    BSM physics at the LHeC and the FCC-he

    Electron-proton (e-p) colliders are an ideal laboratory to study common features of electron and quarks with production via electroweak bosons, leptoquarks, multi-jet final states and very forward physics, due to their impressive pseudorapidity coverage. In addition to these physics cases, there exist a broad Beyond the Standard Model (BSM) program aimed at exploring the capabilities of the LHeC [1] and FCC-he [2] for several New Physics scenarios. Although their centre-of-mass energy is down with respect to a pp collider by a factor of √Ep/Ee ∼ 10 (30) for the LHeC (FCC-he), they can be an invaluable tool to characterize BSM physics hints at ee and pp machines. The aim of this talk is to provide, on behalf of the BSM e-p Working Group, an overview of the aforementioned BSM program, by briefly summarizing the existing studies and reporting on the most recent progress. We expect that the ample scope in terms of NP models to be tested would enhance the synergies between the BSM and e-p communities

    Assessing higher levels of learning through real-life problems in engineering mathematics

    This paper discusses the design of engineering mathematics assessment that encourages learning beyond algorithmic recall. Our approach is based on the MATH (mathematical assessment task hierarchy) taxonomy. We propose using mathematics as a tool to analyse relatable problems and produce clear engineering deliverables to ensure that academic knowledge is translated to real-life situations. Creating engineering scenarios was instrumental in fostering active engagement, enquiry, creativity and reducing opportunities for academic misconduct in our first-year engineering mathematics assessments. An example of an exam question covering the topics of calculus, linear algebra, and dimensional analysis is given to illustrate the concepts discussed. Qualitative feedback from 203 students on an assessment paper containing the question shown herein is also included. Our data shows that most students had little to no previous exposure to real-world questions and that most of their time engaging with the assessment was spent critically analysing the problems. In addition, student feedback showed that contextual assessment is perceived as more challenging and exciting than pure mathematics problems and that students believe contextual assessment adds value to their education

    Echo-Mapping of Swift J1753.5-0127

    We present two epochs of coordinated X-ray-optical timing observations of the black hole candidate Swift J1753.5-0127 during its 2005 outburst. The first epoch in July occurred at outburst peak. Two consecutive nights of observations using the McDonald Observatory Argos camera with the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer show a consistent correlation with an immediate response and an extended tail lasting ~5s. The properties of the variability and the correlation are consistent with thermal reprocessing in an accretion disk. The shortness of the lag suggests a short orbital period consistent with that recently claimed. The second epoch in August used the VLT FORS2 HIT mode again in conjunction with RXTE. Again a repeatable correlation is seen between two independent subsets of the data. In this case, though, the cross-correlation function has an unusual structure comprising a dip followed by a double-peak. We suggest that this may be equivalent to the dip plus single peak structure seen by Kanbach et al. (2001) in XTE J1118+480 and attributed there to synchrotron emission; a similar structure was seen during later activity of Swift J1753.5-0127 by Durant et al.     Stimulated Brillouin scattering by surface acoustic waves in lithium niobate waveguides

    We numerically demonstrate that Lithium Niobate on Insulator (LNOI) waveguides may support confined short-wavelength surface acoustic waves that interact strongly with optical fields through backward stimulated Brillouin scattering in both ZZ and XX-cut orientation. We conduct fully anisotropic simulations that consider not only moving boundary and photoelastic forces, but also roto-optic forces for the Brillouin interaction. Our results indicate that photoelasticity dominates the Brillouin gain and can reach as high as GB/QmG_{B}/Q_{m} = 0.43 W−1^{-1}m−1^{-1} in standard ridge waveguide
