Discourses of Collective Spirituality and Turkish Islamic Ethics:An Inquiry into Transcendence, Connectedness, and Virtuousness in Anatolian Tigers

    Get PDF
Based on case studies and qualitative interviews conducted with 40 stakeholders in five SMEs, or so called Anatolian tigers, in Turkey, this article has explored what collective spirituality and Turkish Islamic business ethics entail and how they shape organizational values using diverse stakeholder perspectives. The study has revealed six emergent discourses around collective spirituality and Islamic business ethics: Flying with both wings; striving to transcend egos; being devoted to each other; treating people as whole persons; upholding an ethics of compassion; and leaving a legacy for future generations. These discourses are organized around three themes of collective spirituality, respectively: Transcendence, connectedness, and virtuousness

    This study aimed to determine the mean values of the different morphometric measurements from right and left ears. These measurements were taken from 341 healthy young adults (150 women and 191 men) ages 18 to 25 years using an electronic digital caliper. The results showed the mean values for total ear height, lobular height and width, distances from tragus to antihelix and to helix, and ear projection and width to be, respectively, 59.7 ± 3 mm, 17.5 ± 1.4 mm, 18.5 ± 2.2 mm, 16.6 ± 1.7 mm, 25.1 ± 2 mm, 16.6 ± 2 mm, and 31.3 ± 2.2 mm for the left ear, and 59.5 ± 3.1 mm, 17.9 ± 1.5 mm, 18.9 ± 2 mm, 16.5 ± 1.8 mm, 25.2 ± 1.9 mm, 17 ± 1.9 mm, and 31.2 ± 2.2 mm for the right ear in the young women. However, in the young men, these values were, respectively, 63.1 ± 3.6 mm, 18.3 ± 1.7 mm, 19.4 ± 2 mm, 17.2 ± 1.8 mm, 26.3 ± 1.9 mm, 17 ± 2.3 mm, and 33.3 ± 2.2 mm for the left ear, and 62.9 ± 3.5 mm, 18.4 ± 1.7 mm, 19.8 ± 1.9 mm, 17.2 ± 1.8 mm, 26.6 ± 1.9 mm, 17.6 ± 2.1 mm, and 33.1 ± 2.1 mm for the right ear

PROBLEM: We investigated the beta2-glycoprotein I and anti-annexin V antibodies as anti-phospholipid-cofactor antibodies; and factor V G1691A Leiden, prothrombin G20210A, and methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase (MTHFR) C677T mutations as hereditary thrombophilia in recurrent pregnancy losses (RPL). METHOD OF STUDY: Study group consisted of 84 women with recurrent pregnancy loss and control group consisted of 84 women having at least one live birth. RESULTS: Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase C677T homozygous mutation was detected in 28.5% of the study group and in 14.2% of the controls, and the difference was highly significant (P < 0.001). Heterozygous mutation of this gene was found in 64.3% of the study population and in 38.1% of the controls, and difference in heterozygous mutation frequency was also significant (P < 0.001). Both homozygous and heterozygous mutations of PT G20210A and factor V G1691A were not different between the groups. There was no significant difference in anti-annexin V levels and anti-beta2-gp 1 levels of the groups. CONCLUSION: We concluded that both homozygous and heterozygous mutations of MTHFR C677T were related with RPL in Caucasian women

WOS: 000315443000023PubMed ID: 22941439In bullous middle turbinate surgery, controversy exists over which side of the bullous middle turbinate should be removed, as the distribution of human olfactory neuroepithelium is unclear. This study evaluated whether the middle turbinate tissue of patients undergoing endoscopic concha bullosa surgery contains functional olfactory epithelium. This prospective clinical study was conducted in tertiary referable center. It detected 70 conchae bullosa in 48 patients with sinonasal symptoms, who underwent paranasal computed tomography (CT) that showed pneumatization of the middle concha. All samples were obtained under general anesthesia. Three samples were obtained from each bullous middle turbinate: one each from the anterior, medial, and lateral portions. The mucosa from each sample was stained with olfactory marker protein (OMP). In total, 210 middle turbinate samples were taken from 48 patients during endoscopic surgery for conchae bullosa. The patients were 22 females and 26 males. Of the 70 conchae bullosa, OMP-stained nerve tissue was found in the lateral, anterior and medial aspects of 57 (81.4 %), 42 (60.0 %) and 23 (32.8 %) of the bullous middle turbinates, respectively. OMP-stained nerve tissue was found in 122 (58.1 %) of the 210 bullous middle turbinate tissue samples. OMP-stained nerve tissue was found on the lateral surface of the bullous middle turbinate more often than the medial surface. Therefore, during the concha bullosa surgery, OMP-stained nerve tissue found at least in the medial part of concha, suggested that the opening of the medial part of middle concha

Hoffa's disease is characterized by anterior knee pain secondary to inflammation of the infrapatellar fat pad. It is becoming increasingly diagnosed with the widespread use of magnetic resonance imaging. However, it can be easily under-diagnosed because of the different nomenclatures for the same clinical symptoms. Lack of awareness and knowledge about this disease may lead to incorrect or late diagnosis. In this manuscript, a 24-year-old woman who was admitted with anterior knee pain and diagnosed as Hoffa's disease is presented, and the pathophysiology, diagnosis, and management of this rare condition are discussed
