Generalization of the Lee-O'Sullivan List Decoding for One-Point AG Codes

We generalize the list decoding algorithm for Hermitian codes proposed by Lee and O'Sullivan based on Gr\"obner bases to general one-point AG codes, under an assumption weaker than one used by Beelen and Brander. Our generalization enables us to apply the fast algorithm to compute a Gr\"obner basis of a module proposed by Lee and O'Sullivan, which was not possible in another generalization by Lax.Comment: article.cls, 14 pages, no figure. List Decoding Algorithm based on Voting in Groebner Bases for General One-Point AG Codes

We generalize the unique decoding algorithm for one-point AG codes over the Miura-Kamiya Cab curves proposed by Lee, Bras-Amor\'os and O'Sullivan (2012) to general one-point AG codes, without any assumption. We also extend their unique decoding algorithm to list decoding, modify it so that it can be used with the Feng-Rao improved code construction, prove equality between its error correcting capability and half the minimum distance lower bound by Andersen and Geil (2008) that has not been done in the original proposal except for one-point Hermitian codes, remove the unnecessary computational steps so that it can run faster, and analyze its computational complexity in terms of multiplications and divisions in the finite field. As a unique decoding algorithm, the proposed one is empirically and theoretically as fast as the BMS algorithm for one-point Hermitian codes. As a list decoding algorithm, extensive experiments suggest that it can be much faster for many moderate size/usual inputs than the algorithm by Beelen and Brander (2010). It should be noted that as a list decoding algorithm the proposed method seems to have exponential worst-case computational complexity while the previous proposals (Beelen and Brander, 2010; Guruswami and Sudan, 1999) have polynomial ones, and that the proposed method is expected to be slower than the previous proposals for very large/special inputs.Comment: Accepted for publication in J. Review of health information technology usability study methodologies

Usability factors are a major obstacle to health information technology (IT) adoption. The purpose of this paper is to review and categorize health IT usability study methods and to provide practical guidance on health IT usability evaluation. 2025 references were initially retrieved from the Medline database from 2003 to 2009 that evaluated health IT used by clinicians. Titles and abstracts were first reviewed for inclusion. Full-text articles were then examined to identify final eligibility studies. 629 studies were categorized into the five stages of an integrated usability specification and evaluation framework that was based on a usability model and the system development life cycle (SDLC)-associated stages of evaluation. Theoretical and methodological aspects of 319 studies were extracted in greater detail and studies that focused on system validation (SDLC stage 2) were not assessed further. The number of studies by stage was: stage 1, task-based or user–task interaction, n=42; stage 2, system–task interaction, n=310; stage 3, user–task–system interaction, n=69; stage 4, user–task–system–environment interaction, n=54; and stage 5, user–task–system–environment interaction in routine use, n=199. The studies applied a variety of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Methodological issues included lack of theoretical framework/model, lack of details regarding qualitative study approaches, single evaluation focus, environmental factors not evaluated in the early stages, and guideline adherence as the primary outcome for decision support system evaluations. Based on the findings, a three-level stratified view of health IT usability evaluation is proposed and methodological guidance is offered based upon the type of interaction that is of primary interest in the evaluation

Insights from the first global population estimate of Weddell seals in Antarctica

The Weddell seal is one of the best-studied marine mammals in the world, owing to a multidecadal demographic effort in the southernmost part of its range. Despite their occurrence around the Antarctic coastline, we know little about larger scale patterns in distribution, population size, or structure. We combined high-resolution satellite imagery from 2011, crowd-sourcing, and habitat modeling to report the first global population estimate for the species and environmental factors that influence its distribution. We estimated ~202,000 (95% confidence interval: 85,345 to 523,140) sub-adult and adult female seals, with proximate ocean depth and fast-ice variables as factors explaining spatial prevalence. Distances to penguin colonies were associated with seal presence, but only emperor penguin population size had a strong negative relationship. The small, estimated population size relative to previous estimates and the seals' nexus with trophic competitors indicates that a community ecology approach is required in efforts to monitor the Southern Ocean ecosystem

The Use of Unusual Psychological Theories in Psychobiography: A Case Study and Discussion

This chapter argues for the use of ‘unusual’ theories in psychobiographical research through the presentation of a case study using such a theory. Historically, psychobiographical research has predominantly made use of the work of psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theorists and developmental theorists, while more recent psychobiographical approaches have preferred more modern, empirically based. However, over reliance on a few theories within psychobiographical research creates the possibility for narrow explanations of complex lives. Given the proliferation of theoretical modes in psychology the current use of theory barely scratches the surface of available explanatory paradigms. This chapter argues for the value of casting the explanatory net wider, and for the inclusion of more psychological theories in psychobiographical work. Using a psychobiographical case study, the chapter illustrates how a ‘forgotten’ psychological theory (script theory, based on the work of Tomkins) can serve as an extremely useful explanatory paradigm for a complex religious figure. The case study focuses on Gordon Hinckley (b. 1910, d. 2008), the fifteenth president of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (commonly referred to as the Mormon Church), who remains a prominent figure in contemporary Mormonism and played a key role in the rapid growth and increasingly positive public profile of the Religion throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Using Tomkins’ script theory in conjunction with a psychobiographical method and the analysis of data gathered from published speeches, this study explores Hinckley’s personality structure and identifies three core psychological scripts
