Sjogren\u27s Syndrome: Relationship Between Ocular Findings and Parotid Sialograms
This study evaluates the incidence and severity of the ocular findings and its correlation with the parotid gland changes, as demonstrated by sialography, in 82 patients with Sjogren\u27s syndrome. It is shown that the ocular component of the syndrome manifests rather autonomously with respect to the accompanying collagen disease and that there seems to be only a tentative trend towards a positive correlation between the ocular and parotid findings. Sjogren\u27s syndrome immunologically is closer to the collagen diseases than to the so-called organ-specific autoimmune diseases
Two-phase stretching of molecular chains
While stretching of most polymer chains leads to rather featureless
force-extension diagrams, some, notably DNA, exhibit non-trivial behavior with
a distinct plateau region. Here we propose a unified theory that connects
force-extension characteristics of the polymer chain with the convexity
properties of the extension energy profile of its individual monomer subunits.
Namely, if the effective monomer deformation energy as a function of its
extension has a non-convex (concave up) region, the stretched polymer chain
separates into two phases: the weakly and strongly stretched monomers.
Simplified planar and 3D polymer models are used to illustrate the basic
principles of the proposed model. Specifically, we show rigorously that when
the secondary structure of a polymer is mostly due to weak non-covalent
interactions, the stretching is two-phase, and the force-stretching diagram has
the characteristic plateau. We then use realistic coarse-grained models to
confirm the main findings and make direct connection to the microscopic
structure of the monomers. We demostrate in detail how the two-phase scenario
is realized in the \alpha-helix, and in DNA double helix. The predicted plateau
parameters are consistent with single molecules experiments. Detailed analysis
of DNA stretching demonstrates that breaking of Watson-Crick bonds is not
necessary for the existence of the plateau, although some of the bonds do break
as the double-helix extends at room temperature. The main strengths of the
proposed theory are its generality and direct microscopic connection.Comment: 16 pges, 22 figure

Valid group comparisons can be made with the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9): A measurement invariance study across groups by demographic characteristics
This is the final version. Available on open access from Public Library of Science via the DOI in this recordData Availability: The database is freely accessible from the website of the National Institute of Statistics of Peru, URL: http://iinei.inei.gob.pe/microdatos/ The information can be obtained by entering the survey query tab and selecting the ENDES data using the health module data. Only cross-sectional information from 2016 ENDES Health Questionnaire was used. Objective Analyze the measurement invariance and the factor structure of the Patient Health Questionnaire-9 (PHQ-9) in the Peruvian population. Method Secondary data analysis performed using cross-sectional data from the Health Questionnaire of the Demographic and Health Survey in Peru. Variables of interest were the PHQ-9 and demographic characteristics (sex, age group, level of education, socioeconomic status, marital status, and area of residence). Factor structure was evaluated by standard confirmatory factor analysis (CFA), and measurement invariance by multi-group CFA, using standard goodness-of-fit indices criteria for interpreting results from both CFAs. Analysis of the internal consistency (α and ω) was also pursued. Results Data from 30,449 study participants were analyzed, 56.7% were women, average age was 40.5 years (standard deviation (SD) = 16.3), 65.9% lived in urban areas, 74.6% were married, and had 9 years of education on average (SD = 4.6). From standard CFA, a one-dimensional model presented the best fit (CFI = 0.936; RMSEA = 0.089; SRMR = 0.039). From multi-group CFA, all progressively restricted models had ΔCFI<0.01 across almost all groups by demographic characteristics. PHQ-9 reliability was optimal (α = ω = 0.87). Conclusions The evidence presents support for the one-dimensional model and measurement invariance of the PHQ-9 measure, allowing for reliable comparisons between sex, age groups, education level, socioeconomic status, marital status, and residence area, and recommends its use within the Peruvian population.Universidad Católica los Ángeles de Chimbote (ULADECH-Católica)PSYCOPERU Peruvian Research Institute of Educational and Social Psycholog
Response Facilitation Induced by Insulin-like Growth Factor-I in the Primary Somatosensory Cortex of MiceWas Reduced in Aging.
Aging is accompanied by a decline in cognition that can be due to a lower IGF-I level. We
studied response facilitation induced in primary somatosensory (S1) cortical neurons by repetitive
stimulation of whiskers in young and old mice. Layer 2/3 and 5/6 neurons were extracellularly
recorded in young ( 6 months of age) and old ( 20 month of age) anesthetized mice. IGF-I injection
in S1 cortex (10 nM; 0.2 L) increased whisker responses in young and old animals. A stimulation
train at 8 Hz induced a long-lasting response facilitation in only layer 2/3 neurons of young animals.
However, all cortical neurons from young and old animals showed long-lasting response facilitation
when IGF-I was applied in the S1 cortex. The reduction in response facilitation in old animals can
be due to a reduction in the IGF-I receptors as was indicated by the immunohistochemistry study.
Furthermore, a reduction in the performance of a whisker discrimination task was observed in old
animals. In conclusion, our findings indicate that there is a reduction in the synaptic plasticity of S1
neurons during aging that can be recovered by IGF-I. Therefore, it opens the possibility of use IGF-I
as a therapeutic tool to ameliorate the effects of heathy aging.post-print2685 K
Resiliencia y Burnout en enfermeras de un hospital general de Lima, Perú
Background: The present study aimed to determine the relationship between resilience and burnout dimensions (emotional wear, indifference, and professional efficacy) in nurses of a general hospital in Metropolitan Lima. Method: 150 nurses were evaluated with the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI - GS) and with the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale of 10 items (CD-RISC 10). The correlations between the variables were calculated and the scores were compared according to the types of shift and labor contract. . Results: There is a statistically significant relationship between resilience and burnout, being negative with the emotional stress and indifference dimensions, while with professional efficacy it was positive, obtaining small and moderate effect sizes. In addition, statistically significant differences and medium effect sizes in emotional stress and indifference were found according to the type of shift and employment contract. Conclusion: The resilience and dimensions of burnout have a significant relationship in nurses of a general hospital in Metropolitan Lima.Introducción: El presente estudio buscó determinar la relación entre la resiliencia y las dimensiones del burnout (desgaste emocional, indiferencia y eficacia profesional) en enfermeras de un hospital general de Lima Metropolitana. Usefulness of an Intrapartum Ultrasound Simulator (IUSim™) for Midwife Training: Results from an RCT
Introduction: We conducted a randomized study to determine whether a training session on a dedicated simulator (IUSim™) would facilitate the midwives in learning the technique of transperineal intrapartum ultrasound. Methods: Following a 30-min multimedia presentation including images and videos on how to obtain and measure the angle of progression (AoP) and the head-perineum distance (HPD), 6 midwives with no prior experience in intrapartum ultrasound were randomly split into 2 groups: 3 of them were assigned to the "training group"and 3 to the "control group."The midwives belonging to the former group were taught to measure the 2 sonographic parameters during a 3-h practical session conducted on IUSim™ under the supervision of an expert obstetrician. In the following 3 months, all the 6 midwives were asked to independently perform transperineal ultrasound during their clinical practice and to measure on the acquired images either the AoP or the HPD. The sonographic images were examined in blind by the teaching obstetrician who assigned a 0-3 score to the image quality (IQS) and to the measurement quality (MQS). Results: A total of 48 ultrasound images (24 patients) from 5 midwives were acquired and included in the study analysis. A midwife of the "training group"declined participation after the practical session. Independently from the randomization group, the image quality score (IQS + MQS) was significantly higher for the HPD compared with the AoP (2.5 ± 0.66 vs. 1.79 ± 1.14; p = 0.01). In the training group, the MQS of either AoP (2.66 ± 0.5 vs.1.46 ± 1.45. p = 0.038) and the HPD (2.9 ± 0.33 vs. 1.87 ± 0.83 p = 0.002) was significantly higher in comparison with the control group, while the IQS of both measurements was comparable between the 2 groups (1.91 ± 1.24 vs. 2.25 ± 0.865; p = 0.28). Conclusion: The use of a dedicated simulator may facilitate the midwives in learning how to measure the AoP and the HPD on transperineal ultrasound images
