    Study of Stress Evolution of Germanium Nanocrystals Embedded in Silicon Oxide Matrix

    Germanium (Ge) nanocrystals had been synthesized by annealing co-sputtered SiO₂-Ge in N₂ and/or forming gas (90% N₂ + 10% H₂) at temperatures ranging from 700 to 1000°C from 15 to 60 min. It was concluded that the annealing ambient, temperature and time have a significant influence on the formation and evolution of the nanocrystals. We also showed that a careful selective etching of the annealed samples in hydrofluoric solution enabled the embedded Ge nanocrystals to be liberated from the Si oxide matrix. From the Raman results of the as-grown and the liberated nanocrystals, we established that the nanocrystals generally experienced compressive stress in the oxide matrix and the evolution of these stress states was intimately linked to the distribution, density, size and quality of the Ge nanocrystals.Singapore-MIT Alliance (SMA

    TEM Study on the Evolution of Ge Nanocrystals in Si Oxide Matrix as a Function of Ge Concentration and the Si Reduction Process

    Growth and evolution of germanium (Ge) nanocrystals embedded into a silicon oxide (SiO₂) system have been studied based on the Ge content of co-sputtered Ge-SiO₂ films using transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that when the proportion of Ge relative to Ge oxide is 20%, TEM showed that annealing the samples at 800°C for 60 min resulted in the formation of a denuded region between the silicon/silicon oxide (Si/SiO₂) interface and a band of Ge nanocrystals towards the surface of the film. By introducing a 20nm thick thermal oxide barrier on top of the silicon (Si) substrate on which the film is deposited, no denuded region in the bulk of this sample is observed. It is proposed that this barrier is effective in reducing both Ge diffusion into the Si substrate and Si diffusion from the substrate into the film. Si diffusing from the Si substrate reduces the Ge oxide into Ge which can subsequently diffuse into the Si substrate. However, the oxide barrier is able to confine the Ge within the oxide matrix so that the denuded region in the bulk of the film cannot form. However the reduction in diffusion should be more significant for Ge as its diffusion coefficient is lower than Si due to its larger size. It is suggested that the denuded region consists of amorphous Ge diffusing towards the Si/SiO₂ interface. When the Ge content is increased to slightly more than 70%, TEM showed that Ge nanocrysyals formed after annealing at 800°C for only 30 min for samples with and without the oxide barrier. There is no denuded region between the Ge nanocrystals band and the Si/SiO₂ interface for both samples but it was observed that coarsening effects were more prominent in the film deposited on top of the oxide barrier.     Muon anomalous magnetic moment in the standard model with two Higgs doublets

    The muon anomalous magnetic moment is investigated in the standard model with two Higgs doublets (S2HDM) motivated from spontaneous CP violation. Thus all the effective Yukawa couplings become complex. As a consequence of the non-zero phase in the couplings, the one loop contribution from the neutral scalar bosons could be positive and negative relying on the CP phases. The interference between one and two loop diagrams can be constructive in a large parameter space of CP-phases. This will result in a significant contribution to muon anomalous magnetic moment even in the flavor conserving process with a heavy neutral scalar boson (mhm_h \sim 200 GeV) once the effective muon Yukawa coupling is large (ξμ50|\xi_\mu|\sim 50). In general, the one loop contributions from lepton flavor changing scalar interactions become more important. In particular, when all contributions are positive in a reasonable parameter space of CP phases, the recently reported 2.6 sigma experiment vs. theory deviation can be easily explained even for a heavy scalar boson with a relative small Yukawa coupling in the S2HDM.Comment: 8 pages, RevTex file, 5 figures, published version Phys.     Anti-plane interfacial crack with functionally graded coating: static and dynamic

    The anti-plane displacement discontinuity method is applied to establish the Fredholm integral equation of the first kind for the orthotropic Functionally Graded Material (FGM) coatings subjected to static/dynamic shears. The shear modulus and mass density are assumed to vary exponentially through the thickness. The static and dynamic fundamental solutions with anti-plane displacement discontinuity are derived for orthotropic FGM coating by using Fourier transform method and Laplace transform method. It has been shown that the transformed fundamental solution with orthotropic coatings has the same order of hyper-singularity as in the static case, i.e. O(1/r2), and the Chebyshev polynomials of the second kind are used to solve the integral equations numerically. The time dependent stress intensity factors are obtained directly from the coefficients of the Chebyshev polynomials with the aid of Durbin’s Laplace transform inversion method. A comparative study of FGM versus homogeneous coating is conducted, and the dependence of the stress intensity factors in the coating/substrate system on the material property (orthotropic) and thickness of coating is examined. Two examples including the static/dynamic loads are given as benchmarks for the numerical methods and application in composite engineering

    B_c meson rare decays in the light-cone quark model

    We investigate the rare decays BcDs(1968)ˉB_c \rightarrow D_s(1968) \ell \bar{\ell} and BcDs(2317)ˉB_c\rightarrow D_s^*(2317) \ell \bar{\ell} in the framework of the light-cone quark model (LCQM). The transition form factors are calculated in the space-like region and then analytically continued to the time-like region via exponential parametrization. The branching ratios and longitudinal lepton polarization asymmetries (LPAs) for the two decays are given and compared with each other. The results are helpful to investigating the structure of BcB_c meson and to testing the unitarity of CKM quark mixing matrix.     Modelling, Simulation and Fuzzy Self-Tuning Control of D-STATCOM in a Single Machine Infinite Bus Power System

Methods: As a result, the power system becomes vulnerable to disturbances and instability. FACTS (Flexible AC Transmission Systems) technology has now been accepted as a potential solution to this problem. This paper deals with the modelling, simulation and fuzzy self-tuning control of a D-STATCOM to enhance the stability and improve the critical fault clearing time(CCT) in a single machine infinite bus (SMIB).A detailed modelling of the D-STATCOM and comprehensive derivation of the fuzzy logic self-tuning control is presented. Results: The dynamic performance of the power system with the proposed control scheme is validated through in a simulation study carried out under Matlab/Simulink and SimPowerSystems toolbox. Conclusion: The results demonstrate a significant enhancement of the power system stability under the simulated fault conditions considered.Peer reviewe

    A Study of Cosmic Ray Secondaries Induced by the Mir Space Station Using AMS-01

    The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS-02) is a high energy particle physics experiment that will study cosmic rays in the 100MeV\sim 100 \mathrm{MeV} to 1TeV1 \mathrm{TeV} range and will be installed on the International Space Station (ISS) for at least 3 years. A first version of AMS-02, AMS-01, flew aboard the space shuttle \emph{Discovery} from June 2 to June 12, 1998, and collected 10810^8 cosmic ray triggers. Part of the \emph{Mir} space station was within the AMS-01 field of view during the four day \emph{Mir} docking phase of this flight. We have reconstructed an image of this part of the \emph{Mir} space station using secondary π\pi^- and μ\mu^- emissions from primary cosmic rays interacting with \emph{Mir}. This is the first time this reconstruction was performed in AMS-01, and it is important for understanding potential backgrounds during the 3 year AMS-02 mission.Comment: To be submitted to NIM B Added material requested by referee.     Dilepton mass spectra in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)= 200 GeV and the contribution from open charm

    The PHENIX experiement has measured the electron-positron pair mass spectrum from 0 to 8 GeV/c^2 in p+p collisions at sqrt(s)=200 GeV. The contributions from light meson decays to e^+e^- pairs have been determined based on measurements of hadron production cross sections by PHENIX. They account for nearly all e^+e^- pairs in the mass region below 1 GeV/c^2. The e^+e^- pair yield remaining after subtracting these contributions is dominated by semileptonic decays of charmed hadrons correlated through flavor conservation. Using the spectral shape predicted by PYTHIA, we estimate the charm production cross section to be 544 +/- 39(stat) +/- 142(syst) +/- 200(model) \mu b, which is consistent with QCD calculations and measurements of single leptons by PHENIX.Comment: 375 authors from 57 institutions, 18 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables.
