A Workshop Example of Basic Design Education in Interior Architecture

The “Basic Design” is one of the common introductory courses in design disciplines. It has great importance in interior architecture education as it forms the basis of design practice. Education that proceeds through abstract concepts creates difficulties for students to internalize this course. To avoid these difficulties, learning by doing is of great importance. The learning-by-doing approach was carried out in the form of a workshop within the scope of the “Basic Design 1” course of the Department of Interior Architecture at Konya Technical University in the fall semester of the 2022-2023 academic year. Students were asked to produce three-dimensional designs using basic design principles and elements. The class was divided into groups of eight people and studies were carried out with a workshop coordinator in each group. The duration of the workshop was planned as four weeks. During the workshop, students learned to use materials and colors, to design an original composition. At the end of the workshop, students learned to embody the abstract concepts they learned during the year by creating a composition that considers functionality and aesthetics. In order to evaluate the efficiency of the workshop, a survey study was carried out after the course period ended. As a result, it has been seen that the intelligibility of Basic Design 1, which is a course taught through abstract concepts, has increased thanks to the workshop

Recent developments in the immunopathology of COVID-19

There has been an important change in the clinical characteristics and immune profile of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients during the pandemic thanks to the extensive vaccination programs. Here, we highlight recent studies on COVID-19, from the clinical and immunological characteristics to the protective and risk factors for severity and mortality of COVID-19. The efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccines and potential allergic reactions after administration are also discussed. The occurrence of new variants of concerns such as Omicron BA.2, BA.4, and BA.5 and the global administration of COVID-19 vaccines have changed the clinical scenario of COVID-19. Multisystem inflammatory syndrome in children (MIS-C) may cause severe and heterogeneous disease but with a lower mortality rate. Perturbations in immunity of T cells, B cells, and mast cells, as well as autoantibodies and metabolic reprogramming may contribute to the long-term symptoms of COVID-19. There is conflicting evidence about whether atopic diseases, such as allergic asthma and rhinitis, are associated with a lower susceptibility and better outcomes of COVID-19. At the beginning of pandemic, the European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) developed guidelines that provided timely information for the management of allergic diseases and preventive measures to reduce transmission in the allergic clinics. The global distribution of COVID-19 vaccines and emerging severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants with reduced pathogenic potential dramatically decreased the morbidity, severity, and mortality of COVID-19. Nevertheless, breakthrough infection remains a challenge for disease control. Hypersensitivity reactions (HSR) to COVID-19 vaccines are low compared to other vaccines, and these were addressed in EAACI statements that provided indications for the management of allergic reactions, including anaphylaxis to COVID-19 vaccines. We have gained a depth knowledge and experience in the over 2 years since the start of the pandemic, and yet a full eradication of SARS-CoV-2 is not on the horizon. Novel strategies are warranted to prevent severe disease in high-risk groups, the development of MIS-C and long COVID-19

How is Europe positioned for a re-emergence of Schmallenberg virus?

    Get PDF
The Schmallenberg virus (SBV) caused a large scale epidemic in Europe from 2011–2013 infecting ruminants and causing fetal deformities after infection of pregnant animals. The main impacts of the virus were financial losses due to animal, meat and semen trade restrictions. Even though effective vaccines were produced, their uptake was never high. This along with the subsequent decline in new SBV infections and natural replacement of previously exposed livestock has resulted in a drop in the number of protected animals. Recent surveillance has found a large population of naïve animals currently present in Europe and the virus circulating at a low level. These changes in animal status in combination with favourable conditions for the insect vectors may open the door to the re-emergence of the virus and another large-scale outbreak in Europe. This review details the potential and preparedness for SBV re-emergence in Europe, discusses possible co-ordinated sentinel monitoring programmes both for ruminant seroconversion and the presence of virus in the insect vectors and provides an overview of the economic impact associated with diagnosis, control and the effect of non-vaccination

Bu çalışmada, Türk mûsikîsinin XVIII. yüzyılda yaşamış önemli bestecilerinden Hatîbzâde Osmân Efendiznin Rast makâmında bestelediği 15 makâm ve 16 usûlü ihtiva eden Kâr-ı Nâtık formundaki eseri, güfte ve beste özellikleri yönünden incelemeye alınmıştır. Klâsik Türk Mûsikîsi öğretimi açısından büyük önem taşıdığına inandığımız güftesi Nevres-i Kadîmze ait bu Kâr-ı Nâtıkzın incelenmesinden önce, öncelikle eserin formu, güftekârı ve bestekârı hakkında bilgi verilmiş, daha sonra güftenin günümüz Türkçesine aktarımı ve izahı yapılmıştır. Akabinde eserin eldeki nüshalarına bağlı kalınarak, bestekârın Kâr-ı Nâtıkzta yer verdiği makâm ve usûller incelemeye tâbi tutulmuştur. Makâmlar incelenirken öncelikle bestekârla aynı dönemde yaşamış olan Kantemiroğluznun makâm tariflerine değinilmiş, daha sonra bestekârın kendine özgü makâm anlayışları vurgulanmaya çalışılmış, eserin Remel bahrinin fâzilâtün fâzilâtün fâzilâtin fâzilün vezninde yazılmış güftesinde yer alan tefzîle ve hecelerin usûllere dağılımları her usûl için oluşturulan şablonlarda ayrı ayrı gösterilmiş ve değerlendirilmeleri yapılmıştır.İncelemeler esnâsında oluşan düşünce ve yorumlar dipnotlarda ve sonuç bölümünde belirtilmiştir. In this study, the work composed in the Rast makâm and the Kâr-ı Nâtık form including 15 makams and 16 usûls (rhythmic patterns), by Hatîbzâde Osmân Efendi who was one of the important composers of the 18th century, was analysed in terms of lyrics and composition features. For this Kâr-ı Nâtık which we believe is very significant in terms of Classical Turkish Music education, initially the lyrics that belong to Nevres-i Kadîm were examined, then in the work carried out from the copies of the work that could be reached, the workzs form features were studied with the makams and usûls (rhythmic patterns) that the composer included in the Kâr-ı Nâtık.In the analysis of the makâms, distinctive makâm perceptions and melodic structures, in line with the period that the composer lived in were tried to be emphasised; the distribution of tefzîles and syllables taking place in the lyrics written in the fâzilâtün fâzilâtün fâzilâtin fâzilün meter of Remel bahri of the work were shown separately in the templates formed for every single usûl (rhythmic patterns). Subsequently, the workzs form (type and style) features were analysed in comparison with other Kâr-ı Nâtıks. The thoughts and comments arisen during the analysis are stated in the footnotes and the conclusion
