Baryonic Matter in the Hidden Local Symmetry Induced from Holographic QCD Models

Baryonic matter is studied in the Skyrme model by taking into account the roles of π,\pi, ρ\rho, and ω\omega mesons through the hidden local symmetry up to O(p4)\mathcal{O}(p^4) terms including the homogeneous Wess-Zumino (hWZ) terms. Using the master formulas for the low energy constants derived from holographic QCD models the skyrmion matter properties can be quantitatively calculated with the input values of the pion decay constant fπf_\pi and the vector meson mass mρm_\rho^{}. We find that the hWZ terms are responsible for the repulsive interactions of the ω\omega meson. In addition, the self-consistently included O(p4)\mathcal{O}(p^4) terms with the hWZ terms is found to increase the half skyrmion phase transition point above the normal nucleon density.Comment: Contribution to SCGT12 "KMI-GCOE Workshop on Strong Coupling Gauge Theories in the LHC Perspective", 4-7 Dec. 2012, Nagoya Universit

Hidden Local Symmetry and Infinite Tower of Vector Mesons for Baryons

In an effort to access dense baryonic matter relevant for compact stars in a unified framework that handles both single baryon and multibaryon systems on the same footing, we first address a holographic dual action for a single baryon focusing on the role of the infinite tower of vector mesons deconstructed from five dimensions. To leading order in 't Hooft coupling λ=NcgYM2\lambda=N_c g_{\rm YM}^2, one has the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) Skyrmion that results when the warping of the bulk background and the Chern-Simons term in the Sakai-Sugimoto D4/D8-D8ˉ{\bar{\rm D8}} model are ignored. The infinite tower was found by Sutcliffe to induce flow to a conformal theory, i.e., the BPS. We compare this structure to that of the SS model consisting of a 5D Yang-Mills action in warped space and the Chern-Simons term in which higher vector mesons are integrated out while preserving hidden local symmetry and valid to O(λ0)O(\lambda^0) and O(p4)O(p^4) in the chiral counting. We point out the surprisingly important role of the ω\omega meson that figures in the Chern-Simons term that encodes chiral anomaly in the baryon structure and that may be closely tied to short-range repulsion in nuclear interactions.Comment: 9 pages, REVTeX, to be published in Phys. Objective To prove the hypothesis that the parameters of intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring (IONM) during will be more deteriorated in neuromuscular scoliosis (NMS) than in adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS). Methods This retrospective study reviewed the data of 69 patients (NMS=32, AIS=37) who underwent scoliosis surgery under IONM. The amplitude of motor evoked potentials (MEPs), and the amplitude and the latency of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEPs) were examined. Demographic, preoperative, perioperative and postoperative data were analyzed to determine whether they affected the IONM parameters for each group. Results Of the items analyzed, the bleeding amount was the only significant risk factor for SEP latency deterioration in the NMS group only. The amplitude of SEP and MEP did not correlate with the hemodynamic parameters. The NMS/AIS ratios of the bleeding-related parameters were higher in the order of bleeding amount/weight (2.62, p<0.01), bleeding amount/body mass index (2.13, p<0.01), and bleeding amount (1.56, p<0.01). This study suggests that SEP latency is more vulnerable than SEP or MEP amplitude in ischemic conditions during scoliosis surgery. Conclusion In NMS patients, it should be considered that the bleeding amount can have a critical effect on intraoperative electrophysiological deterioration

Artificial External Glottic Device for Passive Lung Insufflation

PURPOSE: For patients with neuromuscular disease, air stacking, which inflates the lungs to deep volumes, is important for many reasons. However, neuromuscular patients with severe glottic dysfunction or indwelling tracheostomy tubes cannot air stack effectively. For these patients, we developed a device that permits deep lung insufflations substituting for glottic function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty- seven patients with bulbar-innervated muscle weakness and/or tracheostomies were recruited. Twenty-three had amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, and 14 were tetraplegic patients due to cervical spinal cord injury. An artificial external glottic device (AEGD) was used to permit passive deep lung insufflation. In order to confirm the utility of AEGD, vital capacity, maximum insufflation capacity (MIC), and lung insufflation capacity (LIC) with AEGD (LICA) were measured. RESULTS: For 30 patients, MICs were initially zero. However, with the use of the AEGD, LICA was measurable for all patients. The mean LICA was 1,622.7±526.8 mL. Although MIC was measurable for the remaining 7 patients without utilizing the AEGD, it was significantly less than LICA, which was 1,084.3±259.9 mL and 1,862.9±248 mL, respectively (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The AEGD permits lung insufflation by providing deeper lung volumes than possible by air stacking.ope

Effects of Music Therapy on Mood in Stroke Patients

PURPOSE: To investigate the effects of music therapy on depressive mood and anxiety in post-stroke patients and evaluate satisfaction levels of patients and caregivers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Eighteen post-stroke patients, within six months of onset and mini mental status examination score of over 20, participated in this study. Patients were divided into music and control groups. The experimental group participated in the music therapy program for four weeks. Psychological status was evaluated with the Beck Anxiety Inventory (BAI) and Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) before and after music therapy. Satisfaction with music therapy was evaluated by a questionnaire. RESULTS: BAI and BDI scores showed a greater decrease in the music group than the control group after music therapy, but only the decrease of BDI scores were statistically significant (p=0.048). Music therapy satisfaction in patients and caregivers was affirmative. CONCLUSION: Music therapy has a positive effect on mood in post-stroke patients and may be beneficial for mood improvement with stroke. These results are encouraging, but further studies are needed in this field.ope

Correlation Between the Severity of Multifidus Fatty Degeneration and the Size of Ossification of Posterior Longitudinal Ligament at Each Spinal Level

Objective This study aimed to investigate the correlation between ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (OPLL) size and multifidus fatty degeneration (MFD), hypothesizing that larger OPLL sizes are associated with worse MFD. Methods One hundred four patients with cervical OPLL who underwent surgery were screened. OPLL occupying diameter and area ratios, the severity of MFD using the Goutallier classification, and range of motion (ROM) of cervical flexion-extension (ΔCobb) were measured. Correlation analyses between OPLL size, MFD severity, and ΔCobb were conducted. MFD severity was compared for each OPLL type using one-way analysis of variance. Results The final clinical data from 100 patients were analyzed. The average Goutallier grade of C2–7 significantly correlated with the average OPLL diameter and area occupying ratios, and OPLL involved vertebral level (r = 0.58, p < 0.01; r = 0.40, p < 0.01; r = 0.47, p < 0.01, respectively). The OPLL size at each cervical level significantly correlated with MFD of the same or 1–3 adjacent levels. ΔCobb angle was negatively correlated with the average Goutallier grade (r = -0.31, p < 0.01) and average OPLL occupying diameter and area ratios (r = -0.31, p < 0.01; r = -0.35, p < 0.01, respectively). Patients with continuous OPLL exhibited worse MFD than those with segmental OPLL (p < 0.01). Conclusion OPLL size is clinically correlated with MFD and cervical ROM. OPLL at one spinal level affects MFD at the same and 1–3 adjacent spinal levels. The worsening severity of MFD is associated with the longitudinal continuity of OPLL

SPOP mutations in prostate cancer across demographically diverse patient cohorts

BACKGROUND: Recurrent mutations in the Speckle-Type POZ Protein (SPOP) gene occur in up to 15% of prostate cancers. However, the frequency and features of cancers with these mutations across different populations is unknown. OBJECTIVE: To investigate SPOP mutations across diverse cohorts and validate a series of assays employing high-resolution melting (HRM) analysis and Sanger sequencing for mutational analysis of formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded material. DESIGN SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: 720 prostate cancer samples from six international cohorts spanning Caucasian, African American, and Asian patients, including both prostate-specific antigen-screened and unscreened populations, were screened for their SPOP mutation status. Status of SPOP was correlated to molecular features (ERG rearrangement, PTEN deletion, and CHD1 deletion) as well as clinical and pathologic features. RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: Overall frequency of SPOP mutations was 8.1% (4.6% to 14.4%), SPOP mutation was inversely associated with ERG rearrangement (P<.01), and SPOP mutant (SPOPmut) cancers had higher rates of CHD1 deletions (P<.01). There were no significant differences in biochemical recurrence in SPOPmut cancers. Limitations of this study include missing mutational data due to sample quality and lack of power to identify a difference in clinical outcomes. CONCLUSION: SPOP is mutated in 4.6% to 14.4% of patients with prostate cancer across different ethnic and demographic backgrounds. There was no significant association between SPOP mutations with ethnicity, clinical, or pathologic parameters. Mutual exclusivity of SPOP mutation with ERG rearrangement as well as a high association with CHD1 deletion reinforces SPOP mutation as defining a distinct molecular subclass of prostate cancer
