    FINANCIAMENTOS EXTERNOS PARA O DESENVOLVIMENTO REGIONAL:: O CASO DO APL MOVELEIRO DA SERRA GAÚCHA

    International activity depends on human, productive, technological and financial resources, as well as on the competitiveness of companies and economic sectors.In view of that, there are international organizations that grant funding to stimulate the economic and social development of sectors. This is the case of the Serra Gaúcha’s furniture sector, which from 2012 to 2016, obtained resources from the World Bank Group. From this, this study aimed to analyze the importance of international funding granted by the World Bank, through the Program of Support for Economic and Social Development of Rio Grande do Sul for regional development and the Serra Gaúcha’s furniture cluster. To this end, it sought to identify the transfer conditions, the projects developed from such funding, their characteristics, and their importance in the perception of the cluster manager. In methodological terms, this research has a qualitative nature through the documental analysis of actions developed and interviews with representatives of the cluster management and the government of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. It was concluded that the funding stimulated the union of companies with sectoral actors linked to education and research, causing benefits with emphasis on knowledge sharing, during the realization of social, economic and environmental actions.Las operaciones internacionales dependen de los recursos humanos, productivos, tecnológicos y financieros, además de la competitividad de las empresas y sectores económicos. Ante esto, existen organismos internacionales que conceden financiamiento para estimular el desarrollo económico y social de los sectores. Este es el caso del sector de muebles en Serra Gaúcha, que de 2012 a 2016 obtuvo recursos del Grupo Banco Mundial. A partir de eso, este estudio trató de analizar la importancia del financiamiento internacional concedido por el Banco Mundial, a través del Programa de Apoyo al Desarrollo Económico y Social de Rio Grande do Sul para el desarrollo regional y el APL Mueble de la Serra Gaúcha. Para eso, se buscó identificar las condiciones de la transferencia, los proyectos desarrollados a partir de dicha financiación, sus características y su importancia en la percepción del órgano gestor. En términos metodológicos, esta investigación tiene carácter cualitativo a través del análisis documental de las acciones desarrolladas y de entrevistas con representantes del órgano gestor de la APL y del Gobierno del Estado de RS. Se concluye que el financiamiento incentivó la unión de empresas con actores sectoriales vinculados a la enseñanza y la investigación, provocando puntos positivos con énfasis en el intercambio de conocimientos, en la realización de acciones sociales, económicas y ambientales.A atuação internacional depende de recursos humanos, produtivos, tecnológicos e financeiros, além da competitividade de empresas e setores econômicos.     Fisetin protects against cardiac cell death through reduction of ROS production and caspases activity

    Myocardial infarction (MI) is a leading cause of death worldwide. Reperfusion is considered as an optimal therapy following cardiac ischemia. However, the promotion of a rapid elevation of O2 levels in ischemic cells produces high amounts of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leading to myocardial tissue injury. This phenomenon is called ischemia reperfusion injury (IRI). We aimed at identifying new and effective compounds to treat MI and minimize IRI. We previously studied heart regeneration following myocardial injury in zebrafish and described each step of the regeneration process, from the day of injury until complete recovery, in terms of transcriptional responses. Here, we mined the data and performed a deep in silico analysis to identify drugs highly likely to induce cardiac regeneration. Fisetin was identified as the top candidate. We validated its effects in an in vitro model of MI/IRI in mammalian cardiac cells. Fisetin enhances viability of rat cardiomyocytes following hypoxia/starvation - reoxygenation. It inhibits apoptosis, decreases ROS generation and caspase activation and protects from DNA damage. Interestingly, fisetin also activates genes involved in cell proliferation. Fisetin is thus a highly promising candidate drug with clinical potential to protect from ischemic damage following MI and to overcome IRI.This work was supported by FNR, the Luxembourg National Research Fund, FNR-CORE INFUSED project.     Theory of continuum percolation III. Low density expansion

    We use a previously introduced mapping between the continuum percolation model and the Potts fluid (a system of interacting s-states spins which are free to move in the continuum) to derive the low density expansion of the pair connectedness and the mean cluster size. We prove that given an adequate identification of functions, the result is equivalent to the density expansion derived from a completely different point of view by Coniglio et al. [J. Phys A 10, 1123 (1977)] to describe physical clustering in a gas. We then apply our expansion to a system of hypercubes with a hard core interaction. The calculated critical density is within approximately 5% of the results of simulations, and is thus much more precise than previous theoretical results which were based on integral equations. We suggest that this is because integral equations smooth out overly the partition function (i.e., they describe predominantly its analytical part), while our method targets instead the part which describes the phase transition (i.e., the singular part).Comment: 42 pages, Revtex, includes 5 EncapsulatedPostscript figures, submitted to Phys Rev

    Quantifying within-group variation in sociality—covariation among metrics and patterns across primate groups and species

    It has long been recognized that the patterning of social interactions within a group can give rise to a social structure that holds very different places for different individuals. Such within-group variation in sociality correlates with fitness proxies in fish, birds, and mammals. Broader integration of this research has been hampered by the lack of agreement on how to integrate information from a plethora of dyadic interactions into individual-level metrics. As a step towards standardization, we collected comparative data on affinitive and affiliative interactions from multiple groups each of five species of primates to assess whether the same aspects of sociality are measured by different metrics and indices. We calculated 16 different sociality metrics used in previous research and thought to represent three different sociality concepts. We assessed covariation of metrics within groups and then summarized covariation patterns across all 15 study groups, which varied in size from 5 to 41 adults. With some methodological and conceptual caveats, we found that the number of weak ties individuals formed within their groups represented a dimension of sociality that was largely independent from the overall number of ties as well as from the number and strength of the strong ties they formed. Metrics quantifying indirect connectedness exhibited strong covariation with strong tie metrics and thus failed to capture a third aspect of sociality. Future research linking affiliation and affinity to fitness or other individual level outcomes should quantify inter-individual variation in three aspects: the overall number of ties, the number of weak ties, and the number or strength of strong ties individuals form, after taking into account effects of social network density. Significance statement: In recent years, long-term studies of individually known animals have revealed strong correlations between individual social bonds and social integration, on the one hand, and reproductive success and survival on the other hand, suggesting strong natural selection on affiliative and affinitive behavior within groups. It proved difficult to generalize from these studies because they all measured sociality in slightly different ways. Analyzing covariation between 16 previously used metrics identified only three rather independent dimensions of variation. Thus, different studies have tapped into the same biological phenomenon. How individuals are weakly connected within their group needs further attention.Peer Reviewe

    Common carotid intima media thickness and ankle-brachial pressure index correlate with local but not global atheroma burden:a cross sectional study using whole body magnetic resonance angiography

    Common carotid intima media thickness (CIMT) and ankle brachial pressure index (ABPI) are used as surrogate marker of atherosclerosis, and have been shown to correlate with arterial stiffness, however their correlation with global atherosclerotic burden has not been previously assessed. We compare CIMT and ABPI with atheroma burden as measured by whole body magnetic resonance angiography (WB-MRA).50 patients with symptomatic peripheral arterial disease were recruited. CIMT was measured using ultrasound while rest and exercise ABPI were performed. WB-MRA was performed in a 1.5T MRI scanner using 4 volume acquisitions with a divided dose of intravenous gadolinium gadoterate meglumine (Dotarem, Guerbet, FR). The WB-MRA data was divided into 31 anatomical arterial segments with each scored according to degree of luminal narrowing: 0 = normal, 1 = <50%, 2 = 50-70%, 3 = 70-99%, 4 = vessel occlusion. The segment scores were summed and from this a standardized atheroma score was calculated.The atherosclerotic burden was high with a standardised atheroma score of 39.5±11. Common CIMT showed a positive correlation with the whole body atheroma score (β 0.32, p = 0.045), however this was due to its strong correlation with the neck and thoracic segments (β 0.42 p = 0.01) with no correlation with the rest of the body. ABPI correlated with the whole body atheroma score (β -0.39, p = 0.012), which was due to a strong correlation with the ilio-femoral vessels with no correlation with the thoracic or neck vessels. On multiple linear regression, no correlation between CIMT and global atheroma burden was present (β 0.13 p = 0.45), while the correlation between ABPI and atheroma burden persisted (β -0.45 p = 0.005).ABPI but not CIMT correlates with global atheroma burden as measured by whole body contrast enhanced magnetic resonance angiography in a population with symptomatic peripheral arterial disease. However this is primarily due to a strong correlation with ilio-femoral atheroma burden

    The Atacama Cosmology Telescope: Two-Season ACTPol Spectra and Parameters

    We present the temperature and polarization angular power spectra measured by the Atacama Cosmology Telescope Polarimeter (ACTPol). We analyze night-time data collected during 2013-14 using two detector arrays at 149 GHz, from 548 deg2^2 of sky on the celestial equator. We use these spectra, and the spectra measured with the MBAC camera on ACT from 2008-10, in combination with Planck and WMAP data to estimate cosmological parameters from the temperature, polarization, and temperature-polarization cross-correlations. We find the new ACTPol data to be consistent with the LCDM model. The ACTPol temperature-polarization cross-spectrum now provides stronger constraints on multiple parameters than the ACTPol temperature spectrum, including the baryon density, the acoustic peak angular scale, and the derived Hubble constant. Adding the new data to planck temperature data tightens the limits on damping tail parameters, for example reducing the joint uncertainty on the number of neutrino species and the primordial helium fraction by 20%.Comment: 23 pages, 25 figure

    FEL stochastic spectroscopy revealing silicon bond softening dynamics

    Time-resolved X-ray Emission/Absorption Spectroscopy (Tr-XES/XAS) is an informative experimental tool sensitive to electronic dynamics in materials, widely exploited in diverse research fields. Typically, Tr-XES/XAS requires X-ray pulses with both a narrow bandwidth and sub-picosecond pulse duration, a combination that in principle finds its optimum with Fourier transform-limited pulses. In this work, we explore an alternative xperimental approach, capable of simultaneously retrieving information about unoccupied (XAS) and occupied (XES) states from the stochastic fluctuations of broadband extreme ultraviolet pulses of a free-electron laser. We used this method, in combination with singular value decomposition and Tikhonov regularization procedures, to determine the XAS/XES response from a crystalline silicon sample at the L2,3-edge, with an energy resolution of a few tens of meV. Finally, we combined this spectroscopic method with a pump-probe approach to measure structural and electronic dynamics of a silicon membrane. Tr-XAS/XES data obtained after photoexcitation with an optical laser pulse at 390 nm allowed us to observe perturbations of the band structure, which are compatible with the formation of the predicted precursor state of a non-thermal solid-liquid phase transition associated with a bond softening phenomenon

    Idiopathic central precocious puberty in girls: presentation factors

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>It is sometimes difficult to distinguish between premature thelarche and precocious puberty in girls who develop breasts before the age of 8 years. We evaluated the frequencies of the signs associated with breast development and the factors influencing the presentation of girls with idiopathic central precocious puberty (CPP).</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>353 girls monitored 0.9 ± 0.7 year after the onset of CPP.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The age at CPP was < 3 years in 2%, 3–7 years in 38% and 7–8 years in 60% of cases. Pubic hair was present in 67%, growth rate greater than 2 SDS in 46% and bone age advance greater than 2 years in 33% of cases. Breast development was clinically isolated in 70 (20%) cases. However, only 31 of these (8.8% of the population) had a prepubertal length uterus and gonadotropin responses to gonadotropin releasing hormone and plasma estradiol. The clinical picture of CPP became complete during the year following the initial evaluation.</p> <p>25% of cases were obese. The increase in weight during the previous year (3.7 ± 1.4 kg) and body mass index were positively correlated with the statural growth and bone age advance (P < 0.0001).</p> <p>There was no relationship between the clinical-biological presentation and the age at puberty, the interval between the onset of puberty and evaluation, or the presence of familial CPP.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>The variation in presentation of girls with CPP does not depend on their age, interval between the onset and evaluation, or familial factors. This suggests that there are degrees of hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian activation that are not explained by these factors.</p

    Early-onset parkinsonism caused by alpha-synuclein gene triplication: Clinical and genetic findings in a novel family

    Introduction: Triplications of SNCA, the gene encoding for α-synuclein, cause a very rare Mendelian form of early-onset parkinsonism combined with cognitive and autonomic dysfunctions. Only six families with SNCA triplications have been described so far, limiting our knowledge of the associated phenotype. In this study, we report clinical and genetic findings in a new Italian family with SNCA triplication. Methods: The patients' phenotype was assessed by neurological examination, neuropsychological tests, and brain imaging (MRI and SPECT-DaTSCAN). For the genetic investigation, we used three independent techniques: genome-wide SNP microarrays, fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH), and multiplex ligation-dependent probe amplification (MLPA). Results: Genetic studies documented the presence of four copies of the SNCA gene in the affected family members. FISH experiments and the segregation in the family were consistent with a heterozygous triplication of the SNCA locus. The patients carrying the SNCA triplication developed early-onset parkinsonism combined with depression, behavior disturbances, sleep disorders, and cognitive decline; marked autonomic dysfunctions were not observed. Brain imaging revealed fronto-parietal atrophy and a severe striatal dopaminergic deficit. Conclusion: The identification of this novel family contributes to the genetic and clinical characterization of this rare form.
