Towards a long-term record of solar total and spectral irradiance
The variation of total solar irradiance (TSI) has been measured since 1978
and that of the spectral irradiance for an even shorter amount of time.
Semi-empirical models are now available that reproduce over 80% of the measured
irradiance variations. An extension of these models into the more distant past
is needed in order to serve as input to climate simulations. Here we review our
most recent efforts to model solar total and spectral irradiance on time scales
from days to centuries and even longer. Solar spectral irradiance has been
reconstructed since 1947. Reconstruction of solar total irradiance goes back to
1610 and suggests a value of about 1-1.5 Wm for the increase in the
cycle-averaged TSI since the end of the Maunder minimum, which is significantly
lower than previously assumed but agrees with other modern models. First steps
have also been made towards reconstructions of solar total and spectral
irradiance on time scales of millennia

Dependence as a Unifying Construct in Defining Alzheimer's Disease Severity
This article reviews measures of Alzheimer's disease (AD) progression in relation to patient dependence and offers a unifying conceptual framework for dependence in AD. Clinicians typically characterize AD by symptomatic impairments in three domains: cognition, function, and behavior. From a patient's perspective, changes in these domains, individually and in concert, ultimately lead to increased dependence and loss of autonomy. Examples of dependence in AD range from a need for reminders (early AD) to requiring safety supervision and assistance with basic functions (late AD). Published literature has focused on the clinical domains as somewhat separate constructs and has given limited attention to the concept of patient dependence as a descriptor of AD progression. This article presents the concept of dependence on others for care needs as a potential method for translating the effect of changes in cognition, function, and behavior into a more holistic, transparent description of AD progression
Small Platforms, High Return: The Need to Enhance Investment in Small Satellites for Focused Science, Career Development, and Improved Equity
In the next decade, there is an opportunity for very high return on
investment of relatively small budgets by elevating the priority of smallsat
funding in heliophysics. We've learned in the past decade that these missions
perform exceptionally well by traditional metrics, e.g., papers/year/\$M
(Spence et al. 2022 -- arXiv:2206.02968). It is also well established that
there is a "leaky pipeline" resulting in too little diversity in leadership
positions (see the National Academies Report at
https://www.nationalacademies.org/our-work/increasing-diversity-in-the-leadership-of-competed-space-missions).
Prioritizing smallsat funding would significantly increase the number of
opportunities for new leaders to learn -- a crucial patch for the pipeline and
an essential phase of career development. At present, however, there are far
more proposers than the available funding can support, leading to selection
ratios that can be as low as 6% -- in the bottom 0.5th percentile of selection
ratios across the history of ROSES. Prioritizing SmallSat funding and
substantially increasing that selection ratio are the fundamental
recommendations being made by this white paper.Comment: White paper submitted to the Decadal Survey for Solar and Space
