Outer jet X-ray and radio emission in R Aquarii: 1999.8 to 2004.0
Chandra and VLA observations of the symbiotic star R Aqr in 2004 reveal
significant changes over the three to four year interval between these
observations and previous observations taken with the VLA in 1999 and with
Chandra in 2000. This paper reports on the evolution of the outer thermal X-ray
lobe-jets and radio jets. The emission from the outer X-ray lobe-jets lies
farther away from the central binary than the outer radio jets, and comes from
material interpreted as being shock heated to ~10^6 K, a likely result of
collision between high speed material ejected from the central binary and
regions of enhanced gas density. Between 2000 and 2004, the Northeast (NE)
outer X-ray lobe-jet moved out away from the central binary, with an apparent
projected motion of ~580 km s^-1. The Southwest (SW) outer X-ray lobe-jet
almost disappeared between 2000 and 2004, presumably due to adiabatic expansion
and cooling. The NE radio bright spot also moved away from the central binary
between 2000 and 2004, but with a smaller apparent velocity than of the NE
X-ray bright spot. The SW outer lobe-jet was not detected in the radio in
either 1999 or 2004. The density and mass of the X-ray emitting material is
estimated. Cooling times, shock speeds, pressure and confinement are discussed.Comment: 23 pages, 8 figure
Ischemic Colitis Secondary to Ergotamine Use: A Case Study
A 48-year-old woman with a history of chronic migraines, initially admitted for inpatient management of intractable migraine headaches, developed new onset abdominal pain, hypotension, and diarrhea on hospital day number ten. In our institution's headache unit, patients are treated by a multidisciplinary approach, including individualized drug therapy based on diagnosis and previous response to therapy. Given the patient's hypotension and clinical appearance, she was transferred to the intensive care unit and treated for septic shock and metabolic acidosis. A bedside colonscopy revealed diffuse ischemic colitis. Final pathology after colon resection showed widespread, transmural necrosis of the colonic wall. We review the pathophysiology of ergotamine use and its potential association with ischemic colitis
Are the Faraday Rotating Magnetic Fields Local to Intracluster Radio Galaxies?
We investigate the origin of the high Faraday rotation measures (RMs) found
for polarized radio galaxies in clusters. The two most likely origins are,
magnetic fields local to the source, or magnetic fields located in the
foreground intra-cluster medium (ICM). The latter is identified as the null
hypothesis. Rudnick & Blundell (2003) have recently suggested that the presence
of magnetic fields local to the source may be revealed in correlations of the
position angles (PAs) of the source intrinsic linear polarization and the RMs.
We investigate the claim of Rudnick & Blundell to have found a relationship
between the intrinsic PA0 of the radio source PKS 1246-410 and its RM, by
testing the clustering strength of the PA0-RM scatter plot. We show that the
claimed relationship is an artifact of an improperly performed null-experiment.
We describe a gradient alignment statistic aimed at finding correlations
between PA0 and RM maps. This statistic does not require any null-experiment
since it gives a unique (zero) result in the case of uncorrelated maps. We
apply it to a number of extended radio sources in galaxy clusters (PKS
1246-410, Cygnus A, Hydra A, and 3C465). In no case is a significant
large-scale alignment of PA0 and RM maps detected. We find significant
small-scale co-alignment in all cases, but we are able to fully identify this
with map making artifacts through a suitable statistical test. We conclude that
there is presently no existing evidence for Faraday rotation local to radio
lobes. Given the existing independent pieces of evidence, we favor the null
hypothesis that the observed Faraday screens are produced by intracluster

NLTE solar irradiance modeling with the COSI code
Context. The solar irradiance is known to change on time scales of minutes to
decades, and it is suspected that its substantial fluctua- tions are partially
responsible for climate variations. Aims. We are developing a solar atmosphere
code that allows the physical modeling of the entire solar spectrum composed of
quiet Sun and active regions. This code is a tool for modeling the variability
of the solar irradiance and understanding its influence on Earth. Methods. We
exploit further development of the radiative transfer code COSI that now
incorporates the calculation of molecular lines. We validated COSI under the
conditions of local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) against the synthetic
spectra calculated with the ATLAS code. The synthetic solar spectra were also
calculated in non-local thermodynamic equilibrium (NLTE) and compared to the
available measured spectra. In doing so we have defined the main problems of
the modeling, e.g., the lack of opacity in the UV part of the spectrum and the
inconsistency in the calculations of the visible continuum level, and we
describe a solution to these problems. Results. The improved version of COSI
allows us to reach good agreement between the calculated and observed solar
spectra as measured by SOLSTICE and SIM onboard the SORCE satellite and ATLAS 3
mission operated from the Space Shuttle. We find that NLTE effects are very
important for the modeling of the solar spectrum even in the visual part of the
spectrum and for its variability over the entire solar spectrum. In addition to
the strong effect on the UV part of the spectrum, NLTE effects influence the
concentration of the negative ion of hydrogen, which results in a significant
change of the visible continuum level and the irradiance variability.Comment: 14 pages, 14 figures, accepted for publication in

The Pulsation of Chi Cygni Imaged by Optical Interferometry; a Novel Technique to Derive Distance and Mass of Mira Stars
We present infrared interferometric imaging of the S-type Mira star Chi
Cygni. The object was observed at four different epochs in 2005-2006 with the
IOTA optical interferometer (H band). Images show up to 40% variation in the
stellar diameter, as well as significant changes in the limb darkening and
stellar inhomogeneities. Model fitting gave precise time-dependent values of
the stellar diameter, and reveals presence and displacement of a warm molecular
layer. The star radius, corrected for limb darkening, has a mean value of 12.1
mas and shows a 5.1mas amplitude pulsation. Minimum diameter was observed at
phase 0.94+/-0.01. Maximum temperature was observed several days later at phase
1.02+/-0.02. We also show that combining the angular acceleration of the
molecular layer with CO (Delta v = 3) radial velocity measurements yields a
5.9+/-1.5 mas parallax. The constant acceleration of the CO molecules -- during
80% of the pulsation cycle -- lead us to argument for a free-falling layer. The
acceleration is compatible with a gravitational field produced by a
2.1(+1.5/-0.7) solar mass star. This last value is in agreement with
fundamental mode pulsator models. We foresee increased development of
techniques consisting in combining radial velocity with interferometric angular
measurements, ultimately allowing total mapping of the speed, density, and
position of the diverse species in pulsation driven atmospheres.Comment: 36 pages, accepted in Ap
Detection of circumstellar material in a normal Type Ia Supernova
Type Ia supernovae are thought to be thermonuclear explosions of accreting
white dwarfs that reach a critical mass limit. Despite their importance as
cosmological distance indicators, the nature of their progenitors has remained
controversial. Here we report the detection of circumstellar material in a
normal Type Ia supernova. The expansion velocities, densities and dimensions of
the circumstellar envelope indicate that this material was ejected from the
progenitor system. The relatively low expansion velocities appear to favor a
progenitor system where a white dwarf accretes material from a companion star
