Browsing lawns? Responses of Acacia nigrescens to ungulate browsing in an African savanna
We measured browsing-induced responses of Acacia trees to investigate browsing lawns as an analogy to grazing lawns in a semiarid eutrophic African savanna. During the two-year field study, we measured plant tolerance, resistance, and phenological traits, while comparing variation in leaf nitrogen and specific leaf area (SLA) across stands of Acacia nigrescens, Miller, that had experienced markedly different histories of attack from large herbivores. Trees in heavily browsed stands developed (1) tolerance traits such as high regrowth abilities in shoots and leaves, high annual branch growth rates, extensive tree branching and evidence of internal N translocation, and (2) resistance traits such as close thorn spacing. However, phenological escape responses were weak even in heavily browsed stands. Overall, browsing strongly affected plant morpho-functional traits and decreased both the number of trees carrying pods and the number of pods per tree in heavily browsed stands. Hence, there is experimental evidence that tolerance and resistance traits may occur simultaneously at heavily browsed sites, but this comes at the expense of reproductive success. Such tolerance and resistance traits may coexist if browsers trigger and maintain a positive feedback loop in which trees are continually investing in regrowth (tolerance), and if the plant\u27s physical defenses (resistance) are not nutritionally costly and are long-lived. Our results confirm that chronic browsing by ungulates can maintain A. nigrescens trees in a hedged state that is analogous to a grazing lawn. Further research is needed to fully understand the long-term effects of chronic browsing on reproduction within such tree populations, as well as the overall effects on nutrient cycling at the ecosystem level

Quantifying Long-Term Urban Grassland Dynamics: Biotic Homogenization and Extinction Debts
Sustainable urban nature conservation calls for a rethinking of conventional approaches. Traditionally, conservationists have not incorporated the history of the landscape in management strategies. This study shows that extant vegetation patterns are correlated to past landscapes indicating potential extinction debts. We calculated urban landscape measures for seven time periods (1938–2019) and correlated it to three vegetation sampling events (1995, 2012, 2019) using GLM models. We also tested whether urban vegetation was homogenizing. Our results indicated that urban vegetation in our study area is not currently homogenizing but that indigenous forb species richness is declining significantly. Furthermore, long-term studies are essential as the time lags identified for different vegetation sampling periods changed as well as the drivers best predicting these changes. Understanding these dynamics are critical to ensuring sustainable conservation of urban vegetation for future citizens
Oxygen Consumption in South African Sauvignon Blanc Wines: Role of Glutathione, Sulphur Dioxide and Certain Phenolics
The aim of this research was to investigate the interaction between sulphur dioxide, glutathione (GSH) and certain phenols in the presence of oxygen in a synthetic wine and in clarified Sauvignon blanc wine. In this study, the clarified wine, from which most of the phenols had been removed, was compared to synthetic wine solution, with both mediums being enriched with caffeic acid to investigate the effect of different levels of sulphur dioxide and GSH on oxygen consumption. Moreover, thirteen young South African Sauvignon blanc wines with different levels of sulphur dioxide were oxygenated, and the oxygen consumption and phenolic and colour changes were monitored over time. The results show that oxygen consumption was influenced greatly by the presence of sulphur dioxide and, to a lesser extent, by the presence of GSH, with both compounds decreasing during the course of the experiment. During oxidation, an increase was observed in glutathionyl caffeic acid, as well as in oxidised glutathione (GSSG); however, this did not coincide with the percentage decrease in GSH. Oxidation further led to an increase in absorbance measurements at 420 and 440 nm (yellow-orange colour), which were reduced by the presence of SO2. A large variation was also observed in the oxygen consumption of the young wines, with this rate increasing with an increase in SO2 concentration. Positive correlations were also observed between oxygen, SO2, GSH and Cu concentrations, which were again negatively correlated with absorbance at 420 and 440 nm and GSSG concentrations
The price-to-book effect on the JSE: Valuation disparities and subsequent performance
The purpose of this study was to determine whether the relative out- or underperformance of a value portfolio versus a growth portfolio can be anticipated in advance by comparing a valuation difference multiple with the subsequent fiveyear relative performance of the value and growth portfolios. The valuation difference multiple was calculated as the median price-to-book value (P/B) ratio of the growth portfolio divided by the median P/B ratio of the value portfolio. Using monthly data for the period 1991 to 2011, this study found that in most instances the higher the valuation difference multiple, the higher the outperformance of the value portfolio over the subsequent five-year period, as compared to the growth portfolio

WhatsApp-propriate? A retrospective content analysis of WhatsApp use and potential breaches in confidentiality among a team of doctors at a district hospital, South Africa
Background. There has been a steady increase in the use of electronic media and instant messaging among healthcare professionals, where it has been almost universally adopted in the workplace. The use of WhatsApp and its perceived benefits in healthcare have been extensively studied; however, there are concerns regarding the potential for ethical breaches in confidentiality through shared electronic patient information.Objectives. To identify the usage characteristics and incidence of shared patient information with WhatsApp use in a team of medical doctors in an unobserved and unregulated setting.Methods. We conducted a retrospective cross-sectional content analysis of WhatsApp messages (n=3 340) among a team of 20 doctors in a South African district hospital over 6 months. All messages found within this time period were allocated unique identifiers. The text and image messages were thematically grouped into four categories, i.e. clinical care, resource allocation, social and administrative. Messages that contained patient-identifying information were included in the analysis.Results. Of a total of 3 340 messages sent, 220 (6.6%) contained patient-identifying information. Of these, 109 (3.3%) contained non-anonymised patient information, while in 111 (3.3%) messages, the information was anonymised. The likelihood of sharing patient identifiers was proportionally much higher in shared images (odds ratio (OR) 5.1; 95% confidence interval (CI) 3.2 - 8.2; p<0.0001) compared with text messages, and in messages that related to clinical care (OR 9.3; 95% CI 2.2 - 38.8; p=0.0023) compared with those sent for resource allocation, and social or administrative purposes.Conclusions. Non-anonymised patient identifiers were found in 3.3% of messages, constituting the potential for breaching patient confidentiality. While WhatsApp groups have significant utility in co-ordinating aspects of clinical care, resource allocation, as well as social and administrative functions, the safe use of WhatsApp should be promoted to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained
Underrecognition and undertreatment of asthma in Cape Town primary school children
Background. In view of the high local prevalence of asthma, the extent of recognition and appropriate managementof childhood asthma was studied in a large suburban area of Cape Town.Design. Cross-sectional study based on random community sample of schools.Method. 1955 parents of sub B pupils from 16 schools completed a questionnaire, followed by: (f) an interview of parents of 348 symptomatic children; and (if) bronchial responsiveness testing on 254 children. the final case group consisted of 242 children with reported asthma or multiple asthma symptoms on both questionnaires. Children in whom asthma was acknowledged were compared with those in whom it was not.Results. Overall, any past or current ('ever') asthma was acknowledged by respondents in only 53% of the children, and current asthma in only 37.1%. While most children had received treatment in the previous 12 months, 66.1% of therecognised group were on current treatment (23.2% on daily treatment), compared with 37% of the unrecognised group (3% daily). Salbutamol and theophylline syrups were the most common types of medication, while inhalers and antiinflammatory medications were underused. Only a minority of parents reported the child ever having used a peak flow meter, or volunteered knowledge of preventive measures. Current treatment, and to a lesser degree recognition of asthma by parents, were more common among children on medical aid and of higher socio-eonomic status.Conclusions. These findings suggest that ways need to be found: (i) to increase the use of current asthma treatment guidelines by practitioners; (ii) to provide access to comprehensive care by children not on medical aid; and (iii) to improve education of parents in home management measures such as severity assessment and avoidance of smoking, allergen and dietary triggers
