Ordinal logistic regression models have been developed for analysis of epidemiological studies. However, the adequacy of such models for adjustment has so far received little attention. In this article, we reviewed the most important ordinal regression models and common approaches used to verify goodness-of-fit, using R or Stata programs. We performed formal and graphical analyses to compare ordinal models using data sets on health conditions from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES II).Los modelos de regresión logística ordinal vienen aplicándose con éxito en el análisis de estudios epidemiológicos. Quantitative Determination of the Critical Points of Mott Metal-Insulator Transition in Strongly Correlated Systems

The Mottness is at the heart of the essential physics in a strongly correlated system as many novel quantum phenomena occur at the metallic phase near the Mott metal-insulator transition. We investigate the Mott metal-insulator transition in a strongly-correlated electron system based on the Hubbard model. The on-site moment evaluated by the dynamical mean-field theory is employed to depict the Mott metal-insulator transition. Conveniently, the on-site moment is a more proper order parameter to quantitatively determine the Mott critical point, in comparison with the corresponding quasiparticle coherent weight. Moreover, this order parameter also gives a consistent description of two distinct forms of the critical points of the Mott metal-insulator transition.Comment: 6 pages, 4 figure

Assessing Heavy Metal Pollution of the Largest Nature Reserve in Tianjin City, China

    Get PDF
Embargo until June 10, 2023Beidagang Wetland (BW) Nature Reserve is centrally situated in Tianjin City, experiencing an extreme industrial development. This study uses index characteristic analysis systems for assessing the individual and combined heavy metal pollution loading in the water during the spring and autumn seasons. By combining the pollution level of single pollutant, a more comprehensive evaluation of water quality in BW was achieved. Water quality was worst during autumn due to high level of Cd and Pb, which indicate the type of anthropogenic activities have a serious effect on heavy metal pollution in BW. In addition, high exchangeable amounts of Cd (> 40%) were found in the sediments of BW, indicating Cd pollution has emerged. There is a need for appropriate abatement actions curbing heavy metal loading and improving water quality of the BW Nature Reserve, thereby ensuring a sustainable management of its ecosystem services.acceptedVersio

A whole-cell bioreporter assay for quantitative genotoxicity evaluation of environmental samples

Whole-cell bioreporters have emerged as promising tools for genotoxicity evaluation, due to their rapidity, cost-effectiveness, sensitivity and selectivity. In this study, a method for detecting genotoxicity in environmental samples was developed using the bioluminescent whole-cell bioreporter Escherichia coli recA::luxCDABE. To further test its performance in a real world scenario, the E. coli bioreporter was applied in two cases: i) soil samples collected from chromium(VI) contaminated sites; ii) crude oil contaminated seawater collected after the Jiaozhou Bay oil spill which occurred in 2013. The chromium(VI) contaminated soils were pretreated by water extraction, and directly exposed to the bioreporter in two phases: aqueous soil extraction (water phase) and soil supernatant (solid phase). The results indicated that both extractable and soil particle fixed chromium(VI) were bioavailable to the bioreporter, and the solid-phase contact bioreporter assay provided a more precise evaluation of soil genotoxicity. For crude oil contaminated seawater, the response of the bioreporter clearly illustrated the spatial and time change in genotoxicity surrounding the spill site, suggesting that the crude oil degradation process decreased the genotoxic risk to ecosystem. In addition, the performance of the bioreporter was simulated by a modified cross-regulation gene expression model, which quantitatively described the DNA damage response of the E. coli bioreporter. Accordingly, the bioluminescent response of the bioreporter was calculated as the mitomycin C equivalent, enabling quantitative comparison of genotoxicities between different environmental samples. This bioreporter assay provides a rapid and sensitive screening tool for direct genotoxicity assessment of environmental samples

The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO), a 20 kton multi-purposeunderground liquid scintillator detector, was proposed with the determinationof the neutrino mass hierarchy as a primary physics goal. It is also capable ofobserving neutrinos from terrestrial and extra-terrestrial sources, includingsupernova burst neutrinos, diffuse supernova neutrino background, geoneutrinos, atmospheric neutrinos, solar neutrinos, as well as exotic searches such asnucleon decays, dark matter, sterile neutrinos, etc. We present the physicsmotivations and the anticipated performance of the JUNO detector for variousproposed measurements. By detecting reactor antineutrinos from two power plantsat 53-km distance, JUNO will determine the neutrino mass hierarchy at a 3-4sigma significance with six years of running. The measurement of antineutrinospectrum will also lead to the precise determination of three out of the sixoscillation parameters to an accuracy of better than 1\%. Neutrino burst from atypical core-collapse supernova at 10 kpc would lead to ~5000inverse-beta-decay events and ~2000 all-flavor neutrino-proton elasticscattering events in JUNO. Detection of DSNB would provide valuable informationon the cosmic star-formation rate and the average core-collapsed neutrinoenergy spectrum. Geo-neutrinos can be detected in JUNO with a rate of ~400events per year, significantly improving the statistics of existing geoneutrinosamples. The JUNO detector is sensitive to several exotic searches, e.g. protondecay via the pK++νˉp\to K^++\bar\nu decay channel. The JUNO detector will providea unique facility to address many outstanding crucial questions in particle andastrophysics. It holds the great potential for further advancing our quest tounderstanding the fundamental properties of neutrinos, one of the buildingblocks of our Universe

Shear Performance of Adhesive Bonding of Cross-Laminated Bamboo

    No full text
Tests were conducted of the bonding shear strength of different bamboo configurations in terms of grain direction, adhesive, and clamping pressure. The bonding shear tests were carried out with two basic configurations: glued together with the grain in the same direction, and cross-laminated. Five different adhesives were used: emulsion polymer isocyanate (EPI), polyurethane (PUR), melamine-ureaformaldehyde (MUF), hybrid polymer adhesive (HPA), and polyvinyl acetate (PVA). To assess the optimum value, specimens were prepared with three clamping pressures. According to the test results, the most suitable adhesive for glued laminated bamboo surface is MUF; EPI is not effective for bonding laminated bamboo elements, and PVA performs the best for scrimber produced with cross-laminated bamboo. The results also showed that end grain specimens had the highest bonding shear strengths among the four configurations, and that, in accordance with the properties of raw bamboo, cross-laminated types exhibited similar mechanical characteristics in both directions. It can be concluded that the testing method used for cross laminated timber is also suitable for assessing the shear strength of adhesive bonds for cross-laminated bamboo

Conference Name:2011 IEEE International Conference on Anti-Counterfeiting, Security and Identification, ASID 2011. Conference Address: Xiamen, China. Time:June 24, 2011 - June 26, 2011.IEEE Beijing Section; Xiamen UniversityThis paper describes an instrumentation amplifier for bidirectional high-side current sensing applications. It uses an advanced high-voltage process to design. To achieve high power supply voltage, the circuit adds a current source under the amplifier. So the circuit has a wide power supply voltage range from 4V-40V, and the input common-mode voltage of the amplifier also can go beyond its supply rail. The bipolar transistors as the input stages devices reduce the offset voltage. The amplifier uses the folded-casecode structure to increase the slew rate. Finally, the design has passed by the high-voltage BCD simulation library. ? 2011 IEEE
