Work-related musculoskeletal disorders, fatigue, and stress among gas station workers in China: a cross-sectional study
Introduction Work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSDs) are disorders of the musculoskeletal system that have the highest prevalence among workers worldwide. Workers in gas stations usually work in poor ergonomic working conditions, including prolonged standing and repetitive posturing.
Objective The study aimed to investigate the prevalence of WMSDs and fatigue and to identify the predictors of WMSDs among gas station workers.
Design The present study was a cross-sectional study.
Setting and participants 2962 gas station workers from an oil and gas company in China, with ages ranging from 17 to 75 years old, 55.47% female.
Results The prevalence of WMSDs within the 12 months prior to the study was 73.23%, with the highest prevalence in the neck, shoulders, ankles and feet. Furthermore, a correlation was observed between fatigue, stress and WMSDs. Fatigue and job role were the strongest predictors of WMSDs, with an OR range of 2.211–3.413.
Conclusions This research identified the detrimental impact of WMSDs and fatigue on gas station workers, indicating the critical need for interventions to reduce WMSDs and relieve fatigue
Influence of volute basic circle diameter on the pressure fluctuations and flow noise of a low specific speed sewage pump
To reveal the effect of the volute basic circle diameter D3 on the performance of low specific sewage pumps, three different volutes equipped with the same impeller were designed for a low specific speed sewage pump. The global characteristics were obtained from the experiments, which presented that the volute basic circle diameter affects pump performance obviously. Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) was adopted to analyze the flow in the pump, as well as the velocity and pressure fields. Acoustic software LMS Virtual.Lab was adopted to analyze the acoustic field characteristics of the different models. The particle image velocimetry (PIV) technology was adopted to verify the results obtained by CFD and the qualitative agreement of the velocity obtained by CFD numerical calculation and PIV measurement is very good. It shows that the volute basic circle diameter has a small influence on the velocity distribution in the impeller. However, it changes the flow in the volute significantly. As D3 increases, the 2D streamline smoothens and the velocity distribution becomes uniform, whereas the pressure fluctuations and radial force of the impeller weaken. Furthermore, when the volute basic circle diameter increases to a certain extent, the pressure fluctuations almost have no change. The flow induced noise in volute A# is the largest, whereas it is the smallest in volute B#. There is an optimal volute basic circle diameter for a pump with ultra-thick blade not only to achieve the highest efficiency, but also to achieve excellent operating stability
Case report: Abolishing primary resistance to PD-1 blockade by short-term treatment of lenvatinib in a patient with advanced metastatic renal cell carcinoma
Anti-PD-1 immunotherapy has been extensively used in treatment of patients with advanced metastatic renal cell carcinoma (mRCC). Several prospective clinical trials showed that the combined treatment of anti-PD-1 antibody plus lenvatinib, a potent receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (TKI), exhibited high response rate compared with single-agent sunitinib. However, whether the patients with primary resistance to PD-1 blockade could benefit from the addition of lenvatinib is still unclear. Herein, we reported a patient with mRCC who was primary resistant to pembrolizumab and achieved a durable complete response after a short-term treatment with lenvatinib. This case report indicates that the patients with primary resistance to anti-PD-1 therapy could benefit from the short-term lenvatinib in combination with anti-PD-1 therapy, and provides a useful paradigm worthy of establishing a clinical trial for mRCC patients with primary resistance to anti-PD-1 therapy
3D and 4D printable dual cross-linked polymers with high strength and humidity-triggered reversible actuation
It is highly desirable but challenging to develop humidity-responsive polymers with simultaneously improved mechanical properties and 3D printability, while still displaying fast, reversible and complex shape transformations. Herein, a facile and scalable supramolecular strategy of fabricating a new class of humidity-responsive polymers is proposed to address this issue. The multiple hydrogen-bond cross-linked network is used to provide high humidity sensitivity and shear-dependent rheological behavior. Further introduction of metal coordination bonds can not only improve mechanical strength and creep resistance, but also promote reversible humidity-driven actuation and generate viscoelastic hydrogel inks. This humidity-responsive polymer with these unique combined attributes enables the potential to fabricate diverse functional materials from artificial muscles, smart electronic and catalytic devices. Moreover, diverse arbitrary architectures with spatial thickness contrast exhibiting sophisticated biomimetic 4D printing process were manufactured by direct ink writing (DIW). This material and method not only provides a general route to tune versatile functionalities and intelligent responsiveness of polymeric actuators at the molecular level, but also provides new opportunities for building exceptional 4D printed products.Funding is gratefully acknowledged from the Australian

Result of a year-long animal survey in a state-owned forest farm in Beijing, China
BackgroundArtificial forest can have great potential in serving as habitat to wildlife, depending on different management methods. As the state-owned forest farms now play a new role in ecological conservation in China, the biological richness of this kind of land-use type is understudied. Once owned by a mining company, a largest state-owned forest farm, Jingxi Forest Farm, has been reformed to be a state-owned forest farm with the purpose of conservation since 2017. Although this 116.4 km2 forest farm holds a near-healthy montaine ecosystem very representative in North China, a large proportion of artificial coniferous forest in the forest farm has been proven to hold less biodiversity than natural vegetation. This situation, however, provides a great opportunity for ecological restoration and biodiversity conservation. Therefore, from November 2019 to December 2020, we conducted a set of biodiversity surveys, whose results will serve as a baseline for further restoration and conservation.New informationHere, we report the result of a multi-taxa fauna diversity survey conducted in Jingxi Forest Farm mainly in year 2020 with explicit spatial information. It is the first survey of its kind conducted in this area, revealing a total of 19 species of mammals, 86 birds, four reptiles, two amphibians and one fish species, as well as 101 species of insects. Four species of mammals are identified as data-poor species as they have less than 100 occurrence records with coordination in the GBIF database. One species of insect, representing one new provincial record genus of Beijing, is reported
A Comprehensive Expression Profile of MicroRNAs in Porcine Pituitary
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are an abundant class of small RNAs that regulate expressions of most genes. miRNAs play important roles in the pituitary, the “master” endocrine organ. However, we still don't know which role miRNAs play in the development of pituitary tissue or how much they contribute to the pituitary function. By applying a combination of microarray analysis and Solexa sequencing, we detected a total of 450 miRNAs in the porcine pituitary. Verification with RT-PCR showed a high degree of confidence for the obtained data. According to the current miRBase release17.0, the detected miRNAs included 169 known porcine miRNAs, 163 conserved miRNAs not yet identified in the pig, and 12 potentially new miRNAs not yet identified in any species, three of which were revealed using Northern blot. The pituitary might contain about 80.17% miRNA types belonging to the animal. Analysis of 10 highly expressed miRNAs with the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) indicated that the enriched miRNAs were involved not only in the development of the organ but also in a variety of inter-cell and inner cell processes or pathways that are involved in the function of the organ
The oyster genome reveals stress adaptation and complexity of shell formation
The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas belongs to one of the most species-rich but genomically poorly explored phyla, the Mollusca. Here we report the sequencing and assembly of the oyster genome using short reads and a fosmid-pooling strategy, along with transcriptomes of development and stress response and the proteome of the shell. The oyster genome is highly polymorphic and rich in repetitive sequences, with some transposable elements still actively shaping variation. Transcriptome studies reveal an extensive set of genes responding to environmental stress. The expansion of genes coding for heat shock protein 70 and inhibitors of apoptosis is probably central to the oyster's adaptation to sessile life in the highly stressful intertidal zone. Our analyses also show that shell formation in molluscs is more complex than currently understood and involves extensive participation of cells and their exosomes. The oyster genome sequence fills a void in our understanding of the Lophotrochozoa. © 2012 Macmillan Publishers Limited. All rights reserved
High-coverage whole-genome analysis of 1220 cancers reveals hundreds of genes deregulated by rearrangement-mediated cis-regulatory alterations.
The impact of somatic structural variants (SVs) on gene expression in cancer is largely unknown. Here, as part of the ICGC/TCGA Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium, which aggregated whole-genome sequencing data and RNA sequencing from a common set of 1220 cancer cases, we report hundreds of genes for which the presence within 100 kb of an SV breakpoint associates with altered expression. For the majority of these genes, expression increases rather than decreases with corresponding breakpoint events. Up-regulated cancer-associated genes impacted by this phenomenon include TERT, MDM2, CDK4, ERBB2, CD274, PDCD1LG2, and IGF2. TERT-associated breakpoints involve ~3% of cases, most frequently in liver biliary, melanoma, sarcoma, stomach, and kidney cancers. SVs associated with up-regulation of PD1 and PDL1 genes involve ~1% of non-amplified cases. For many genes, SVs are significantly associated with increased numbers or greater proximity of enhancer regulatory elements near the gene. DNA methylation near the promoter is often increased with nearby SV breakpoint, which may involve inactivation of repressor elements
Retrospective evaluation of whole exome and genome mutation calls in 746 cancer samples
Funder: NCI U24CA211006Abstract: The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and International Cancer Genome Consortium (ICGC) curated consensus somatic mutation calls using whole exome sequencing (WES) and whole genome sequencing (WGS), respectively. Here, as part of the ICGC/TCGA Pan-Cancer Analysis of Whole Genomes (PCAWG) Consortium, which aggregated whole genome sequencing data from 2,658 cancers across 38 tumour types, we compare WES and WGS side-by-side from 746 TCGA samples, finding that ~80% of mutations overlap in covered exonic regions. We estimate that low variant allele fraction (VAF < 15%) and clonal heterogeneity contribute up to 68% of private WGS mutations and 71% of private WES mutations. We observe that ~30% of private WGS mutations trace to mutations identified by a single variant caller in WES consensus efforts. WGS captures both ~50% more variation in exonic regions and un-observed mutations in loci with variable GC-content. Together, our analysis highlights technological divergences between two reproducible somatic variant detection efforts
