Potential drivers of virulence evolution in aquaculture
Infectious diseases are economically detrimental to aquaculture, and with continued expansion and intensification of aquaculture, the importance of managing infectious diseases will likely increase in the future. Here, we use evolution of virulence theory, along with examples, to identify aquaculture practices that might lead to the evolution of increased pathogen virulence. We identify eight practices common in aquaculture that theory predicts may favor evolution toward higher pathogen virulence. Four are related to intensive aquaculture operations, and four others are related specifically to infectious disease control. Our intention is to make aquaculture managers aware of these risks, such that with increased vigilance, they might be able to detect and prevent the emergence and spread of increasingly troublesome pathogen strains in the future
Parameters of Pseudo-Random Quantum Circuits
Pseudorandom circuits generate quantum states and unitary operators which are
approximately distributed according to the unitarily invariant Haar measure. We
explore how several design parameters affect the efficiency of pseudo-random
circuits, with the goal of identifying relevant trade-offs and optimizing
convergence. The parameters we explore include the choice of single- and
two-qubit gates, the topology of the underlying physical qubit architecture,
the probabilistic application of two-qubit gates, as well as circuit size,
initialization, and the effect of control constraints. Building on the
equivalence between pseudo-random circuits and approximate -designs, a
Markov matrix approach is employed to analyze asymptotic convergence properties
of pseudo-random second-order moments to a 2-design. Quantitative results on
the convergence rate as a function of the circuit size are presented for qubit
topologies with a sufficient degree of symmetry. Our results may be
theoretically and practically useful to optimize the efficiency of random state

CERN West Area neutrino facility beam line alignment
This papers describes the alignment of the West Area Neutrino Beam Line at CERN to the two neutrino experiments CHORUS and NOMAD. The T9 neutrino (n) target position and the position of the magnetic horn were optimised using the secondary muon intensity profiles from the muon pits in the shielding. In the experiments the improved geometry provides a better centred beam (< 5 cm) and a measured increase in the n flux of 8%
Volcanic glass from the 1.8Â ka TaupĆ eruption (New Zealand) detected in Antarctic ice atâ~â230 CE.
Chemical anomalies in polar ice core records are frequently linked to volcanism; however, without the presence of (crypto)tephra particles, links to specific eruptions remain speculative. Correlating tephras yields estimates of eruption timing and potential source volcano, offers refinement of ice core chronologies, and provides insights into volcanic impacts. Here, we report on sparse rhyolitic glass shards detected in the Roosevelt Island Climate Evolution (RICE) ice core (West Antarctica), attributed to the 1.8 ka TaupĆ eruption (New Zealand)-one of the largest and most energetic Holocene eruptions globally. Six shards of a distinctive geochemical composition, identical within analytical uncertainties to proximal TaupĆ glass, are accompanied by a single shard indistinguishable from glass of theâ~25.5 ka Ćruanui supereruption, also from TaupĆ volcano. This double fingerprint uniquely identifies the source volcano and helps link the shards to the climactic phase of the TaupĆ eruption. The englacial TaupĆ-derived glass shards coincide with a particle spike and conductivity anomaly at 278.84 m core depth, along with trachytic glass from a local Antarctic eruption of Mt. Melbourne. The assessed age of the sampled ice is 230â±â19 CE (95% confidence), confirming that the published radiocarbon wiggle-match date of 232â±â10 CE (2 SD) for the TaupĆ eruption is robust
First evidence of white sharks, Carcharodon carcharias, in the tongue of the ocean, central Bahamas
The white shark, Carcharodon carcharias, is an iconic apex predator, playing an important ecological role across its range. Persistent bycatch and overfishing led to white shark declines, but recent studies in the North Western Atlantic (NWA) revealed evidence for regional recovery, and highlighted the importance of Southeastern Florida and the Gulf of Mexico as overwintering grounds for maturing white sharks. However, despite its proximity to Florida and comparably productive habitats, records of white sharks in The Bahamas are extremely rare, with a comprehensive survey of sightings and captures describing only one white shark between 1800 - 2010. Here, we reveal acoustic tracking detections of ten white sharks from 2020 - 2024 along the western edge of the Tongue of the Ocean off Central Andros Island, The Bahamas. White sharks were originally tagged off the coast of the United States and Canada, and detected off Andros Island, The Bahamas from November-May. White sharks were detected along the drop-off zone of the reef at ca. 25 m, exclusively between dusk and dawn, with the number of detections suggesting transient behavior. These findings expand our knowledge of white shark distribution in the NWA, highlighting data gaps in The Bahamas and underlining the importance of collaborative protective measures for species recovery
Banking from Leeds, not London: regional strategy and structure at the Yorkshire Bank, 1859â1952
Industrial philanthropist Edward Akroyd created the Yorkshire Penny Savings Bank in 1859. Despite competition from the Post Office Savings Bank after 1861 and a serious reserve problem in 1911, it sustained his overall strategy to become a successful regional bank. Using archival and contemporary sources to build on recent scholarship illustrating how savings banks were integrated into local economies and the complementary roles of philanthropy and paternalism, we analyse an English regional bank's strategy, including an assessment of strategic innovation, ownership changes and management structure. This will demonstrate that the founder's vision continued, even though the 1911 crisis radically altered both strategy and structure
Broad clinical phenotypes associated with TAR-DNA binding protein (TARDBP) mutations in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis
The finding of TDP-43 as a major component of ubiquitinated protein inclusions in amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) has led to the identification of 30 mutations in the transactive response-DNA binding protein (TARDBP) gene, encoding TDP-43. All but one are in exon 6, which encodes the glycine-rich domain. The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of TARDBP mutations in a large cohort of motor neurone disease patients from Northern England (42 non-superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) familial ALS (FALS), nine ALS-frontotemporal dementia, 474 sporadic ALS (SALS), 45 progressive muscular atrophy cases). We identified four mutations, two of which were novel, in two familial (FALS) and two sporadic (SALS) cases, giving a frequency of TARDBP mutations in non-SOD1 FALS of 5% and SALS of 0.4%. Analysis of clinical data identified that patients had typical ALS, with limb or bulbar onset, and showed considerable variation in age of onset and rapidity of disease course. However, all cases had an absence of clinically overt cognitive dysfunction
Production properties of K*(892) vector mesons and their spin alignment as measured in the NOMAD experiment
First measurements of K*(892) mesons production properties and their spin
alignment in nu_mu charged current (CC) and neutral current (NC) interactions
are presented. The analysis of the full data sample of the NOMAD experiment is
performed in different kinematic regions. For K*+ and K*- mesons produced in
nu_mu CC interactions and decaying into K0 pi+/- we have found the following
yields per event: (2.6 +/- 0.2 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))% and (1.6 +/- 0.1
(stat.) +/- 0.1 (syst.))% respectively, while for the K*+ and K*- mesons
produced in nu NC interactions the corresponding yields per event are: (2.5 +/-
0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.3 (syst.))% and (1.0 +/- 0.3 (stat.) +/- 0.2 (syst.))%. The
results obtained for the rho00 parameter, 0.40 +/- 0.06 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst)
and 0.28 +/- 0.07 (stat) +/- 0.03 (syst) for K*+ and K*- produced in nu_mu CC
interactions, are compared to theoretical predictions tuned on LEP measurements
in e+e- annihilation at the Z0 pole. For K*+ mesons produced in nu NC
interactions the measured rho00 parameter is 0.66 +/- 0.10 (stat) +/- 0.05

The Threat of Capital Drain: A Rationale for Public Banks?
This paper yields a rationale for why subsidized public banks may be desirable from a regional perspective in a financially integrated economy. We present a model with credit rationing and heterogeneous regions in which public banks prevent a capital drain from poorer to richer regions by subsidizing local depositors, for example, through a public guarantee. Under some conditions, cooperative banks can perform the same function without any subsidization; however, they may be crowded out by public banks. We also discuss the impact of the political structure on the emergence of public banks in a political-economy setting and the role of interregional mobility
Search for the exotic resonance in the NOMAD experiment
A search for exotic Theta baryon via Theta -> proton +Ks decay mode in the
NOMAD muon neutrino DIS data is reported. The special background generation
procedure was developed. The proton identification criteria are tuned to
maximize the sensitivity to the Theta signal as a function of xF which allows
to study the Theta production mechanism. We do not observe any evidence for the
Theta state in the NOMAD data. We provide an upper limit on Theta production
rate at 90% CL as 2.13 per 1000 of neutrino interactions.Comment: Accepted to European Physics Journal
