    Redesign of technical systems

    The paper describes a systematic approach to support the redesign process. Redesign is the adaptation of a technical system in order to meet new specifications. The approach presented is based on techniques developed in model-based diagnosis research. The essence of the approach is to find the part of the system which causes the discrepancy between a formal specification of the system to be designed and the description of the existing technical system. Furthermore, new specifications are generated, describing the new behaviour for the `faulty¿ part. These specifications guide the actual design of this part. Both the specification and design description are based on YMIR, an ontology for structuring engineering design knowledge

    Early occipital sensitivity to syntactic category is based on form typicality

    Syntactic factors can rapidly affect behavioral and neural responses during language processing; however, the mechanisms that allow this rapid extraction of syntactically relevant information remain poorly understood. We addressed this issue using magnetoencephalography and found that an unexpected word category (e.g., “The recently princess . . . ”) elicits enhanced activity in visual cortex as early as 120 ms after exposure, and that this activity occurs as a function of the compatibility of a word’s form with the form properties associated with a predicted word category. Because no sensitivity to linguistic factors has been previously reported for words in isolation at this stage of visual analysis, we propose that predictions about upcoming syntactic categories are translated into form-based estimates, which are made available to sensory cortices. This finding may be a key component to elucidating the mechanisms that allow the extreme rapidity and efficiency of language comprehension

    The Effect of Uric Acid Levels on Bone Metabolism in Postmenopausal Women

    Objective:The decrease in estrogen levels leads to oxidative stress by accumulating reactive oxygen species in the cell and suppressing the antioxidant defense system. Thus, the activity of osteoclasts and bone resorption are stimulated. It is stated that uric acid may contribute to the bone mineral density (BMD) due to antioxidant specialty. In our study; we investigated the relationship among serum uric acid levels, BMD and other bone metabolic markers in women with the postmenopausal period. Materials and Methods: BMD and laboratory data (glucose, urea, creatinine, calcium, phosphorus, alkaline phosphatase, uric acid, parathyroid hormone, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels) of 141 postmenopausal women aged between 50 and 69 were evaluated. The participants were divided into three groups according to the t-score. These were; the patients with t-score -1 were normal BMD group. Biochemical tests were measured by photometric method and hormone tests were measured by electrochemiluminescence method. Results:Uric acid levels were significantly higher in the osteopenia group than the normal BMD group (p=0.023). There was no statistically significant difference in uric acid levels between the osteoporosis-steopenia and the osteoporosis-normal BMD groups. No correlation was found between uric acid levels and BMD in all groups. While there was a negative correlation in uric acid levels between the postmenopausal osteopenia and the normal BMD groups (r=-0.423, p=0.016), there was no a significant difference between the osteoporosis and the normal BMD groups (p>0.05). Conclusion:As a result of our study, it is difficult to mention a clear relationship between uric acid and lumbar BMD in postmenopausal women. We believe that further studies are needed for solving the uric acid riddle and explaining the effect on bone metabolism. In addition, uric acid levels in patients with postmenopausal osteopenia should be examined in detail

    How Virtual Agents Can Learn to Synchronize: an Adaptive Joint Decision-Making Model of Psychotherapy

    Joint decision-making can be seen as the synchronization of actions and emotions, usually via nonverbal interaction between people while they show empathy. The aim of the current paper was (1) to develop an adaptive computational model for the type of synchrony that can occur in joint decision-making for two persons modeled as agents, and (2) to visualize the two persons by avatars as virtual agents during their decision-making. How to model joint decision-making computationally while taking into account adaptivity is rarely addressed, although such models based on psychological literature have a lot of future applications like online coaching and therapeutics. We used an adaptive network-oriented modelling approach to build an adaptive joint decision-making model in an agent-based manner and simulated multiple scenarios of such joint decision-making processes using a dedicated software environment that was implemented in MATLAB. Programming in the Unity 3D engine was done to virtualize this process as nonverbal interaction between virtual agents, their internal and external states, and the scenario. Although our adaptive joint decision model has general application areas, we have selected a therapeutic session as example scenario to visualize and interpret the example simulations

    Morning brain: Real-world neural evidence that high school class times matter

    Researchers, parents and educators consistently observe a stark mismatch between biologically preferred and socially imposed sleep–wake hours in adolescents, fueling debate about high school start times. We contribute neural evidence to this debate with electroencephalogram data collected from high school students during their regular morning, mid-morning and afternoon classes. Overall, student alpha power was lower when class content was taught via videos than through lectures. Students’ resting state alpha brain activity decreased as the day progressed, consistent with adolescents being least attentive early in the morning. During the lessons, students showed consistently worse performance and higher alpha power for early morning classes than for mid-morning classes, while afternoon quiz scores and alpha levels varied. Together, our findings demonstrate that both class activity and class time are reflected in adolescents’ brain states in a real-world setting, and corroborate educational research suggesting that mid-morning may be the best time to learn

    Reanalyzing language expectations: Native language knowledge modulates the sensitivity to intervening cues during anticipatory processing

    Issue Online:21 September 2018We investigated how native language experience shapes anticipatory language processing. Two groups of bilinguals (either Spanish or Basque natives) performed a word matching task (WordMT) and a picture matching task (PictureMT). They indicated whether the stimuli they visually perceived matched with the noun they heard. Spanish noun endings were either diagnostic of the gender (transparent) or ambiguous (opaque). ERPs were time-locked to an intervening gender-marked determiner preceding the predicted noun. The determiner always gender agreed with the following noun but could also introduce a mismatching noun, so that it was not fully task diagnostic. Evoked brain activity time-locked to the determiner was considered as reflecting updating/reanalysis of the task-relevant preactivated representation. We focused on the timing of this effect by estimating the comparison between a gender-congruent and a gender-incongruent determiner. In the WordMT, both groups showed a late N400 effect. Crucially, only Basque natives displayed an earlier P200 effect for determiners preceding transparent nouns. In the PictureMT, both groups showed an early P200 effect for determiners preceding opaque nouns. The determiners of transparent nouns triggered a negative effect at similar to 430 ms in Spanish natives, but at similar to 550 ms in Basque natives. This pattern of results supports a "retracing hypothesis" according to which the neurocognitive system navigates through the intermediate (sublexical and lexical) linguistic representations available from previous processing to evaluate the need of an update in the linguistic expectation concerning a target lexical item.Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness (MINECO), Agencia Estatal de Investigación (AEI), Fondo Europeo de Desarrollo Regional (FEDER) (grant PSI2015‐65694‐P to N.
