Temperature and load-ratio dependent fatigue-crack growth in the CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy
Multiple-principal element alloys known as high-entropy alloys have rapidly been gaining attention for the vast variety of compositions and potential combinations of properties that remain to be explored. Of these alloys, one of the earliest, the ‘Cantor alloy’ CrMnFeCoNi, displays excellent damage-tolerance with tensile strengths of ∼1 GPa and fracture toughness values in excess of 200 MPa√m; moreover, these mechanical properties tend to further improve at cryogenic temperatures. However, few studies have explored its corresponding fatigue properties. Here we expand on our previous study to examine the mechanics and mechanisms of fatigue-crack propagation in the CrMnFeCoNi alloy (∼7 μm grain size), with emphasis on long-life, near-threshold fatigue behavior, specifically as a function of load ratio at temperatures between ambient and liquid-nitrogen temperatures (293 K–77 K). We find that ΔKth fatigue thresholds are decreased with increasing positive load ratios, R between 0.1 and 0.7, but are increased at decreasing temperature. These effects can be attributed to the role of roughness-induced crack closure, which was estimated using compliance measurements. Evidence of deformation twinning at the crack tip during fatigue-crack advance was not apparent at ambient temperatures but seen at higher stress intensities (ΔK ∼ 20 MPa√m) at 77 K by post mortem microstructural analysis for tests at R = 0.1 and particularly at 0.7. Overall, the fatigue behavior of this alloy was found to be superior, or at least comparable, to conventional cryogenic and TWIP steels such as 304 L or 316 L steels and Fe-Mn steels; these results coupled with the remarkable strength and fracture toughness of the Cantor alloy at low temperatures indicate significant promise for the utility of this material for applications at cryogenic environments
Extension of the Poincar\'e Group and Non-Abelian Tensor Gauge Fields
In the recently proposed generalization of the Yang-Mills theory the group of
gauge transformation gets essentially enlarged. This enlargement involves an
elegant mixture of the internal and space-time symmetries. The resulting group
is an extension of the Poincar\'e group with infinitely many generators which
carry internal and space-time indices. This is similar to the super-symmetric
extension of the Poincar\'e group, where instead of an anti-commuting spinor
variable one should introduce a new vector variable. The construction of
irreducible representations of the extended Poincar\'e algebra identifies a
vector variable with the derivative of the Pauli-Lubanski vector over its
length. As a result of this identification the generators of the gauge group
have nonzero components only in the plane transversal to the momentum and are
projecting out non-Abelian tensor gauge fields into the transversal plane,
keeping only their positively definite space-like components.Comment: 21 page
Ferromagnetic spin-polaron on complex lattices
We present a simpler derivation of the exact solution of a spin-polaron in a
ferromagnet and generalize it to complex lattices and/or longer range exchange
interactions. As a specific example, we analyze a two-dimensional MnO-like
lattice (as in the ferromagnetic layers in LaMnO) and discuss the
properties of the resulting spin-polaron in various regimes. At strong
couplings the solution is reminiscent of the Zhang-Rice singlet, however the
electronic wavefunction involved in the singlet is dependent on the momentum of
the singlet, and multiple bands may appear.Comment: 12 pages, 7 figure

Direct digital control of an efficient silicon+lequid crystal phase shifter
We demonstrate a phase shifter based on a silicon slot waveguide infiltrated with liquid crystal. We achieve a phase shift of 73 pi for a 5V drive voltage, with a voltage-length product of 0.022V.mm around 1V. We can drive the phase shifter directly with a 1V, duobinary pulse-width-modulated signal, allowing direct digital CMOS control of an analog optical phase shifter
A network-aware framework for energy-efficient data acquisition in wireless sensor networks
Wireless sensor networks enable users to monitor the physical world at an extremely high fidelity. In order to collect the data generated by these tiny-scale devices, the data management community has proposed the utilization of declarative data-acquisition frameworks. While these frameworks have facilitated the energy-efficient retrieval of data from the physical environment, they were agnostic of the underlying network topology and also did not support advanced query processing semantics. In this paper we present KSpot+, a distributed network-aware framework that optimizes network efficiency by combining three components: (i) the tree balancing module, which balances the workload of each sensor node by constructing efficient network topologies; (ii) the workload balancing module, which minimizes data reception inefficiencies by synchronizing the sensor network activity intervals; and (iii) the query processing module, which supports advanced query processing semantics. In order to validate the efficiency of our approach, we have developed a prototype implementation of KSpot+ in nesC and JAVA. In our experimental evaluation, we thoroughly assess the performance of KSpot+ using real datasets and show that KSpot+ provides significant energy reductions under a variety of conditions, thus significantly prolonging the longevity of a WSN
Probing Broad Absorption Line Quasar Outflows: X-ray Insights
Energetic outflows appear to occur in conjunction with active mass accretion
onto supermassive black holes. These outflows are most readily observed in the
approximately 10% of quasars with broad absorption lines, where the observer's
line of sight passes through the wind. Until fairly recently, the paucity of
X-ray data from these objects was notable, but now sensitive hard-band missions
such as Chandra and XMM-Newton are routinely detecting broad absorption line
quasars. The X-ray regime offers qualitatively new information for the
understanding of these objects, and these new results must be taken into
account in theoretical modeling of quasar winds.Comment: Submitted to Advances in Space Research for New X-ray Results from

Design of thin-film photonic metamaterial L\"uneburg lens using analytical approach
We design an all-dielectric L\"uneburg lens as an adiabatic space-variant
lattice explicitly accounting for finite film thickness. We describe an
all-analytical approach to compensate for the finite height of subwavelength
dielectric structures in the pass-band regime. This method calculates the
effective refractive index of the infinite-height lattice from effective medium
theory, then embeds a medium of the same effective index into a slab waveguide
of finite height and uses the waveguide dispersion diagram to calculate a new
effective index. The results are compared with the conventional numerical
treatment - a direct band diagram calculation, using a modified
three-dimensional lattice with the superstrate and substrate included in the
cell geometry. We show that the analytical results are in good agreement with
the numerical ones, and the performance of the thin-film L\"uneburg lens is
quite different than the estimates obtained assuming infinite height.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figures, uses opex3.st
Pricing and Hedging American Options: A Recursive Integration Method
In this paper, we present a new method for pricing and hedging American options along with an efficient implementation procedure. The proposed method is efficient and accurate in computing both option values and various option hedge parameters. We demonstrate the computation accuracy and efficiency of this numerical procedure in relation to other competing approaches. We also show how the method can be applied to the case of any American option for which a closed-form solution exists for the corresponding European option
