A hybridizable discontinuous Galerkin method for electromagnetics with a view on subsurface applications

Two Hybridizable Discontinuous Galerkin (HDG) schemes for the solution of Maxwell's equations in the time domain are presented. The first method is based on an electromagnetic diffusion equation, while the second is based on Faraday's and Maxwell--Amp\`ere's laws. Both formulations include the diffusive term depending on the conductivity of the medium. The three-dimensional formulation of the electromagnetic diffusion equation in the framework of HDG methods, the introduction of the conduction current term and the choice of the electric field as hybrid variable in a mixed formulation are the key points of the current study. Numerical results are provided for validation purposes and convergence studies of spatial and temporal discretizations are carried out. The test cases include both simulation in dielectric and conductive media

Received: January 31st, 2023 ; Accepted: April 9th, 2023 ; Published: April 27th, 2023 ; Correspondence: [email protected] Livestock Farming offers opportunities for automated, continuous monitoring of animals, their productivity, welfare and health. The video-based assessment of animal behaviour is an automated, non-invasive and promising application. The aim of this study is to identify possible parameters in dairy cows’ lying behaviour that are the basis for a holistic computer vision-based system to assess animal health and welfare. Based on expert interviews and a literature review, we define parameters and their optimum in form of gold standards to evaluate lying behaviour automatically. These include quantitative parameters such as daily lying time, lying period length, lying period frequency and qualitative parameters such as extension of the front and hind legs, standing in the lying cubicles, or total lateral position. The lying behaviour is an example within the research context for the development of a computer vision-based tool for automated detection of animal behaviour and appropriate housing design

User-Centered Visual Design of Alarms in Manufacturing Dashboards: Insights on Comprehensibility and Preferences

    Get PDF
The digitization of the manufacturing domain results in an enormous amount of available data decision-makers are continuously exposed to. Consequently, critical alarm information must be easily comprehensible and suit decision-makers’ preferences to facilitate timely reactions and thus prevent harm to production processes and employees. However, despite its importance, academia and practice show little consensus regarding alarm design in manufacturing dashboards. Against this background, the purpose of our study is twofold. First, we identified 5 factors for visual alarm design with overall 12 design options in a structured literature review. Second, we investigated the effect these design options have on users’ comprehension and preferences in a conjoint study and a best-worst scaling approach with 98 participants with experience working in manufacturing. Our results show that alarm description and their visual integration are the most important factors for alarm design. In this regard, a cluster analysis reveals more nuanced and more stable preferences in more experienced users. Further, we find that color-coding-based content classification entails best performance in recognizing alarms. We contribute to academia and practice by providing actionable insights that may support improving alarm design in manufacturing

Variational multiscale approximation of the one-dimensional forced Burgers equation: the role of orthogonal subgrid scales in turbulence modeling

This is the accepted version of the following article: [Bayona C, Baiges J, Codina R. Variational multi-scale approximation of the one-dimensional forced Burgers equation: the role of orthogonal subgrid scales in turbulence modeling. Int J Numer Meth Fluids. 2018;86:313–328. https://doi.org/10.1002/fld.4420], which has been published in final form at http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/fld.4420/fullA numerical approximation for the one-dimensional Burgers equation is proposed by means of the orthogonal subgrid scales–variational multiscale (OSGS-VMS) method. We evaluate the role of the variational subscales in describing the Burgers “turbulence” phenomena. Particularly, we seek to clarify the interaction between the subscales and the resolved scales when the former are defined to be orthogonal to the finite-dimensional space. Direct numerical simulation is used to evaluate the resulting OSGS-VMS energy spectra. The comparison against a large eddy simulation model is presented for numerical discretizations in which the grid is not capable of solving the small scales. An accurate approximation to the phenomena of turbulence is obtained with the addition of the purely dissipative numerical terms given by the OSGS-VMS method without any modification of the continuous problem.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Effect of Periodontal Treatment on HbA1c among Patients with Prediabetes

Evidence is limited regarding whether periodontal treatment improves hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) among people with prediabetes and periodontal disease, and it is unknown whether improvement of metabolic status persists >3 mo. In an exploratory post hoc analysis of the multicenter randomized controlled trial “Antibiotika und Parodontitis” (Antibiotics and Periodontitis)—a prospective, stratified, double-blind study—we assessed whether nonsurgical periodontal treatment with or without an adjunctive systemic antibiotic treatment affects HbA1c and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) levels among periodontitis patients with normal HbA1c (≀5.7%, n = 218), prediabetes (5.7% 1 mm in both groups. In the normal HbA1c group, HbA1c values remained unchanged at 5.0% (95% CI, 4.9% to 6.1%) during the observation period. Among periodontitis patients with prediabetes, HbA1c decreased from 5.9% (95% CI, 5.9% to 6.0%) to 5.4% (95% CI, 5.3% to 5.5%) at 15.5 mo and increased to 5.6% (95% CI, 5.4% to 5.7%) after 27.5 mo. At 27.5 mo, 46% of periodontitis patients with prediabetes had normal HbA1c levels, whereas 47.9% remained unchanged and 6.3% progressed to diabetes. Median hsCRP values were reduced in the normal HbA1c and prediabetes groups from 1.2 and 1.4 mg/L to 0.7 and 0.7 mg/L, respectively. Nonsurgical periodontal treatment may improve blood glucose values among periodontitis patients with prediabetes (ClinicalTrials.gov NCT00707369)

Artificial boundaries and formulations for the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations. Applications to air and blood flows.

    Get PDF
International audienceWe deal with numerical simulations of incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in truncated domain. In this context, the formulation of these equations has to be selected carefully in order to guarantee that their associated artificial boundary conditions are relevant for the considered problem. In this paper, we review some of the formulations proposed in the literature, and their associated boundary conditions. Some numerical results linked to each formulation are also presented. We compare different schemes, giving successful computations as well as problematic ones, in order to better understand the difference between these schemes and their behaviours dealing with systems involving Neumann boundary conditions. We also review two stabilization methods which aim at suppressing the instabilities linked to these natural boundary conditions

Die variationelle Mehrskalen-Methode fĂŒr laminare und turbulente Strömungen

    No full text
The present thesis addresses a new approach for solving numerically instationary, incompressible flow governed by the appropriate set of Navier-Stokes equations. This approach named 'variational multiscale method' has recently been introduced as a powerful means for problems of computational mechanics having to deal with large ranges of scales. Such notably widened scale ranges emerge in various flow situations. At large, this study aims firstly at the development of a general framework for the numerical solution of the Navier-Stokes equations based on the variational multiscale method. Secondly, a specific implementation within a Galerkin finite method is realized based on this general framework. Finally, an extensive test program for the developed method in form of sample laminar and turbulent flow situations is conducted.
