The pH Response and Sensing Mechanism of n-Type ZnO/Electrolyte Interfaces
Ever since the discovery of the pH-sensing properties of ZnO crystals, researchers have been exploring their potential in electrochemical applications. The recent expansion and availability of chemical modification methods has made it possible to generate a new class of electrochemically active ZnO nanorods. This reduction in size of ZnO (to a nanocrystalline form) using new growth techniques is essentially an example of the nanotechnology fabrication principle. The availability of these ZnO nanorods opens up an entire new and exciting research direction in the field of electrochemical sensing. This review covers the latest advances and mechanism of pH-sensing using ZnO nanorods, with an emphasis on the nano-interface mechanism. We discuss methods for calculating the effect of surface states on pH-sensing at a ZnO/electrolyte interface. All of these current research topics aim to explain the mechanism of pH-sensing using a ZnO bulk- or nano-scale single crystal. An important goal of these investigations is the translation of these nanotechnology-modified nanorods into potential novel applications
Experimental evidence on the development of scale invariance in the internal structure of self-affine aggregates
It is shown that an alternative approach for the characterization of growing
branched patterns consists of the statistical analysis of frozen structures,
which cannot be modified by further growth, that arise due to competitive
processes among neighbor growing structures. Scaling relationships applied to
these structures provide a method to evaluate relevant exponents and to
characterize growing systems into universality classes. The analysis is applied
to quasi-two-dimensional electrochemically formed silver branched patterns
showing that the size distribution of frozen structures exhibits scale
invariance. The measured exponents, within the error bars, remind us those
predicted by the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation.Comment: 11 pages, 4 figure
The correlation between dealer and customer satisfaction in the automotive industry
Customer satisfaction is one of the biggest goals companies have. Therefore, it is important to understand internal or external factors influencing and relating to customer satisfaction. During the last years, there were a lot of discussions about the influence of employee satisfaction on customer satisfaction. A positive impact of dealer satisfaction on customer satisfaction can be expected in the automotive sector. Here, not all parts of the dealerâs satisfaction with the performance of the manufacturer will have an equal influence. In this study, the author investigated, which dimensions of dealer satisfaction have an impact on customerâs sales- and/or service satisfaction. The question was explored using data from a German premium automotive manufacturer. All information on the dealerâs satisfaction with the performance of the manufacturer as well as the dealerâs satisfaction with the sales- and service-process was collected and after a Dimension Test analyzed and tested by means of the Hierarchical Linear Model method. As expected, the hypothesis stating that dealer satisfaction exerts a positive influence on service satisfaction was confirmed.. There were however no significant results providing evidence for the impact of the dealer satisfaction on sales satisfaction. It is worth noting that only dimensions with relationship components, dimensions that focus lesson products and/or standardized performance, show effects on customer satisfaction. The relevance of these personal elements and the differentiation between service - and sales-process are discussed
Electrolytic decomposition and photodecomposition of compound semiconductors in contact with electrolytes
Electrons and holes affect the bond strength of surface atoms. Therefore, in most systems their surface concentration controls the rate of electrolytic decomposition reactions. The thermodynamics of such reactions are characterized by their redox potentials which are equivalent to the Fermi energies of electrons or holes. It is shown that the energy positions of the redox Fermi levels for decomposition with respect to the position of the band edges and the Fermi levels of competing redox reactions, give an immediate indication for the susceptibility of a semiconductor to electrolytic decomposition. This concept is especially useful for the discussion of photodecomposition where the electronic free energy can be described by individual quasiâFermi levels for electrons and holes. Data are given for the semiconductors ZnO, TiO_2, Cu_2O, CdS, MoS_2, GaP, and GaAs. A model for bond breaking by holes at a kink site of a compound semiconductor is discussed to demonstrate what role the surface bond character plays for the height of activation barriers and how kinetics modify the thermodynamic conclusions on stability
Magnetic field-induced phase transitions in a weakly coupled s = 1/2 quantum spin dimer system BaCrO
By using bulk magnetization, electron spin resonance (ESR), heat capacity,
and neutron scattering techniques, we characterize the thermodynamic and
quantum phase diagrams of BaCrO. Our ESR measurements indicate that
the low field paramagnetic ground state is a mixed state of the singlet and the
S = 0 triplet for . This suggests the presence of an intra-dimer

Einfluss von PACAP bzw. des PACAP-Rezeptors PAC1 auf Morphologie und Expression Inflammations-/ Apoptose-/ Atheroskleroserelevanter Proteine/ Zytokine im Myokard bei ApoE defizienten MĂ€usen unter cholesterinreicher âWestern Type Dietâ
Atherosclerotic changes in our western society are a very common pathogenesis which can cause cardiovascular diseases like myocardial infarction or [chronic] heart failure. It seems that the PACAP-System [âPituitary Adenylate Cyclase-Activating Polypeptideâ] with its receptor PAC1 plays a very important role in the development of such pathologic processes. PACAP belongs to the âvasoactive intestinal Peptide [VIP]- sekretin- somatoliberin Glucagon superfamily and is the only ligand that is able to bind at the PAC1-receptor. The PAC1-receptor is expressed mainly in the myocardium and might be able to influence the occurrence of inflammatory and anti-inflammatory cytokines that could act cardioprotective. Furthermore, the PACAP-system seems like to play an important role in influencing the outcome and development of the ischemic heart disease.
In this Study we examined the outcome of the deficiency of PACAP and PAC1 in the myocardium of mice based on inflammatory, atherosclerotic and apoptosis relevant cytokines and proteins. We also examined the rate of infiltration of macrophages in the myocardium. The mice we examined had the following genotypes: 1. PACAP+/+ / PAC1+/+ / ApoE+/+ [short: WT]; 2. PACAP+/+ / PAC1+/+ / ApoE-/- [short: ApoE-/-]; 3. PACAP-/- / PAC1+/+ / ApoE-/-; 4. PACAP+/+ / PAC1-/- / ApoE-/-. All mice have been fed with a âWestern Type Dietâ over the period of 20 weeks, starting with the age of 10 weeks. Blood samples were taken to measure the levels of plasma-cholesterol and plasma-triglycerides. The ratio of the heart weight and length of the tibia were calculated. We examined samples of the myocardium covering COX2+-, MuRF-1+-, Moma-2+-, LOX-1+-, IL1-Ă+-, TNF-α+- and Lectin+-cells. Furthermore, the composition of every myocardium in regard of the amino acids were also studied.
The plasma triglyceride levels of ApoE-/- -mice in comparison to WT-mice and of PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice in comparison to ApoE-/--mice didnât differ significantly. However, PACAP-/- / ApoE-/--mice by comparison to ApoE-/--mice showed an 60,6% increase of this level. Plasma cholesterol only showed an increase [tenfold] with ApoE-/--mice in comparison to WT-mice, whereas the levels in PACAP-/- / ApoE-/--, and PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice in comparison to ApoE-/--mice were similar. The relative heart weight was in the PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--population 18,1% lower in comparison to the ApoE-/--population. ApoE-/--, in comparison to WT-mice and PACAP-/- / ApoE-/-- mice in comparison to ApoE-/--mice didnât show a significant change in the relative heart weights. The COX2+-cells showed a higher occurrence of 22% in the ApoE-/--, versus WT-mice and of 55,7% in the PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice versus the ApoE-/--mice. MuRF-1+-cells had in ApoE-/--mice compared to the WT-mice a 116,7% higher density, furthermore PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--, and PAC1-/- / ApoE-/-- mice showed an 51,2% and 66,7% increase in comparison with ApoE-/--mice. In addition, the density of macrophages was measured with the Moma-2-antibody which showed a 25,9% decline in the PACAP-/- / ApoE-/--mice, and a 44,2% decrease in the PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice compared to the ApoE-/--mice. The capillary supply of the myocardium [density of Lectin+-cells] showed only at the PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice in comparison with the WT-mice a 24,5% lower density. Furthermore, LOX-1+-cells were counted [marker for the ongoing atherosclerotic occurrence] and showed only in PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice a 44,47% higher activity compared to ApoE-/--mice. Also, the concentration of the amino acids the myocardium contains showed in PACAP-/- / ApoE-/--, and PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice a 23,6% and 20,9% lower concentration in comparison to ApoE-/--mice. Furthermore, the aminoacids Phosphatidyl-serine which is part of the apoptose-signalpathway and the gamma-amino-butter-acid which has anti-inflammatory characteristics, showed a 22% and 36,7% lower concentration in PACAP-/- / ApoE-/-- mice and a 21,8% and 18,2% lower concentration in PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice, all compared to ApoE-/--mice.
The findings of our study show by the higher density of COX2+-positive- cells an inflammatory environment in the myocardium under the deficiency of PACAP and PAC1. Only PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice showed in combination with an ongoing atherosclerotic process [higher density with LOX1+-cells] a higher density of MuRF-1+-cells which indicates atrophy of the myocardium. In addition, we found a positive correlation between the density of MuRF-1+-cells and COX2+-cells, which underlines a connection between the atrophy and inflammation. Interestingly, PACAP-/- / ApoE-/--mice didnât show a significant change in heart weight, higher density in COX2+-cells and LOX1+-cells but a higher density in MuRF-1+-cells. Furthermore, the deficiency of PACAP and PAC1 didnât change the expression of cytokines like TNF-α, IL1-Ă and the infiltration of macrophages was also unchanged. The capillary supply measured with the density of Lectin+-cells also didnât show any significant difference. The lower concentration of the amino acids seemed only to influence the heart weight of the PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice, while amino acids, like Phosphatidyl-serine and GABA, only influenced the environment in PAC1-/- / ApoE-/--mice as well. In comparison to another study of our researchgroup (Dissertation Gohlke 2017), mice with the same genotype were fed âNormal dietâ over the time of 30 weeks before being examined. The findings showing lighter heart weights and lower triglyceride, and cholesterol levels in the plasma [effect of cholesterol-enriched-diet]. Furthermore, comparing it to the raw data of our study the density of COX1+-cells, MuRF-1+-, LOX-1+-, Moma-2+-, and Lectin+-cells was higher. The data of the amino acids also showed a lower concentration.
In summary, we conclude that PAC1 is able to influence the environment in the myocardium, has anti-inflammatory and anti-atherogenic features and influences local atrophic processes. Comparing all the collected data, with all the collected references gives PAC1 the ability to effect inflammatory processes [COX2], the expression of pro-atherogenic mediators [LOX-1] positively and subdues cardiac atrophy [MuRF-1] under a âWestern Type Dietâ. PACAP doesnât seem to have these abilities under the feeding with a âWestern Type Dietâ, so other mechanisms must play an additional role, like the VIP-System or the persisting hypertriglyceridemia over a longer period of time. For future studies, the period of feeding [longer vs. shorter period] and the impact of the deficiency of the VIP-system would represent a good possibility in regard of a possible effect on the inflammatory and pro-atherogenic environment in the myocardium.
Electrochemical mapping reveals direct correlation between heterogeneous electron-transfer kinetics and local density of states in diamond electrodes
Conducting carbon materials: A multi-microscopy approach shows that local heterogeneous electron-transfer rates at conducting diamond electrodes correlate with the local density of electronic states. This model of electroactivity is of considerable value for the rational design of conducting diamond electrochemical technologies, and also provides key general insights on electrode structure controls in electrochemical kinetic
Acute porphyrias â A neurological perspective
Acute hepatic porphyrias (AHP) can cause severe neurological symptoms involving the central, autonomic, and peripheral nervous system. Due to their relative rarity and their chameleon-like presentation, delayed diagnosis and misdiagnosis are common. AHPs are genetically inherited disorders that result from heme biosynthesis enzyme deficiencies and comprise four forms: acute intermittent porphyria (AIP), variegate porphyria (VP), hereditary coproporphyria (HCP), and ALA-dehydratase porphyria (ALADP). Depending on the clinical presentation, the main differential diagnoses are Guillain-Barré syndrome and autoimmune encephalitis. Red flags that could raise the suspicion of acute porphyria are neurological symptoms starting after severe (abdominal) pain, in association with reddish urine, hyponatremia or photodermatitis, and the presence of encephalopathy and/or axonal neuropathy. We highlight the diagnostic difficulties by presenting three cases from our neurological intensive care unit and give a comprehensive overview about the diagnostic findings in imaging, electrophysiology, and neuropathology
Magnetoelastic and structural properties of azurite Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2 from neutron scattering and muon spin rotation
Azurite, Cu3(CO3)2(OH)2, has been considered an ideal example of a
one-dimensional (1D) diamond chain antiferromagnet. Early studies of this
material imply the presence of an ordered antiferromagnetic phase below K while magnetization measurements have revealed a 1/3 magnetization
plateau. Until now, no corroborating neutron scattering results have been
published to confirm the ordered magnetic moment structure. We present recent
neutron diffraction results which reveal the presence of commensurate magnetic
order in azurite which coexists with significant magnetoelastic strain. The
latter of these effects may indicate the presence of spin frustration in zero
applied magnetic field. Muon spin rotation, SR, reveals an onset of
short-range order below 3K and confirms long-range order below .Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, PHYSICAL REVIEW B 81, 140406(R) (2010
