    Authors have already proposed a linkage system with rotational friction dampers that can be expected to dissipate seismic energy rather than the main frame. In this paper, the relationship between the rotational angle of the linkage system and inter-story drift angle of a structure was investigated. Consequently, a three-bay twelve-story steel frame with linkage system was analyzed by a numerical simulation program based on a theory of non-linear dynamic analysis. The distribution of slipping moment of friction damper along with the height of the main structure was discussed. Meanwhile, optimal slipping moment range was suggested according to analysis results

    Performance comparison between 8- and 14-bit-depth imaging in polarization-sensitive swept-source optical coherence tomography

    Recently the effects of reduced bit-depth acquisition on swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) image quality have been evaluated by using simulations and empirical studies, showing that image acquisition at 8-bit depth allows high system sensitivity with only a minimal drop in the signal-to-noise ratio compared to higher bit-depth systems. However, in these studies the 8-bit data is actually 12- or 14-bit ADC data numerically truncated to 8 bits. In practice, a native 8-bit ADC could actually possess a true bit resolution lower than this due to the electronic jitter in the converter etc. We compare true 8- and 14-bit-depth imaging of SS-OCT and polarization-sensitive SS-OCT (PS-SS-OCT) by using two hardware-synchronized high-speed data acquisition (DAQ) boards. The two DAQ boards read exactly the same imaging data for comparison. The measured system sensitivity at 8-bit depth is comparable to that for 14-bit acquisition when using the more sensitive of the available full analog input voltage ranges of the ADC. Ex-vivo structural and birefringence images of equine tendon indicate no significant differences between images acquired by the two DAQ boards suggesting that 8-bit DAQ boards can be employed to increase imaging speeds and reduce storage in clinical SS-OCT/PS-SS-OCT systems. One possible disadvantage is a reduced imaging dynamic range which can manifest itself as an increase in image artifacts due to strong Fresnel reflection

    This paper describes that beam-to-column connection deformations may have a significant effect on the behavior of semirigid steel frames subjected to earthquake excitations and the limits of their ability for keeping connected through the quake. Actual frames have areas that are called as panel zones at intersections of beams and columns, and beams are not connected perfectly rigid to columns, although primary frame analyses deal with those areas as points. In this study, not shear deformation in the panel zones but also local deformations of column walls at height of beam flanges were considered for dynamic response analyses of multi-storied steel frames. The local deformations are out of plane deformations of column walls caused by flange forces. A series of numerical computations on multi-storied semirigid steel frames incorporating various strengths, initial stiffness and post yield stiffness of panel zones and beam-to-column connections are mentioned. If both panel zones and beam-to-column connections are weak and not so much rigid, the joints are weak links in which inelastic deformations are concentrated and the beams and columns will not develop their bending strength under lateral loading

    In vivo evaluation of human skin anisotropy by polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography

    We performed an in vivo three-dimensional analysis of anisotropic changes in the dermal birefringence of mechanically deformed human skin using polarization-sensitive optical coherence tomography (PS-OCT). The papillary-dermal birefringence of the forehead increased significantly when the skin was shrunk parallel to the body axis, and decreased significantly when the skin was shrunk perpendicular to the body axis. En-face images of the papillary-dermal birefringence revealed variations among individual subjects, and that both shrinking parallel to and stretching in perpendicular to the body axis promoted the formation of macro rope-like birefringent domains. We found that PS-OCT is useful for understanding anisotropic properties of collagen structure in the skin

    Os ícones culturais vintage na comunicação do turismo de Lisboa

    Dissertação de Mestrado em Comunicação SocialCom um público cada vez mais exigente e sofisticado, a indústria do Turismo é altamente dinâmica e precisa responder rápido aos anseios do público, gerenciando sua imagem e criando estratégias de comunicação para atingir o máximo de seu potencial. As cidades não são exceção a esta necessidade de afirmação turística e, por isso, esta pesquisa investiga os ícones culturais vintage na comunicação do turismo de Lisboa com o objetivo de compreender como estes são utilizados na comunicação visual da cidade. Esta investigação analisou semiologicamente sete capas do guia Follow Me Lisboa do período entre janeiro de 2017 e dezembro de 2018 e três imagens do website do Turismo de Lisboa que possuem conexões com ícones da cidade. Uma entrevista semiestruturada em profundidade ao gerente de imprensa e relações públicas da Associação do Turismo de Lisboa permitiu a identificação da intencionalidade da comunicação do Turismo de Lisboa e um inquérito por questionário obteve as principais perceções do público sobre a cidade de Lisboa enquanto destino turístico. Os resultados indicam que a comunicação da cidade de Lisboa ainda utiliza pouco seus ícones culturais vintage; o elétrico e azulejo são os ícones mais relevantes e característicos de Lisboa para os inquiridos. Os termos nostalgia e autenticidade são os mais associados a cidade, notando-se algum descolamento entre a intencionalidade da Associação do Turismo de Lisboa e a perceção do público sobre as imagens da cidade de Lisboa, que permite identificar oportunidades de melhoria.Considering an increasingly demanding and sophisticated public, the tourism industry is highly dynamic and needs to react quickly to public demands, managing its image and creating communication strategies to reach its full potential. Cities are no exception to this need of touristic affirmation and so this research approaches the vintage cultural icons in tourism communication of Lisbon with the aim to understand how they are being used in visual communications of the city. This investigation analyzed seven covers of the guide Follow Me Lisboa between January 2017 and December 2018 and three pictures from the website of Turismo de Lisboa that shows relations to city icons. An in-depth semi-structured interview with the Press and PR Manager of Associação do Turismo de Lisboa allowed the identification of the intentionality of the Lisbon Tourism Communication and a questionnaire survey obtained the main perceptions of the sample about the city of Lisbon as tourism destination. The results indicate that the communication of the city of Lisbon makes little use of its vintage cultural icons; tram and tiles are the most relevant and characteristic icons of Lisbon for the sample. The terms nostalgia and authenticity are the most associated with the city and there is a detachment between the intentionality of the Associação do Turismo de Lisboa and the sample's perception of the images of Lisbon which allows the identification of opportunities to improve.N/

    Evaluation equations of external diaphragm connection with steel circular hollow section columns and wide flange steel beams, to include initial stiffness, yield strength, post yield stiffness and maximum strength, were deduced from regression analysis. Finally, the verification of the estimations with typical frames was conducted.
