ITER breeding blanket design
A breeding blanket design has been developed for ITER to provide the necessary tritium fuel to achieve the technical objectives of the Enhanced Performance Phase. It uses a ceramic breeder and water coolant for compatibility with the ITER machine design of the Basic Performance Phase. Lithium zirconate and lithium oxide am the selected ceramic breeders based on the current data base. Enriched lithium and beryllium neutron multiplier are used for both breeders. Both forms of beryllium material, blocks and pebbles are used at different blanket locations based on thermo-mechanical considerations and beryllium thickness requirements. Type 316LN austenitic steel is used as structural material similar to the shielding blanket. Design issues and required R&D data are identified during the development of the design
Thermal diffusivity and Biot number: a new experimental method
A new simple method is presented for measuring thermal diffusivity and Biot number in cylindrical samples made of relatively highly conducting materials, subjected to laminar air flow. The basic idea is a heat source in the middle section of the sample, acting also as a thermocouple; only one additional temperature sensor at the cylinder basis is required to give all information, without requiring any hypothesis about the effective time dependence of the heat source
Extra- and intra-ovarian factors in polycystic ovary syndrome: impact on oocyte maturation and embryo developmental competence
background: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a common metabolic dysfunction and heterogeneous endocrine disorder in women of reproductive age. Although patients with PCOS are typically characterized by increased numbers of oocytes retrieved during IVF, they are often of poor quality, leading to lower fertilization, cleavage and implantation rates, and a higher miscarriage rate. methods: For this review, we searched the database MEDLINE (1950 to January 2010) and Google for all full texts and/or abstract articles published in English with content related to oocyte maturation and embryo developmental competence. results: The search showed that alteration of many factors may directly or indirectly impair the competence of maturating oocytes through endocrine and local paracrine/autocrine actions, resulting in a lower pregnancy rate in patients with PCOS. The extra-ovarian factors identified included gonadotrophins, hyperandrogenemia and hyperinsulinemia, although intra-ovarian factors included members of the epidermal, fibroblast, insulin-like and neurotrophin families of growth factors, as well as the cytokines. conclusions: Any abnormality in the extra- and/or intra-ovarian factors may negatively affect the granulosa cell-oocyte interaction, oocyte maturation and potential embryonic developmental competence, contributing to unsuccessful outcomes for patients with PCOS who are undergoing assisted reproduction.Obstetrics & GynecologyReproductive BiologySCI(E)PubMed49REVIEW117-331
Investigation of the Efficacy of a <i>Listeria monocytogenes</i> Biosensor Using Chicken Broth Samples
Foodborne pathogens are microbes present in food that cause serious illness when the contaminated food is consumed. Among these pathogens, Listeria monocytogenes is one of the most serious bacterial pathogens, and causes severe illness. The techniques currently used for L. monocytogenes detection are based on common molecular biology tools that are not easy to implement for field use in food production and distribution facilities. This work focuses on the efficacy of an electrochemical biosensor in detecting L. monocytogenes in chicken broth. The sensor is based on a nanostructured electrode modified with a bacteriophage as a bioreceptor which selectively detects L. monocytogenes using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. The biosensing platform was able to reach a limit of detection of 55 CFU/mL in 1× PBS buffer and 10 CFU/mL in 1% diluted chicken broth. The biosensor demonstrated 83–98% recovery rates in buffer and 87–96% in chicken broth
