Investigation of The Iodination of Some of The Ortho Substituted Phenols

    Get PDF
In this investigation the ortho substituted phenols used were o-cresol, o-chlorophenol, o-hydroxybenzaldehyde, salicylic acid, methyl salicylate, ethyl salicyla te, 8-hydroxyquinoline, o-cyclohexyl phenol, o-octyl phenol, and o-nitrophenol. One member of the group, o-benzylphenol, was not obtainable at the time of the investigation . The bactericidal, germicidal and fungicidal activities of the iodinated ortho substituted phenols were not determined in this investigation due to lack of time. In addition, the investigator has not had experience in bacteriology or mycology and feels that such an investigation should be carried out by someone with experience in that field

Paper Session I-A - Employing Artificial Intelligence to Meet Space Requirements

    Get PDF
In January 1989, AFSTC began the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Initiative as a means of accomplishing two objectives: 1) to determine requirements in the Air Force space community that could best be met employing AI techniques and 2) to ensure current programs were adequate to meet these requirements. The approach was to determine requirements by surveying the users, identify current programs, and then identify redundancies and omissions for the purpose of recommending a future course of action. Ten requirements were identified as being well-suited for AI techniques. Three of these requirements were determined to have high payoff and be attainable in the near term. The three requirements are range scheduling, intelligent consoles for satellite control, and intelligent computer aided training. In identifying current projects, it was found that the majority of the space related AI work is performed by NASA. Projects at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Johnson Space Center, and Lewis Research Center were found to be directly applicable to Air Force requirements. Sharing of space-related technology is currently being addressed through the Space Technology Interdependency Group. This paper discusses the results of the AI Initiative including the ten requirements and related projects. Also discussed are the future plans for AI in AFSTC

DOUBTED LOVE: The Tyranny of Pornography and Jeff Koons’ Made in Heaven series

In 1990, New York based artist Jeff Koons presented a body of related works under the poetically vague title “Made in Heaven” which presented sculptures and photographs of the artist and his then wife (former adult industry star Ilona Staller, known as La Cicciolina) in various moments and positions of passion. Colorful and glossy, pointedly referencing the stylistics and aesthetic conditions of Rococo painting and sculpture and undeniably explicit in the depictions of arousal, intercourse and the acrobatics of love-making, the series was generally, indeed, almost universally vilified. But what was strikingly overlooked was that the series constituted a carefully considered and calculated interrogation of questions surrounding representations of sexuality in the age of mass media. Through an analysis and contextualization of select Made in Heaven works, this paper explores the ways in which Koons dismantles cultural binaries in order to challenge and expand the limitations of erotic art

Enhancing awareness of story structure through folk tales in a Chapter I reading program

    Get PDF
One means of implementing the whole language concept into a Chapter I reading program is providing quality literature experiences that are relevant to the students. Traditional basal texts and remedial materials often present reading as fragments of whole units of language and focus on arbitrary skill development (Goodman, 1987). Such texts give only a partial view of what reading is about and do not promote enjoyment of reading. Children, especially those who tend to be global learners, have difficulty relating to this material (Carbo, 1987)

Impacts of Policy on Electric Vehicle Diffusion

Selection and design of appropriate government policies to support electric vehicle (EV) adoption can be aided by modelling the future impact of policy instruments relative to a given baseline estimate. This paper highlights the innovative application of a diffusion model to analyse complex impacts of EV policy instruments on future incremental EV uptake. Several versions of four key policy instruments are tested in the model: linking electric vehicle sales to Renewable Electricity Purchases (RE-EV), financial subsidies, smart charging incentives and a common cost metric to educate consumers about the lifetime costs of EVs. Market share between battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs), hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) and internal combustion engine vehicles (ICEVs) were forecasted out to the year 2034 across all 1.5 million households in the state of Victoria, Australia. The RE-EV scenario had the strongest performance in terms of economic and societal indicators. Non-subsidy policy instruments can also support uptake of EVs, especially in the case of encouraging BEV adoption. We found feebate scenarios were more effective policies than rebates. Rebate and feebate scenarios applied within the 2014-2019 timeframe compared better than those with longer timeframes. Our analyses showed how combined policy scenarios not only further improved EV uptake but also allowed government to fund rebates through feebate income

Development of a kayak race prediction including environmental and athlete effects

    No full text
The aim of this study is to produce a simulator for sprint kayak racing which would allow the prediction of race times based on the physiological capabilities and mass of a given athlete. The simulator has been verified using established empirical data for the prediction of environmental effects and has been shown to be accurate, however verification of the physiological model is difficult to do by using general race data. An investigation into the fatigue model which has been implemented shows that further investigation is required to calibrate the simulator and produce more accurate results over a variety of distances. However, the simulator does show quite how sensitive the selection of appropriate level of effort is to the final race time for the 1000m
