A time-dependent coordinate transformation of a constant coeffcient hyperbolic equation which results in a variable coeffcient problem is considered. By using the energy method, we derive well-posed boundary conditions for the continuous problem. It is shown that the number of boundary conditions depend on the coordinate transformation. By using Summation-by-Parts (SBP) operators for the space discretization and weak boundary conditions, an energy stable finite dieffrence scheme is obtained. We also show how to construct a time-dependent penalty formulation that automatically imposes the right number of boundary conditions. Numerical calculations corroborate the stability and accuracy of the approximations
Asymptotically cylindrical 7-manifolds of holonomy G_2 with applications to compact irreducible G_2-manifolds
We construct examples of exponentially asymptotically cylindrical Riemannian
7-manifolds with holonomy group equal to G_2. To our knowledge, these are the
first such examples. We also obtain exponentially asymptotically cylindrical
coassociative calibrated submanifolds. Finally, we apply our results to show
that one of the compact G_2-manifolds constructed by Joyce by desingularisation
of a flat orbifold T^7/\Gamma can be deformed to one of the compact
G_2-manifolds obtainable as a generalized connected sum of two exponentially
asymptotically cylindrical SU(3)-manifolds via the method given by the first
author (math.DG/0012189).Comment: 36 pages; v2: corrected trivial typos; v3: some arguments corrected

Microscopic origin of Heisenberg and non-Heisenberg exchange interactions in ferromagnetic bcc Fe
By means of first principles calculations we investigate the nature of
exchange coupling in ferromagnetic bcc Fe on a microscopic level. Analyzing the
basic electronic structure reveals a drastic difference between the
orbitals of and symmetries. The latter ones define the shape of
the Fermi surface, while the former ones form weakly-interacting impurity
levels. We demonstrate that, as a result of this, in Fe the orbitals
participate in exchange interactions, which are only weakly dependent on the
configuration of the spin moments and thus can be classified as
Heisenberg-like. These couplings are shown to be driven by Fermi surface
nesting. In contrast, for the states the Heisenberg picture breaks down,
since the corresponding contribution to the exchange interactions is shown to
strongly depend on the reference state they are extracted from. Our analysis of
the nearest-neighbour coupling indicates that the interactions among
states are mainly proportional to the corresponding hopping integral and thus
can be attributed to be of double-exchange origin.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figure
Lithiation of InSb and CuSb : A Theoretical Investigation
In this work the mechanism of Li insertion/intercalation in the anode
materials InSb and CuSb is investigated by means of the first principles
total energy calculations. The total charge densities for the lithiated
products of the two compounds are presented. Based on these results the change
in the bonding character on lithiation is discussed. Further, the isomer shift
for InSb and CuSb and there various lithiated products is reported. The
average insertion/intercalation voltage and volume expansion for transitions
from InSb to LiInSb and CuSb to LiCuSb are calculated and found to
be in good agreement with the experimental values. These findings help to
resolve the controversy regarding the lithiation mechanism in InSb.Comment: 5 pages 3 figure
A method for atomistic spin dynamics simulations: implementation and examples
We present a method for performing atomistic spin dynamic simulations. A
comprehensive summary of all pertinent details for performing the simulations
such as equations of motions, models for including temperature, methods of
extracting data and numerical schemes for performing the simulations is given.
The method can be applied in a first principles mode, where all interatomic
exchange is calculated self-consistently, or it can be applied with frozen
parameters estimated from experiments or calculated for a fixed
spin-configuration. Areas of potential applications to different magnetic
questions are also discussed. The method is finally applied to one situation
where the macrospin model breaks down; magnetic switching in ultra strong
fields.Comment: 14 pages, 19 figure
Deductive synthesis of recursive plans in linear logic
Linear logic has previously been shown to be suitable for describing and deductively solving planning problems involving conjunction and disjunction. We introduce a recursively defined datatype and a corresponding induction rule, thereby allowing recursive plans to be synthesised. In order to make explicit the relationship between proofs and plans, we enhance the linear logic deduction rules to handle plans as a form of proof term
Conformally flat spacetimes and Weyl frames
We discuss the concepts of Weyl and Riemann frames in the context of metric
theories of gravity and state the fact that they are completely equivalent as
far as geodesic motion is concerned. We apply this result to conformally flat
spacetimes and show that a new picture arises when a Riemannian spacetime is
taken by means of geometrical gauge transformations into a Minkowskian flat
spacetime. We find out that in the Weyl frame gravity is described by a scalar
field. We give some examples of how conformally flat spacetime configurations
look when viewed from the standpoint of a Weyl frame. We show that in the
non-relativistic and weak field regime the Weyl scalar field may be identified
with the Newtonian gravitational potential. We suggest an equation for the
scalar field by varying the Einstein-Hilbert action restricted to the class of
conformally-flat spacetimes. We revisit Einstein and Fokker's interpretation of
Nordstr\"om scalar gravity theory and draw an analogy between this approach and
the Weyl gauge formalism. We briefly take a look at two-dimensional gravity as
viewed in the Weyl frame and address the question of quantizing a conformally
flat spacetime by going to the Weyl frame.Comment: LATEX - 18 page
Identification and Characterization of Post-activated B Cells in Systemic Autoimmune Diseases
Autoimmune diseases (AID) such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), primary Sjögren's syndrome (pSS), and rheumatoid arthritis (RA) are chronic inflammatory diseases in which abnormalities of B cell function play a central role. Although it is widely accepted that autoimmune B cells are hyperactive in vivo, a full understanding of their functional status in AID has not been delineated. Here, we present a detailed analysis of the functional capabilities of AID B cells and dissect the mechanisms underlying altered B cell function. Upon BCR activation, decreased spleen tyrosine kinase (Syk) and Bruton's tyrosine kinase (Btk) phosphorylation was noted in AID memory B cells combined with constitutive co-localization of CD22 and protein tyrosine phosphatase (PTP) non-receptor type 6 (SHP-1) along with hyporesponsiveness to TLR9 signaling, a Syk-dependent response. Similar BCR hyporesponsiveness was also noted specifically in SLE CD27- B cells together with increased PTP activities and increased transcripts for PTPN2, PTPN11, PTPN22, PTPRC, and PTPRO in SLE B cells. Additional studies revealed that repetitive BCR stimulation of normal B cells can induce BCR hyporesponsiveness and that tissue-resident memory B cells from AID patients also exhibited decreased responsiveness immediately ex vivo, suggesting that the hyporesponsive status can be acquired by repeated exposure to autoantigen(s) in vivo. Functional studies to overcome B cell hyporesponsiveness revealed that CD40 co-stimulation increased BCR signaling, induced proliferation, and downregulated PTP expression (PTPN2, PTPN22, and receptor-type PTPs). The data support the conclusion that hyporesponsiveness of AID and especially SLE B cells results from chronic in vivo stimulation through the BCR without T cell help mediated by CD40-CD154 interaction and is manifested by decreased phosphorylation of BCR-related proximal signaling molecules and increased PTPs. The hyporesponsiveness of AID B cells is similar to a form of functional anergy
Magnons in real materials from density-functional theory
We present an implementation of the adiabatic spin-wave dynamics of Niu and
Kleinman. This technique allows to decouple the spin and charge excitations of
a many-electron system using a generalization of the adiabatic approximation.
The only input for the spin-wave equations of motion are the energies and Berry
curvatures of many-electron states describing frozen spin spirals. The latter
are computed using a newly developed technique based on constrained
density-functional theory, within the local spin density approximation and the
pseudo-potential plane-wave method. Calculations for iron show an excellent
agreement with experiments.Comment: 1 LaTeX file and 1 postscript figur
Improved age constraints for the AB Dor quadruple system - The binary nature of AB Dor B
We present resolved NACO photometry of the close binary AB Dor B in H- and
Ks-band. AB Dor B is itself known to be a wide binary companion to AB Dor A,
which in turn has a very low-mass close companion named AB Dor C. These four
known components make up the young and dynamically interesting system AB Dor,
which will likely become a benchmark system for calibrating theoretical
pre-main sequence evolutionary mass tracks for low-mass stars. However, for
this purpose the actual age has to be known, and this subject has been a matter
of discussion in the recent scientific literature. We compare our resolved
photometry of AB Dor Ba and Bb with theoretical and empirical isochrones in
order to constrain the age of the system. This leads to an age estimate of
about 50 to 100 Myr. We discuss the implications of such an age range for the
case of AB Dor C, and compare with other results in the literature.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, accepted for publication in A&
