Non-Fickian Interdiffusion of Dynamically Asymmetric Species: A Molecular Dynamics Study

    Get PDF
We use Molecular Dynamics combined with Dissipative Particle Dynamics to construct a model of a binary mixture where the two species differ only in their dynamic properties (friction coefficients). For an asymmetric mixture of slow and fast particles we study the interdiffusion process. The relaxation of the composition profile is investigated in terms of its Fourier coefficients. While for weak asymmetry we observe Fickian behavior, a strongly asymmetric system exhibits clear indications of anomalous diffusion, which occurs in a crossover region between the Cases I (Fickian) and II (sharp front moving with constant velocity), and is close to the Case II limit.Comment: to appear in J. Seven glasses with an alkali oxide content in the range 9.57 to 29.53 mole percent were investigated. The temperature at which the transition of microheterogeneous mixing to the condition of mutual solubility occurs on heating is found. It is found that the altered constituent composition results in the alteration in the percentage amount of the coexisting phases

Adults with High-functioning Autism Process Web Pages With Similar Accuracy but Higher Cognitive Effort Compared to Controls

To accommodate the needs of web users with high-functioning autism, a designer's only option at present is to rely on guidelines that: i) have not been empirically evaluated and ii) do not account for the di erent levels of autism severity. Before designing effective interventions, we need to obtain an empirical understanding of the aspects that speci c user groups need support with. This has not yet been done for web users at the high ends of the autism spectrum, as often they appear to execute tasks effortlessly, without facing barriers related to their neurodiverse processing style. This paper investigates the accuracy and efficiency with which high-functioning web users with autism and a control group of neurotypical participants obtain information from web pages. Measures include answer correctness and a number of eye-tracking features. The results indicate similar levels of accuracy for the two groups at the expense of efficiency for the autism group, showing that the autism group invests more cognitive effort in order to achieve the same results as their neurotypical counterparts

    Digital transformation of insurance sector

    Get PDF
Nowadays the digital revolution is one of the most important determinants of economic development. The penetration of Internet and the dynamically changing business environment confronts the conservative insurance sector with the opportunities and challenges, arising from the need to adapt to the digital economy. The global pandemic COVID-19 has had its impact and accelerated the digitalization process in the lagging insurance sector. The subject of this study are the problems, related to the determination of the nature and features of the digital transformation in the insurance sector. The purpose of this report is to examine the need of digital transformation in the insurance sector and the change in business models, due to the implementation and expansion of information technology. Through a theoretical summary will be revealed the impact of digitalization on the activities of insurance companies, on customers’ behavior and will be drawn conclusions about the application of technologies for increasing the competitive power

    Latour for Architects

    Get PDF
Bruno Latour is one of the leading figures in Social Sciences today, but his contributions are also widely recognised in the arts. His theories ‘flourished’ in the 1980s in the aftermath of the structuralism wave and generated new concepts and methodologies for the understanding of the social. In the past decade, Latour and his Actor-Network Theory (ANT) have gained popularity among researchers in the field of architecture. Latour for Architects is the first introduction to the key concepts and ideas of Bruno Latour that are relevant to architects. First, the book discusses critically how specific methods and insights from his philosophy can inspire new thinking in architecture and design pedagogy. Second, it explores examples from architectural practice and urban design, and reviews recent attempts to extend the methods of ANT into the fields of architectural and urban studies. Third, the book advocates an ANT-inspired approach to architecture, and examines how its methodological insights can trace new research avenues in the field, reflecting meticulously on its epistemological offerings. Drawing on many lively examples from the world of architectural practice, the book makes a compelling argument about the agency of architectural design and the role architects can play in re-ordering the world we live in. Following Latour’s philosophy offers a new way to handle all the objects of human and nonhuman collective life, to re-examine the role of matter in design practice, and to redefine the forms of social, political and ethical associations that bind us together in cities
