Additive Manufacturing of Dynamic Ankle Brace

    Get PDF
Ankle sprains are the most common injury in the world’s largest sport; soccer. The current prevention methods such as ankle braces are ineffective due to its bulkiness, excessive movement, and lack of comfort. Engineered for athletes, by athletes, a 3D printed, customizable, and thin ankle brace was designed specifically for soccer players to limit inversion and eversion ankle sprains but allow natural range of motion. The specifications of the improved ankle brace are designed to allow the material properties to apply a restoring force as it reaches the exceeding ranges of motion for ankle sprains without hindering athletic performance. This brace is made to contain a geometric mesh design that combines the benefits of the classic ankle brace stirrup concept with 3D printing and modern material science to produce a customized ankle brace lighter, more malleable, and thinner than competitors and existing approaches while still allowing the athlete to perform at maximum potential. The brace will be tested and worn by soccer players upon completion of the final model. The ultimate objective is to produce a working product to be available in the commercial market for purchasing based on the provided research, experimental testing, 3D printing, and material properties

THE POPULAR CULTURE CHARACTERISTICS AND AMERICAN VALUES OF GLOBALIZED STARBUCKS COFFEE

Starbucks' popularity as a coffee company from the United States of America makes them the center of attention among coffee lovers. This it is not surprising because the most prominent coffee company has become one of the most widespread cultural phenomena in the world. Through a qualitative research and data collection from photo documentation and interview session with a Starbucks barista, manager, and some customers from Kota Lama, Semarang, this research found that the Starbucks coffee shop fulfills nine out of the ten characteristics of popular culture. The nine characteristics of popular culture that Starbucks fulfil are (1) giving satisfaction to customers; (2) being easy to obtain, (3) being eager to please, (4) reflecting society, (5) being temporary, (6) being practical, (7) creating a global-local lifestyle, (8) making profit, and (9) fulfilling popular culture’s themes. While popular culture characteristics that are not fulfilled by Starbucks is (10) manipulation. Through discussing the characteristics, thirteen dominant American values are also found. The values consist of (1) controlling the environment, (2) change, (3) the essential of time, (4) equality, (5) individualism and privacy, (6) self-help, (7) competition, (8) future orientation, (9) action and work orientation, (10) informality, (11) directness, openness and honesty, (12) practicality and efficiency, and the last is (13) materialism and acquisitiveness. Through understanding the American values, this research finds that the American Starbucks does indeed describe its hegemonic nature to support itself as the most globalized and popular coffee shop in the worl

Mixed Mimetic Spectral Element Method for Stokes Flow: A Pointwise Divergence-Free Solution

In this paper we apply the recently developed mimetic discretization method to the mixed formulation of the Stokes problem in terms of vorticity, velocity and pressure. The mimetic discretization presented in this paper and in [50] is a higher-order method for curvilinear quadrilaterals and hexahedrals. Fundamental is the underlying structure of oriented geometric objects, the relation between these objects through the boundary operator and how this defines the exterior derivative, representing the grad, curl and div, through the generalized Stokes theorem. The mimetic method presented here uses the language of differential kk-forms with kk-cochains as their discrete counterpart, and the relations between them in terms of the mimetic operators: reduction, reconstruction and projection. The reconstruction consists of the recently developed mimetic spectral interpolation functions. The most important result of the mimetic framework is the commutation between differentiation at the continuous level with that on the finite dimensional and discrete level. As a result operators like gradient, curl and divergence are discretized exactly. For Stokes flow, this implies a pointwise divergence-free solution. This is confirmed using a set of test cases on both Cartesian and curvilinear meshes. It will be shown that the method converges optimally for all admissible boundary conditions

Many adults diagnosed with a developmental disability over the age of 20 have received inadequate care in the past due to the basic techniques, lack of funding, and minimal support when they were younger. Today, these adults are now receiving adequate care with behavioral support plans incorporating personal goals that they would like to achieve. Different assessments like Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales have been utilized for children diagnosed with a disability measures a variety of skill sets one may have under the repertoire. These assessments could mold a curriculum to improve on the skills a child may lack. Even though these assessments are geared for children with developmental disabilities, they still could be utilized to assess adaptive skills especially with a focus on more complex reasoning and language amongst adults with disabilities. The present study measures the relationship between one’s adaptive skills with their complex thinking and reasoning. The assessments that were completed was the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, 2nd Edition (VABS-II) for adaptive skills and Promoting the Emergence of Advanced Knowledge Relational Training System – Transformation Module Pre-Assessment (PEAK-T PA) for complex thinking and reasoning. The results indicated a significant correlation between not only one’s adaptive skills and their complex thinking (r = 0.53, p \u3c 0.05), but also, between their expressive (r = 0.5, p \u3c 0.05), receptive (r = 0.46, p \u3c 0.05), and overall communication skills (r = 0.53, p \u3c 0.05). This study extends the research on bridging the gap between derived relations and complex thinking

The paddlefish rostrum as a structure for bio-inspiration

    Get PDF
The proposed research investigates the unique structure of the rostrum of the paddlefish (Polyodon spathula) for use in bio-inspiration. The rostrum comprises three different materials: midline cartilage, a network cartilage structure, and matrix tissue. The structure-property relationships of these materials were studied with various mechanical testing and imaging techniques. The mechanical properties and stress-strain behavior were applied to a material model that characterizes each material. A three-dimensional model was constructed from computed tomography images, and a mesh was exported for use in finite element simulations. Different boundary conditions were applied to show how the rostrum responds under deformation giving a stress distribution arising from different loadings. Finally, a new robust design paradigm is introduced with bio-inspiration introducing constraints and is explained through using the paddlefish rostrum as an example of a cell tower or antenna

Fuzzy logic implementation for the real-time control of an arterial traffic system

This thesis verifies the parameter optimization capability of fuzzy logic based algorithm on the real-time control of traffic signal. A fuzzy logic controller was developed for the control of an arterial traffic signal system consisting of three successive intersections with three-phase and four-phase traffic plan. Computer simulation was conducted to test and fine-tune the fuzzy logic controller. Testing and analysis was done by varying the traffic flow from non-congested to congested conditions. The performances of fuzzy logic controller in isolated mode and hybrid mode were compared using average delay per vehicle and link queue as criteria. Results show that the controller developed was able to adjust to the changing conditions of the traffic environment and optimizes the traffic signal parameters in both isolated and hybrid mode. The hardware integration of the fuzzy logic software in isolated mode to a miniature model of one intersection show that the fuzzy logic controller was adaptive to the changing traffic condition and effective in the real-time control of the traffic signal
