    Features of the Course of Generalized Periodontitis in Patients with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Bronchitis

    The purpose of the work is to determine the specifics of the course of chronic disseminated periodontitis in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Any changes in the water balance that go beyond the norm, in the process of evolution, first cause functional, and then morphological disorders of organs and tissues. 41% of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease + chronic disseminated periodontitis had a severe form of chronic disseminated periodontitis, 9% had an aggressive form of chronic disseminated periodontitis, while in the group without chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, similar figures were statistically lower and, respectively, 8% and amounted to 1%. In patients with varying degrees of damage to periodontal tissues with mild disseminated periodontitis, a higher result of the overall severity index by 15.5% was recorded compared to intact periodontium

    DEVELOPMENT OF HPLC SEPARATION METHOD OF GINSENOSIDES ON A POLYVINYL ALCOHOL-BONDED STATIONARY PHASE

    A simple high performance liquid chromatographic assay for the simultaneous quantitative analysis of seven ginsenosides, Rb1, Rb2, Rc, Rd, Re, Rf and Rg1 in commercial ginseng products is described. Chromatographic separation of the analytes was achieved in less than 20 min using a polyvinyl alcohol-bonded column with UV detection at 203 nm. Optimization of chromatographic conditions was determined by a three-factor central composite design, the variables being the percentage of acetonitrile in the mobile phase, column temperature and flow rate. A full quadratic model was found to be adequate in describing the separation of ginsenosides on the polyvinyl alcohol-bonded stationary phase. Complete separation of seven ginsenosides was achieved using acetonitrile–water (82.5/17.5) as the mobile phase run isocratically at a flow rate of 298 μL/min and with the column temperature at 9°C.The developed method was validated over the range of 10 – 120 μg/mL using a 5 μL sample injection volume. Intra- and inter-day variation for three ginsenoside standards (Rf, Rd and Rb1) at three concentration levels ranged from 0.07 to 0.83% expressed as the relative standard deviation. The accuracy based on the nominal concentration values at three concentration levels was in the range 98.7–100.8%. The limit of detection was between 0.43 and 1.03 μg/mL while the limit of quantification was from 1.42 to 3.13 μg/mL. The method is found to be applicable for the determination of ginsenosides in commercial ginseng product

    Properties and applications of undecylprodigiosin and other bacterial prodigiosins

    The growing demand to fulfill the needs of present-day medicine in terms of novel effective molecules has lead to reexamining some of the old and known bacterial secondary metabolites. Bacterial prodigiosins (prodiginines) have a long history of being re markable multipurpose compounds, best examined for their anticancer and antimalarial activities. Production of prodigiosin in the most common producer strain Serratia marcescens has been described in great detail. However, few reports have discussed the ecophysiological roles of these molecules in the producing strains, as well as their antibiotic and UV-protective properties. This review describes recent advances in the production process, biosynthesis, properties, and applications of bacterial prodigiosins. Special emphasis is put on undecylprodigiosin which has generally been a less studied member of the prodigiosin family. In addition, it has been suggested that proteins involved in undecylprodigiosin synthesis, RedG and RedH, could be a useful addition to the biocatalytic toolbox being able to mediate regio- and stereoselective oxidative cyclization. Judging by the number of recent references (216 for the 2007-2013 period), it has become clear that undecylprodigiosin and other bacterial prodigiosins still hold surprises in terms of valuable properties and applicative potential to medical and other industrial fields and that they still deserve continuing research curiosity
