Effects of increased self-regulated learning opportunities on student teachersâ metacognitive and motivational development
This intervention study focused on the relationships between student
teachersâ self-regulated learning (SRL) opportunities, their use of
metacognitive learning strategies and their motivation for learning. Results
indicate that student teachersâ use of metacognitive learning strategies
increases significantly in learning environments with increased SRL
opportunities. In opposite to these findings, no significant difference was
shown between student teachersâ motivation for learning before and after the
research period. However, student teachersâ expectancy, a component within
the motivational construct, did increase significantly in the research period.
Finally, minor significant positive correlations were found between the
metacognitive and motivational constructs measured. In general, the level of
SRL opportunities turns out to be a moderate predictor of student teachersâ
use of metacognitive learning strategies and motivation for learning, both
important constructs for their academic career
EFFECT OF CORTISOL TREATMENT ON HORMONAL RELATIONSHIPS IN CONGENITAL ADRENAL HYPERPLASIA
The temporal relationship between administration of cortisol and serum 17Î-hydroxyprogesterone was investigated in five patients aged 9-19 years with congenital adrenal hyperplasia due to 21-hydroxylase deficiency. There was marked variability in the 17Î-hydroxyprogesterone response (determined hourly for 24 h) of individual patients to administration of cortisol. Mean concentration was less than 0.030 Îmol/l in one patient but 0.519Î mol/l in another. Levels were higher in all patients while off treatment, and were greatest in those with salt-losing adrenal hyperplasia. Growth hormone secretion was not suppressed by treatment with cortisol. Withdrawal of cortisol for 3 days resulted in a significant decrease in the mean serum FSH/LH ratio and a rise in serum testosterone in all subjects. Classification of Supernovae
The current classification scheme for supernovae is presented. The main
observational features of the supernova types are described and the physical
implications briefly addressed. Differences between the homogeneous
thermonuclear type Ia and similarities among the heterogeneous core collapse
type Ib, Ic and II are highlighted. Transforming type IIb, narrow line type
IIn, supernovae associated with GRBs and few peculiar objects are also

History of clinical transplantation
How transplantation came to be a clinical discipline can be pieced together by perusing two volumes of reminiscences collected by Paul I. Terasaki in 1991-1992 from many of the persons who were directly involved. One volume was devoted to the discovery of the major histocompatibility complex (MHC), with particular reference to the human leukocyte antigens (HLAs) that are widely used today for tissue matching.1 The other focused on milestones in the development of clinical transplantation.2 All the contributions described in both volumes can be traced back in one way or other to the demonstration in the mid-1940s by Peter Brian Medawar that the rejection of allografts is an immunological phenomenon.3,4 © 2008 Springer New York
Search for Lorentz and CPT violation using sidereal time dependence of neutrino flavor transitions over a short baseline
A class of extensions of the Standard Model allows Lorentz and CPT violations, which can be identified
by the observation of sidereal modulations in the neutrino interaction rate. A search for such modulations
was performed using the T2K on-axis near detector. Two complementary methods were used in this study,
both of which resulted in no evidence of a signal. Limits on associated Lorentz and CPT-violating terms
from the Standard Model extension have been derived by taking into account their correlations in this
model for the first time. These results imply such symmetry violations are suppressed by a factor of more
than 10 20 at the GeV scale
Comprehensive analysis of epigenetic clocks reveals associations between disproportionate biological ageing and hippocampal volume
The concept of age acceleration, the difference between biological age and chronological age, is of growing interest, particularly with respect to age-related disorders, such as Alzheimerâs Disease (AD). Whilst studies have reported associations with AD risk and related phenotypes, there remains a lack of consensus on these associations. Here we aimed to comprehensively investigate the relationship between five recognised measures of age acceleration, based on DNA methylation patterns (DNAm age), and cross-sectional and longitudinal cognition and AD-related neuroimaging phenotypes (volumetric MRI and Amyloid-ÎČ PET) in the Australian Imaging, Biomarkers and Lifestyle (AIBL) and the Alzheimerâs Disease Neuroimaging Initiative (ADNI). Significant associations were observed between age acceleration using the Hannum epigenetic clock and cross-sectional hippocampal volume in AIBL and replicated in ADNI. In AIBL, several other findings were observed cross-sectionally, including a significant association between hippocampal volume and the Hannum and Phenoage epigenetic clocks. Further, significant associations were also observed between hippocampal volume and the Zhang and Phenoage epigenetic clocks within Amyloid-ÎČ positive individuals. However, these were not validated within the ADNI cohort. No associations between age acceleration and other Alzheimerâs disease-related phenotypes, including measures of cognition or brain Amyloid-ÎČ burden, were observed, and there was no association with longitudinal change in any phenotype. This study presents a link between age acceleration, as determined using DNA methylation, and hippocampal volume that was statistically significant across two highly characterised cohorts. The results presented in this study contribute to a growing literature that supports the role of epigenetic modifications in ageing and AD-related phenotypes
