Do adults with high functioning autism or Asperger Syndrome differ in empathy and emotion recognition?
The present study examined whether adults with high functioning autism (HFA) showed greater difficulties in (i) their self-reported ability to empathise with others and/or (ii) their ability to read mental states in othersâ eyes than adults with Asperger syndrome (AS). The Empathy Quotient (EQ) and âReading the Mind in the Eyesâ Test (Eyes Test) were compared in 43 adults with AS and 43 adults with HFA. No significant difference was observed on EQ score between groups, while adults with AS performed significantly better on the Eyes Test than those with HFA. This suggests that adults with HFA may need more support, particularly in mentalizing and complex emotion recognition, and raises questions about the existence of subgroups within autism spectrum conditions
Observations and analysis of two type IIP supernovae: the intrinsically faint object SN 2005cs and the ambiguous object SN 2005ay
Aims: To derive observational properties and physical parameters of the
progenitor stars of type IIP supernovae SN 2005ay and SN 2005cs from their
U,B,V,R,I CCD photometry, and to define their velocity behaviour. Methods:
Light curves are analysed, and the velocities and spectral characteristics of
SN 2005cs are obtained using synthetic spectra modeling. Results: Both
supernovae are found to be fainter than the average
SN IIP, with SN 2005cs being more subluminous and showing slight brightening
in the second half of plateau stage in the
V,R,I bands and a low expansion velocity.
The effects of two different plausible distance moduli on the derived
physical parameters of SN 2005ay are considered.
Two approaches are used to recover the amounts of the ejected 56Ni,
indicating masses of the order of
0.02 Msun, although late luminosities might indicate a higher amount for SN
2005ay, especially for the large distance case.
Constraints on the progenitor properties are also presented, based on
empirical analytical models. Two approaches are used to estimate the expansion
velocities at the middle of the plateau phase. SN 2005cs represents an example
of where all 3 physical parameters, velocity, energy and 56Ni mass are lower
than average, a correlation not always observed in SNe IIP. SN 2005ay may
belong to the same class if the shorter distance possibility is adopted.
Furthermore, the estimated mass range for SN 2005cs is in agreement with limits

Centrifugal quantum states of neutrons
We propose a method for observation of the quasi-stationary states of
neutrons, localized near the curved mirror surface. The bounding effective well
is formed by the centrifugal potential and the mirror Fermi-potential. This
phenomenon is an example of an exactly solvable "quantum bouncer" problem that
could be studied experimentally. It could provide a promising tool for studying
fundamental neutron-matter interactions, as well as quantum neutron optics and
surface physics effects. We develop formalism, which describes quantitatively
the neutron motion near the mirror surface. The effects of mirror roughness are

Thermonuclear Burning Regimes and the Use of SNe Ia in Cosmology
The calculations of the light curves of thermonuclear supernovae are carried
out by a method of multi-group radiation hydrodynamics. The effects of spectral
lines and expansion opacity are taken into account. The predictions for UBVI
fluxes are given. The values of rise time for B and V bands found in our
calculations are in good agreement with the observed values. We explain why our
results for the rise time have more solid physical justification than those
obtained by other authors. It is shown that small variations in the chemical
composition of the ejecta, produced in the explosions with different regimes of
nuclear burning, can influence drastically the light curve decline in the B
band and, to a lesser extent, in the V band. We argue that recent results on
positive cosmological constant Lambda, found from the high redshift supernova
observations, could be wrong in the case of possible variations of the

Improved Standardization of Type II-P Supernovae: Application to an Expanded Sample
In the epoch of precise and accurate cosmology, cross-confirmation using a
variety of cosmographic methods is paramount to circumvent systematic
uncertainties. Owing to progenitor histories and explosion physics differing
from those of Type Ia SNe (SNe Ia), Type II-plateau supernovae (SNe II-P) are
unlikely to be affected by evolution in the same way. Based on a new analysis
of 17 SNe II-P, and on an improved methodology, we find that SNe II-P are good
standardizable candles, almost comparable to SNe Ia. We derive a tight Hubble
diagram with a dispersion of 10% in distance, using the simple correlation
between luminosity and photospheric velocity introduced by Hamuy & Pinto 2002.
We show that the descendent method of Nugent et al. 2006 can be further
simplified and that the correction for dust extinction has low statistical
impact. We find that our SN sample favors, on average, a very steep dust law
with total to selective extinction R_V<2. Such an extinction law has been
recently inferred for many SNe Ia. Our results indicate that a distance
measurement can be obtained with a single spectrum of a SN II-P during the
plateau phase combined with sparse photometric measurements.Comment: ApJ accepted version. Minor change

Folliculin regulates cellâcell adhesion, AMPK, and mTORC1 in a cellâtypeâspecific manner in lungâderived cells
Abstract Germline lossâofâfunction BHD mutations cause cystic lung disease and hereditary pneumothorax, yet little is known about the impact of BHD mutations in the lung. Folliculin (FLCN), the product of the BirtâHoggâDube (BHD) gene, has been linked to altered cellâcell adhesion and to the AMPK and mTORC1 signaling pathways. We found that downregulation of FLCN in human bronchial epithelial (HBE) cells decreased the phosphorylation of ACC, a marker of AMPK activation, while downregulation of FLCN in small airway epithelial (SAEC) cells increased the activity of phosphoâS6, a marker of mTORC1 activation, highlighting the cell typeâdependent functions of FLCN. Cellâcell adhesion forces were significantly increased in FLCNâdeficient HBE cells, consistent with prior findings in FLCNâdeficient human kidneyâderived cells. To determine how these altered cellâcell adhesion forces impact the lung, we exposed mice with heterozygous inactivation of Bhd (similarly to humans with germline inactivation of one BHD allele) to mechanical ventilation at high tidal volumes. Bhd+/â mice exhibited a trend (P = 0.08) toward increased elastance after 6 h of ventilation at 24 cc/kg. Our results indicate that FLCN regulates the AMPK and mTORC1 pathways and cellâcell adhesion in a cell typeâdependent manner. FLCN deficiency may impact the physiologic response to inflationâinduced mechanical stress, but further investigation is required. We hypothesize that FLCNâdependent effects on signaling and cellular adhesion contribute to the pathogenesis of cystic lung disease in BHD patients
The relationship between sensory sensitivity and autistic traits in the general population.
Individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASDs) tend to have sensory processing difficulties (Baranek et al. in J Child Psychol Psychiatry 47:591â601, 2006). These difficulties include over- and under-responsiveness to sensory stimuli, and problems modulating sensory input (Ben-Sasson et al. in J Autism Dev Disorders 39:1â11, 2009). As those with ASD exist at the extreme end of a continuum of autistic traits that is also evident in the general population, we investigated the link between ASD and sensory sensitivity in the general population by administering two questionnaires online to 212 adult participants. Results showed a highly significant positive correlation (r = .775, p < .001) between number of autistic traits and the frequency of sensory processing problems. These data suggest a strong link between sensory processing and autistic traits in the general population, which in turn potentially implicates sensory processing problems in social interaction difficulties
Autism as a disorder of neural information processing: directions for research and targets for therapy
The broad variation in phenotypes and severities within autism spectrum disorders suggests the involvement of multiple predisposing factors, interacting in complex ways with normal developmental courses and gradients. Identification of these factors, and the common developmental path into which theyfeed, is hampered bythe large degrees of convergence from causal factors to altered brain development, and divergence from abnormal brain development into altered cognition and behaviour. Genetic, neurochemical, neuroimaging and behavioural findings on autism, as well as studies of normal development and of genetic syndromes that share symptoms with autism, offer hypotheses as to the nature of causal factors and their possible effects on the structure and dynamics of neural systems. Such alterations in neural properties may in turn perturb activity-dependent development, giving rise to a complex behavioural syndrome many steps removed from the root causes. Animal models based on genetic, neurochemical, neurophysiological, and behavioural manipulations offer the possibility of exploring these developmental processes in detail, as do human studies addressing endophenotypes beyond the diagnosis itself
Requests On E-Mail: a Cross-Cultural Comparison
This study investigates differences in request e-mails written in English by Chinese English learners and native American English speakers The results show that while Chinese English learners treat e-mail communications like either formal letters or telephone conversations, native American English speakers regard e-mail communications as closer to written memos It was also found that although the native American English speakers structure their e-mail request messages in a rather direct sequence, the linguistic forms they employ to express their requests are more indirect In contrast, the Chinese English learners structure their request messages in an indirect sequence, but the linguistic forms they use to realize their requests are more direct Given this contrast, it is not surprising that some of the request samples written by Chinese English learners were judged as very impolite by the native English speaking evaluators in this study The findings of this study thus demonstrate the importance of studying requests within the overall discourse in which they occur.
