Trendy v akademickom publikovaní: situácia a postoje k open access

Dizertačná práca Trendy v akademickom publikovaní: zmapovanie situácie a postojov ku open access sa zaoberá problematikou vedeckého publikovania so zameraním na trendy vo vydávaní odborných recenzovaných časopisov. Práca v teoretickej časti zhrnuje vývoj vedeckého publikovania – predovšetkým otvorené publikovanie a s ním spojené zmeny ekonomických modelov vydávania časopisov a zmeny povahy recenzného riadenia. Práca diskutuje i možné teoretické perspektívy pre štúdium digitálneho publikovania a publikačného správania v širšom kontexte informačnej vedy – predovšetkým z oblasti štúdia vedy a technológií (STS), sociálnej informatiky či informačnej ekológie. V praktickej časti práca prináša výsledky dvoch výskumov. Prvý výskum mapuje situáciu na poli vydávania vedeckých časopisov v Českej republike a zhrnuje výsledky dotazníkového skúmania, do ktorého se zapojilo takmer 300 redakcií vedeckých časopisov. Druhý výskum mapuje problematiku z druhej strany – z perspektívy autorov. Analýza obidvoch výskumov následne ukazuje, že akokoľvek je otvorené publikovanie v Českej republike rozšírené, spôsoby, akým se realizuje, nadväzujú viac na tradičný model publikovania a potenciál otvoreného prístupu zostáva z veľkej časti nevyužitý.Dizertační práce Trendy v akademickém publikování: zmapování situace a postojů k open access se zabývá problematikou vědeckého publikování se zaměřením na trendy ve vydávání odborných recenzovaných časopisů. V praktické části přináší práce výsledky dvou výzkumů. První výzkum mapuje situaci na poli vydávání vědeckých časopisů v České republice a shrnuje výsledky dotazníkového šetření, do kterého se zapojilo na 300 redakcí vědeckých časopisů. Druhý výzkum mapuje problematiku z druhé strany – z perspektivy autorů. Analýza obou výzkumů poté ukazuje, že ačkoliv je otevřené publikování v České republice rozšířené, způsoby, jakým se realizuje, navazují spíše na tradiční model publikování a potenciál otevřeného přístupu zůstává z velké části nevyužit.Doctoral thesis Trends in scholar publishing: mapping the situation and attitude towards open access explores the issue of scholar publishing with the focus on the trends in editing and publishing peer-reviewed journals. The thesis sums up the evolution of scholar publishing – especially the new trends of open access and the changes of economical models and the peer-review process in its theoretical part. It includes the discussion of possible theoretical approaches in a broad context of information science – especially in the field of science and technology studies (STS), social informatics or information ecology. In the practical part the thesis brings the results of two researches. The first maps the situation regarding journals publishing in the Czech Republic and is based on results of a survey in which over 300 editors took part. The second approaches the field from a different perspective – from the viewpoint of the authors–scientists. The analysis of both researches comes to the conclusion that even though open access is quite common in the Czech Republic, its usage is firmly rooted in the traditional publishing models and the potential of open access has not been fully used

Title in English: Geography of barriers: Examples of good barrier-free implementations The book Geography of Barriers: Examples of Good Barrier-free Practice offers a collection of texts that are interested in making space, services, and information accessible. Thus, the collection is primarily about barriers, their nature, localization, and possible effects. Under barriers, most people imagine material barriers for wheelchair users in the form of steps or sidewalk curbs. Only a few would think that barriers can be represented by loosely placed rugs, unfit lighting, large glass surface, a doorbell without visual output, unwanted attention, frequent asking and offering help, lack of language knowledge, pity, etc. Thus, the book broadens awareness of what can be considered a barrier. The texts are divided into three parts – theoretical, methodic, and empirical – and their arrangement follows the logic of thematic focusing from the most general to the most concrete types of barriers. While the theoretical part places the policies of accessibility into the wider context of scientific disciplines and their development – such as disability studies, disability geography or service design, the methodic part discusses the introduction of accessibility policies in the city of Brno, describing how it tried to make its space, services, and information more accessible. Finally, the empirical part offers 18 examples of relatively good barrier-free implementations that have been recently realized in Brno. This division reflects an effort to target several groups of readers. The first part thus addresses mainly students interested in accessibility issues, the second, methodic part is intended for politicians and municipalities searching for inspiration to implement their own accessibility measures and policies. The last part stating concrete examples of good barrier-free implementations is aimed at general public, at people who like to think about a whole range of topics related to accessibility of space, services, and information

Evidence-based librarianship, action research and design thinking as theoretical and methodological frameworks for library and information studies

Text upozorňuje na propast mezi akademickým výzkumem a praxí v knihovnách. Představuje tři teoreticko-metodologické rámce pro překonávání této propasti – na důkazech založené knihovnictví, akční výzkum a designové myšlení. Jádrem článku je systematické porovnání uvedených přístupů – jejich charakteristik, procesu a typických metod, které k výzkumu používají. From undistracted to instant reading and back: Prototyping a new digital library service

New technologies and digital services influence the current forms of reading, and public libraries respond to these possibilities by offering new services based mainly on ebooks. The constraints resulting from the recent waves of the COVID-19 pandemic have reinforced this trend. This work introduces the development process of new library services based on open web books experimentally developed at Masaryk University and the Municipal Library of Prague. Our initial research focused on people's behavior when reading a book in a browser, on elements of user interface interactions, and the overall context of reading on different types of devices, especially mobile. Through a Research through Design approach, qualitative inquiry, and prototyping, we have identified patterns in reading behavior and library users' needs, to which we have responded by designing a new service. We converted the new service concept into interactive prototypes in the Figma tool, which we further tested and iterated. The research supports reading in the digital world and brings new information about reading behavior in the age of instant digital services.Czech Technology Agency [TL04000391

When Designers are Non-designers: Open Endedness vs. Structure of Design Tools

In this paper, we explore types of toolsets that are suitable for design thinking processes, when design teams consist of non-designers. We have conducted a series of workshops to experiment with open-ended, semi-structured and structured tools, using design thinking for libraries as a research case. Our results clearly indicate that semi-structured tools fare best regarding variety of outputs, breadth of ideas and engagement of participants
