las cuestiones éticas básicas a las que se enfrentan los profesionales de la recuperación de la información. Se sugiere que el conjunto de recomendaciones éticas para búsquedas de información en línea que se elaboraron hace un cuarto de siglo pueden ser usadas, con las necesarias actualizaciones, también en el presente. A partir de ellas, se presenta y desarrolla un conjunto de recomendaciones éticas para los recuperadores de información y los procesos de búsqueda. Las conclusiones enfatizan la importancia de las consideraciones éticas en la búsqueda

Computational Geometry Applications

Computational geometry is an integral part of mathematics and computer science deals with the algorithmic solution of geometry problems. From the beginning to today, computer geometry links different areas of science and techniques, such as the theory of algorithms, combinatorial and Euclidean geometry, but including data structures and optimization. Today, computational geometry has a great deal of application in computer graphics, geometric modeling, computer vision, and geodesic path, motion planning and parallel computing. The complex calculations and theories in the field of geometry are long time studied and developed, but from the aspect of application in modern information technologies they still are in the beginning. In this research is given the applications of computational geometry in polygon triangulation, manufacturing of objects with molds, point location, and robot motion planning

Tecnologia da informação, sistemas de informação e informação como utilidade pública

Para resolver os modernos problemas da informação muitos tipos de sistemas de informação evoluíram utilizando uma tecnologia da informação correspondente. Entretanto, a julgar por suas reações, parece que o problema dos usuários em obter infor-mação relevante não foi aliviado de maneira significativa, e, pior ainda, parece que muitas soluções baseadas na nova tecnologia da informação resultaram em novas barreiras, impondo novos níveis de complexidade e dificuldade para o usuário. Uma nova orientação dos sistemas de informação para os usuários parece ser necessária. Uma solução é considerar os sistemas de informação como um tipo de empresa de utilidade pública. "Utilidade pública" pode fornecer uma estrutura conceitual em torno da qual alguns sistemas de informação podem ser organizados, minimizando alguns problemas da informação. Este trabalho originou-se de um estudo intitulado Projeto INFUT (INFormation UTility) que procura investigar as condições em que vários sistemas e fontes de informação podem ser encarados como utilidade pública. Os seguintes tópicos são focalizados com detalhe: — características e propriedades de serviços de utilidade pública a partir das quais podemos derivar características e propriedades da informação como utilidade pública; — propriedades da informação e de sistemas de informação que podem afetar o desenvolvimento da informação como utilidade pública; — propriedades da tecnologia e da tecnologia da informação particularmente as que devem ser consideradas no desenvolvimento de serviços de informação de utilidade pública; — tentativas para especificar as propriedades dos serviços de informação como utilidade pública. Abstract To resolve the modern information problems many types of information systems evolved with corresponding uses of information technology. However, from many user reactions it seems that the user's problem in getting relevant information has not been significantly alleviated and even worse, it seems that many solutions based in the new information technology resulted in new barriers, imposing new leveis of complexity and difficultv for the user. A reorientation of information systems toward users seems to be in order. One approach is to consider information systems as a utility type of enterprise. Utilities may provide a conceptual framework around which some information systems may be organized and some information problems may be alleviated. This paper is derived from a study named Project INPUT (INFormation UTility) which is attempting to uncover conditions under which a wide variety of information sources and systems could be considered as a utility. The following areas are discussed in detail: — the characteristics and properties of public utilities from which we can start discussing characteristics and properties of information utilities. — the properties of information and information systems that will affect the development of information utilities. — the properties of technology in general and information technology in particular that should be taken into account in the development of information utilities. — the attempts to specify properties of information utilities

How users assess web pages for information-seeking

In this paper, we investigate the criteria used by online searchers when assessing the relevance of web pages for information-seeking tasks. Twenty four participants were given three tasks each, and indicated the features of web pages which they employed when deciding about the usefulness of the pages in relation to the tasks. These tasks were presented within the context of a simulated work-task situation. We investigated the relative utility of features identified by participants (web page content,structure and quality), and how the importance of these features is affected by the type of information-seeking task performed and the stage of the search. The results of this study provide a set of criteria used by searchers to decide about the utility of web pages for different types of tasks. Such criteria can have implications for the design of systems that use or recommend web pages

Relevantnost je jedan od pojmova u informacijskoj znanosti općenito, može se čak reći i najvažniji, a u pretraživanju informacija, posebno. Ovaj kritički pregled prati razvoj i daje sintezu istraživanja relevantnosti tijekom proteklih trideset godina s naglaskom na podacima eksperimentalnih istraživanja i istraživanja metodama promatranja. U svrhu logičke povezanosti, povijesne napomene sažimaju zanimanje za relevantnost u informacijskoj znanosti, a potom slijedi rasprava o intuitivnom značenju relevantnosti i o njenom značenju u informacijskoj znanosti. U glavnom dijelu daje se sinteza eksperimenata o ponašanju relevantnosti. Taj dio završava zaključcima koji ustvari daju pojašnjenje i sintezu suvremenih promišljanja o relevantnosti kao i hipoteze za buduća istraživanja. Analize nekih glavnih smjerova koji definiraju relevantnost iznesene su u epilogu.Relevance is a, if not even the, key notion in information science in general and information retrieval in particular. This critical review traces and synthesizes the scholarship on relevance over the past 30 years with the concentration on experimental and observational studies that report data. For context, a historical note summarizes relevance concerns in information science, followed by discussion of the meaning of relevance intuitively and in information science. In the major section, the experiments related to relevance behavior are synthesized. The section concludes with summaries that in effect provide an interpretation and synthesis of contemporary thinking on the topic treated or suggests hypotheses for future research. Analyses of some of the major trends that shape relevance work are offered in the epilogue

Integrating in librarianship information

Relação entre a biblioteconomia, a ciência da informação e o enquadramento da ciência da informação no ensino da biblioteconomia. Os progressos da ciência da informação contribuem para um quadro teórico e novos serviços profissionais. A emergência e abrangência da ciência da informação são abordadas sucintamente. O conteúdo das três áreas de trabalho em ciência da informação é discutido: (i) profissional (aplicada e prática), (ii) tecnológica e (iii) científica básica. Os esforços e problemas do ensino em ciência da informação são revistos, especialmente no tratamento dado, a esse ensino, pelas escolas de biblioteconomia. Recomendações para a integração curricular e geral da biblioteconomia e da ciência são feitas. Abstract Library education all over world is under many pressures, which are enumerated. The paper concentrates on the relation between subject of librarianship, the subject of information science and the accommodation of information science in library education. Library education needs to take into account advances in information science because they provide neva theoretical frameworks and new professional services. The emergence and domain of information science is briefly reviewed. The content of three areas of work in information science is discussed: (i) professional (applied, practical), (ii) technological and (iii) scientific (basic). Efforts and problems in information science education are reviewed, particularly as trated in library schools. A natureza interdisciplinar da ciência da informação

Discute a natureza e tendências da ciência da informação nas suas relações interdisciplinares. No início, a origem e antecedentes sociais da ciência da informação apresentam-se seguidos de uma descrição da evolução da recuperação da informação, a atividade principal da ciência da informação. A evolução das relações interdisciplinares é avaliada no que concerne a quatro áreas: biblioteconomia, ciência da computação, ciência cognitiva, inclusive inteligência artificial e comunicação. Nas conclusões, apresentam-se os desafios à ciência da informação prosseguidos de três assuntos críticos: mudanças sociais contemporâneas, a revolução tecnológica e mudanças interdisciplinares. A ciência da informação tem um papel a realizar nestes assuntos

Economic and Technical Evaluation of Flexible Power GenerationScenarios for a Biogas Plant

Biogas plants can contribute significantly to the integration of renewable energy sources in the energy system due to their flexible operability. The storability of the energy carrier enables them to generate power in a demand-oriented way and to participate in electricity markets that focus on balancing power supply and demand. In this study process simulation was used to investigate the economic and technical effects of flexible power generation on an Austrian biogas plant that focuses on biomethane production. Three different power generation scenarios were evaluated considering participation in the electricity spot market and markets for control energy reserves, while continuously producing biomethane. The results show that no major technical adaptions are needed for flexible power generation but an appropriate support scheme (premium system) is required to make demand-oriented power generation economically viable. The determined required premium was 37.3-99.9 EUR/MWh depending on the power generation scenario
