    Microstructures and mechanical properties of as cast Mg‐Zr‐Ca alloys for biomedical applications

    The microstructures and mechanical properties of as cast Mg-Zr-Ca alloys were investigated for potential use in biomedical applications. The Mg-Zr-Ca alloys were fabricated by commercial pure Mg (99.9 mass-%), Ca (99.9 mass-%) and master Mg-33 mass-%Zr alloy. The microstructures of the alloys were examined by X-ray diffraction analysis and optical microscopy, and the mechanical properties were determined from tensile tests. The experimental results indicate that the Mg-Zr-Ca alloys with 1 mass-%Ca are composed of one single a phase; these alloys with 2 mass-%Ca consist of both Mg 2Ca and α phase, and all the alloys exhibit typical coarse microstructures. An increase in Zr increases the strength of Mg-Zr-Ca alloys with 1 mass-%Ca, and the formation of Mg2Ca decreases the strength of the alloys. Mg-1Zr-1Ca alloy (mass-%) has the highest strength and best ductility among all the studied alloys

    Bandgap properties of two-dimensional low-index photonic crystals

    We study the bandgap properties of two-dimensional photonic crystals created by a lattice of rods or holes conformed in a symmetric or asymmetric triangular structure. Using the plane-wave analysis, we calculate a minimum value of the refractive index contrast for opening both partial and full two-dimensional spectral gaps for both TM and TE polarized waves. We also analyze the effect of ellipticity of rods and holes and their orientation on the threshold value and the relative size of the bandgap.Comment: 5 pages, 6 figures, App. Phys. B. styl

    Effect of phosphatidylethanolamine and phosphatidylserine on antioxidant capacity, oxidative stability and color reversion of camellia seed oil

    Non-hydratable phospholipids as pro-oxidants are likely to cause a decrease in the quality of vegetable oils. The influence of phosphatidylethanolamine (PE) and phosphatidylserine (PS) on the oxidative stability, antioxidant capacity and color reversion of refined camellia seed oil (RCSO) was evaluated in this work. The PE/PS addition could improve the oxidative stability and antioxidant capacity, but was not a key factor in the color reversion of RCSO. The results clearly showed that PE and PS were not prooxidants but antioxidants in camellia seed oil, and the findings of the present study would be useful for extending the shelf-life of camellia seed oil and for retaining phospholipids during moderate refining

    What can the braking indices tell us about pulsars' nature?

    As a result of observational difficulties, braking indices of only six rotation-powered pulsars are obtained with certainty, all of which are remarkably smaller than the value (n=3n=3) expected for pure magnetodipole radiation model. This is still a real fundamental question not being well answered after nearly forty years of the discovery of pulsar. The main problem is that we are shamefully not sure about the dominant mechanisms that result in pulsars' spin-down. Based on the previous works, the braking index is re-examined, with a conclusion of suggesting a constant gap potential drop for pulsars with magnetospheric activities.     Muon anomalous magnetic moment in the standard model with two Higgs doublets

    The muon anomalous magnetic moment is investigated in the standard model with two Higgs doublets (S2HDM) motivated from spontaneous CP violation. Thus all the effective Yukawa couplings become complex. As a consequence of the non-zero phase in the couplings, the one loop contribution from the neutral scalar bosons could be positive and negative relying on the CP phases. The interference between one and two loop diagrams can be constructive in a large parameter space of CP-phases. This will result in a significant contribution to muon anomalous magnetic moment even in the flavor conserving process with a heavy neutral scalar boson (mh∌m_h \sim 200 GeV) once the effective muon Yukawa coupling is large (âˆŁÎŸÎŒâˆŁâˆŒ50|\xi_\mu|\sim 50). In general, the one loop contributions from lepton flavor changing scalar interactions become more important. In particular, when all contributions are positive in a reasonable parameter space of CP phases, the recently reported 2.6 sigma experiment vs. theory deviation can be easily explained even for a heavy scalar boson with a relative small Yukawa coupling in the S2HDM.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex file, 5 figures, published version Phys.     Weak Phase Îł\gamma and Strong Phase ÎŽ\delta from CP Averaged B→ππB\to \pi\pi and πK\pi K Decays

    Assuming SU(3) symmetry for the strong phases in the four decay modes B\rarrow \pi^-\pi^+, \pi^0 \pi^+, \pi^- K^+, \pi^- \bar{K}^0 and ignoring the relative small electroweak penguin effects in those decays, the weak phase Îł\gamma and the strong phase ÎŽ\delta can be determined in a model independent way by the CP-averaged branching ratios of the four decay modes. It appears that the current experimental data for B→ππB\to \pi\pi and πK\pi K decays prefer a negative value of cos⁥γcos⁥Ύ\cos\gamma\cos\delta. By combining with the other constraints from VubV_{ub}, Bd,s0−Bˉd,s0B^{0}_{d,s}-\bar{B}^{0}_{d,s} mixings and indirect CP-violating parameter Ï”K\epsilon_K within the standard model, two favorable solutions for the phases Îł\gamma and ÎŽ\delta are found to lie in the region: 35^{\circ}\alt\gamma\alt 62^{\circ} and 106^{\circ}\alt \delta \alt 180^{\circ} or 86^{\circ}\alt\gamma\alt 151^{\circ} and 0^{\circ}\alt\delta\alt 75^{\circ} within 1σ\sigma standard deviation. It is noted that if allowing the standard deviation of the data to be more than 1σ\sigma, the two solutions could approach to one solution with a much larger region for the phases Îł\gamma and ÎŽ\delta. Direct CP asymme try aÏ”â€Čâ€Č(π−K+)a_{\epsilon''}^{(\pi^- K^+)} in B\rarrow \pi^-K^+ decay can be as large as the present experimental upper bound. Direct CP asymmetry aÏ”â€Čâ€Č(π+π−)a_{\epsilon''}^{(\pi^+\pi^-)} in B\rarrow \pi^-\pi^+ decay can reach up to about 40% at 1σ\sigma level.Comment: 14 Pages, ReVTeX, 5 figures, one figure (Fig.3) is correcte

    Measurement of the Intrinsic Radiopurity of Cs-137/U-235/U-238/Th-232 in CsI(Tl) Crystal Scintillators

    The inorganic crystal scintillator CsI(Tl) has been used for low energy neutrino and Dark Matter experiments, where the intrinsic radiopurity is an issue of major importance. Low-background data were taken with a CsI(Tl) crystal array at the Kuo-Sheng Reactor Neutrino Laboratory. The pulse shape discrimination capabilities of the crystal, as well as the temporal and spatial correlations of the events, provide powerful means of measuring the intrinsic radiopurity of Cs-137 as well as the U-235, U-238 and Th-232 series. The event selection algorithms are described, with which the decay half-lives of Po-218, Po-214, Rn-220, Po-216 and Po-212 were derived. The measurements of the contamination levels, their concentration gradients with the crystal growth axis, and the uniformity among different crystal samples, are reported. The radiopurity in the U-238 and Th-232 series are comparable to those of the best reported in other crystal scintillators. Significant improvements in measurement sensitivities were achieved, similar to those from dedicated massive liquid scintillator detector. This analysis also provides in situ measurements of the detector performance parameters, such as spatial resolution, quenching factors, and data acquisition dead time.Comment: 28 pages, 12 figure

    Exploring morphological correlations among H2CO, 12CO, MSX and continuum mappings

    There are relatively few H2CO mappings of large-area giant molecular cloud (GMCs). H2CO absorption lines are good tracers for low-temperature molecular clouds towards star formation regions. Thus, the aim of the study was to identify H2CO distributions in ambient molecular clouds. We investigated morphologic relations among 6-cm continuum brightness temperature (CBT) data and H2CO (111-110; Nanshan 25-m radio telescope), 12CO (1--0; 1.2-m CfA telescope) and midcourse space experiment (MSX) data, and considered the impact of background components on foreground clouds. We report simultaneous 6-cm H2CO absorption lines and H110\alpha radio recombination line observations and give several large-area mappings at 4.8 GHz toward W49 (50'\times50'), W3 (70'\times90'), DR21/W75 (60'\times90') and NGC2024/NGC2023 (50'\times100') GMCs. By superimposing H2CO and 12CO contours onto the MSX color map, we can compare correlations. The resolution for H2CO, 12CO and MSX data was about 10', 8' and 18.3", respectively. Comparison of H2CO and 12CO contours, 8.28-\mu m MSX colorscale and CBT data revealed great morphological correlation in the large area, although there are some discrepancies between 12CO and H2CO peaks in small areas. The NGC2024/NGC2023 GMC is a large area of HII regions with a high CBT, but a H2CO cloud to the north is possible against the cosmic microwave background. A statistical diagram shows that 85.21% of H2CO absorption lines are distributed in the intensity range from -1.0 to 0 Jy and the \Delta V range from 1.206 to 5 km/s.Comment: 18 pages, 22 figures, 5 tables.     Theoretical study of the two-proton halo candidate 17^{17}Ne including contributions from resonant continuum and pairing correlations

    With the relativistic Coulomb wave function boundary condition, the energies, widths and wave functions of the single proton resonant orbitals for 17^{17}Ne are studied by the analytical continuation of the coupling constant (ACCC) approach within the framework of the relativistic mean field (RMF) theory. Pairing correlations and contributions from the single-particle resonant orbitals in the continuum are taken into consideration by the resonant Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) approach, in which constant pairing strength is used. It can be seen that the fully self-consistent calculations with NL3 and NLSH effective interactions mostly agree with the latest experimental measurements, such as binding energies, matter radii, charge radii and densities. The energy of π\pi2s1/2_{1/2} orbital is slightly higher than that of π1d5/2\pi1d_{5/2} orbital, and the occupation probability of the (π(\pi2s1/2)2_{1/2})^2 orbital is about 20%, which are in accordance with the shell model calculation and three-body model estimation
