    Thermal phase diagrams of columnar liquid crystals

    In order to understand the possible sequence of transitions from the disordered columnar phase to the helical phase in hexa(hexylthio)triphenylene (HHTT), we study a three-dimensional planar model with octupolar interactions inscribed on a triangular lattice of columns. We obtain thermal phase diagrams using a mean-field approximation and Monte Carlo simulations. These two approaches give similar results, namely, in the quasi one-dimensional regime, as the temperature is lowered, the columns order with a linear polarization, whereas helical phases develop at lower temperatures. The helicity patterns of the helical phases are determined by the exact nature of the frustration in the system, itself related to the octupolar nature of the molecules.Comment: 12 pages, 9 figures, ReVTe

    Growth response and water relations of three-year-old planted black spruce and jack pine seedlings in site prepared lichen woodlands

    Black spruce-lichen woodlands are low tree density stands within the closed crown, North American boreal forest that represent a diverging post-fire type of black spruce forest. As natural densification of lichen woodlands has never been observed, afforestation remains the only way of shifting these stands to closed canopy stands. The objective of the study was to evaluate site preparation effects on growth and water relations of black spruce (Picea mariana (Mill.) B.S.P.) and jack pine (Pinus banksiana Lamb.) seedlings in black spruce-lichen woodlands (LW), compared to managed black spruce-feathermoss stands (BSFM). Site preparation treatments in LW were no preparation (LWno), patch scarification (LWps), and disk scarification (LWds). The operationally managed BSFM stands stood for the control. Results from the third growing season indicate that soil water availability in intact or lightly prepared patch scarified LW is a limiting variable for seedling growth for both black spruce and jack pine seedlings. However, once LW are prepared with disk scarification, this planting check factor is significantly reduced, to the point of being equal to BSFM in terms of water availability and seedling water relations. The significant seedling growth difference, in favor of BSFM, might be a consequence of the lower level of pre-plantation disturbance in LW, compared to BSFM. Our results also suggest that jack pine, through higher water stress tolerance, could constitute a wise silvicultural choice over black spruce, especially with LW established on coarse drought-prone material

    A shadowing problem in the detection of overlapping communities: lifting the resolution limit through a cascading procedure

    Community detection is the process of assigning nodes and links in significant communities (e.g. clusters, function modules) and its development has led to a better understanding of complex networks. When applied to sizable networks, we argue that most detection algorithms correctly identify prominent communities, but fail to do so across multiple scales. As a result, a significant fraction of the network is left uncharted. We show that this problem stems from larger or denser communities overshadowing smaller or sparser ones, and that this effect accounts for most of the undetected communities and unassigned links. We propose a generic cascading approach to community detection that circumvents the problem. Using real and artificial network datasets with three widely used community detection algorithms, we show how a simple cascading procedure allows for the detection of the missing communities. This work highlights a new detection limit of community structure, and we hope that our approach can inspire better community detection algorithms.Comment: 14 pages, 12 figures + supporting information (5 pages, 6 tables, 3 figures

    Reactive oxygen species and nuclear factor-kappa B pathway mediate high glucose-induced Pax-2 gene expression in mouse embryonic mesenchymal epithelial cells and kidney explants

    Diabetic mellitus confers a major risk of congenital malformations, and is associated with diabetic embryopathy, affecting multiple organs including the kidney. The DNA paired box-2 (Pax-2) gene is essential in nephrogenesis. We investigated whether high glucose alters Pax-2 gene expression and aimed to delineate its underlying mechanism(s) of action using both in vitro (mouse embryonic mesenchymal epithelial cells (MK4) and ex vivo (kidney explant from Hoxb7-green florescent protein (GFP) mice) approaches. Pax-2 gene expression was determined by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, Western blotting, and immunofluorescent staining. A fusion gene containing the full-length 5′-flanking region of the human Pax-2 promoter linked to a luciferase reporter gene, pGL-2/hPax-2, was transfected into MK4 cells with or without dominant negative IκBα (DN IκBα) cotransfection. Fusion gene expression level was quantified by cellular luciferase activity. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation was measured by lucigenin assay. Embryonic kidneys from Hoxb7-GFP mice were cultured ex vivo. High D(+) glucose (25mM), compared to normal glucose (5mM), specifically induced Pax-2 gene expression in MK4 cells and kidney explants. High glucose-induced Pax-2 gene expression is mediated, at least in part, via ROS generation and activation of the nuclear factor kappa B signaling pathway, but not via protein kinase C, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK), and p44/42 MAPK signaling

    "Pudding mold" band drives large thermopower in Nax_xCoO2_2

    In the present study, we pin down the origin of the coexistence of the large thermopower and the large conductivity in Nax_xCoO2_2. It is revealed that not just the density of states (DOS), the effective mass, nor the band width, but the peculiar {\it shape} of the a1ga_{1g} band referred to as the "pudding mold" type, which consists of a dispersive portion and a somewhat flat portion, is playing an important role in this phenomenon. The present study provides a new guiding principle for designing good thermoelectric materials.Comment: 5 page

    Dual electronic states in thermoelectric cobalt oxide

    We investigate the low temperature magnetic field dependence of the resistivity in the thermoelectric misfit cobalt oxide [Bi1.7Ca2O4]0.59CoO2 from 60 K down to 3 K. The scaling of the negative magnetoresistance demonstrates a spin dependent transport mechanism due to a strong Hund's coupling. The inferred microscopic description implies dual electronic states which explain the coexistence between localized and itinerant electrons both contributing to the thermopower. By shedding a new light on the electronic states which lead to a high thermopower, this result likely provides a new potential way to optimize the thermoelectric properties
