Part 1: a process view of nature. Multifunctional integration and the role of the construction agent

    Get PDF
This is the first of two linked articles which draw s on emerging understanding in the field of biology and seeks to communicate it to those of construction, engineering and design. Its insight is that nature 'works' at the process level, where neither function nor form are distinctions, and materialisation is both the act of negotiating limited resource and encoding matter as 'memory', to sustain and integrate processes through time. It explores how biological agents derive work by creating 'interfaces' between adjacent locations as membranes, through feedback. Through the tension between simultaneous aggregation and disaggregation of matter by agents with opposing objectives, many functions are integrated into an interface as it unfolds. Significantly, biological agents induce flow and counterflow conditions within biological interfaces, by inducing phase transition responses in the matte r or energy passing through them, driving steep gradients from weak potentials (i.e. shorter distances and larger surfaces). As with biological agents, computing, programming and, increasingly digital sensor and effector technologies share the same 'agency' and are thus convergent

Paying for Performance at the Plate: An Investigation of Variable Pay Systems in Major League Baseball

    Get PDF
Previous empirical research on variable pay systems have suggested that possible gains can come from paying for performance, but highlight the difficulty firms face in measuring performance. Using contracts signed in Major League Baseball’s free agent market, I find that over the 2010-2014 period, teams utilized variable pay schemes with players that were more productive or signaled greater risk, either in their contract terms or via overspecialization. However, not all forms of risk signaling were correlated with greater use of performance incentives, including age and proxies for injury history. These findings have significant implications for labor practices more broadly, as the high-information environment of Major League Baseball can shed light on how principals behave when performance measurement costs are effectively eliminated

Synthesis and design of integrated reaction-separation systems with complex configurations and rigorous models

Chemical engineering, and specially process design, synthesis and intensification, are well positioned to support both society and industry in overcoming present global challenges of environment degradation, energy supply, water scarcity and food supply. These challenges have been translated into industrial problems that involve the design of chemical processes with decreased water and energy consumption, and improved efficiencies. In this context the present study focuses on the simultaneous synthesis and design of reaction-separation systems including complex configuration distillation columns and using rigorous models. The study is considered a further step in this research area, as previous works have usually focused on the synthesis of sub-networks and have used shortcut models. Additionally, among complex configuration, thermally coupled distillation columns are reported to present significant savings in terms of the total annualised cost of the system. Among the available approaches to synthesis and design, a superstructure optimisation approach is used. The procedure involves the construction of a superstructure that includes a reaction superstructure, taken from Ma et al. (Ma et al. 2019) and a separation superstructure, proposed by Sargent and Gaminibandara (Sargent and K. Gaminibandara 1976). The modelling is performed using generalised disjunctive programming (GDP) to produce a logic-based model. This model is then reformulated into a mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) optimisation problem, where the objective is to minimise the total annualised cost of the process. For the reformulation convex hull and bypass efficiency methods are used. A modified version of the solving strategy presented by Ma et al. (Ma et al. 2019) is used, which involves using the solver SBB in General Algebraic Modelling System (GAMS). The proposed framework is applied to a case study previously addressed by Zhang et al. (Zhang et al. 2018) and Ma et al. (Ma et al. 2019). Economic models and assumptions made in those studies are maintained in order to evaluate the benefits of including complex configuration columns in the design possibilities. Results present a flowsheet with one PFR reactor and complex configuration distillation columns that are partially thermally coupled. The total annualised cost of the process is 5.85x105 $/yr, which is 6.3% and 4.7% less than the value achieved by Zhang et al. (Zhang et al. 2018)and Ma et al., respectively. Results show that it is both possible and beneficial to consider complex configuration distillation columns, including thermally coupled ones, in the simultaneous synthesis and design of reaction-separation systems using rigorous models.Chevening AwardsAgencia Nacional de Investigación e Innovació

What is the maximum rate at which entropy of a string can increase?

According to Susskind, a string falling toward a black hole spreads exponentially over the stretched horizon due to repulsive interactions of the string bits. In this paper such a string is modeled as a self-avoiding walk and the string entropy is found. It is shown that the rate at which information/entropy contained in the string spreads is the maximum rate allowed by quantum theory. The maximum rate at which the black hole entropy can increase when a string falls into a black hole is also discussed.Comment: 11 pages, no figures; formulas (18), (20) are corrected (the quantum constant is added), a point concerning a relation between the Hawking and Hagedorn temperatures is corrected, conclusions unchanged; accepted by Physical Review D for publicatio

A new microscopic nucleon-nucleon interaction derived from relativistic mean field theory

A new microscopic nucleon-nucleon (NN) interaction has been derived for the first time from the popular relativistic mean field theory (RMFT) Lagrangian. The NN interaction so obtained remarkably relate to the inbuilt fundamental parameters of RMFT. Furthermore, by folding it with the RMFT-densities of cluster and daughter nuclei to obtain the optical potential, it's application is also examined to study the exotic cluster radioactive decays, and results obtained found comparable with the successfully used M3Y phenomenological effective NN interactions. The presently derived NN-interaction can also be used to calculate a number of other nuclear observables.Comment: 4 Pages 2 Figure

Asymptotic Limits and Sum Rules for Gauge Field Propagators

    Get PDF
For gauge field propagators, the asymptotic behavior is obtained in all directions of the complex k2k^2-plane, and for general, linear, covariant gauges. Asymptotically free theories are considered. Except for coefficients, the functional form of the leading asymptotic terms is gauge-independent. Exponents are determined exactly by one-loop expressions. Sum rules are derived, which generalize the superconvergence relations obtained in the Landau gauge. The subject matter of Social Research is the most numerous course of the North Litoral University Center (CENUR LN) and has significant levels of lag and disengagement. The CAMI project sought to develop an alternative proposal of semi-face and concentrated education that supposes an option to reduce the negative effects of the massive first-year careers of Social Sciences (Cc.Ss.) and the Initial Cycle of the Social Area (CIOAS), in this matter considered critical. The proposal aspired to generate a sustainable tool in the CENUR LN, forming a pilot so that the students who had already studied the subject, could recur at in exceptional conditions. The reduction of mass, remote work, the use of prior knowledge as a trigger for learning and the concentrated form of dictation were the main differences that were hypothesized that would have a positive effect on academic results. This article presents the academic results of the CAMI students and analyzes the success of the experience in the light of the qualitative and quantitative evaluation that was made of the same.Facultad de Humanidades y Ciencias de la Educació
