    Perceptual and Cardiorespiratory Responses to High-Intensity Interval Exercise in Adolescents: Does Work Intensity Matter?

The final version is available from the University of Uludag via the URL in this record.Objectives: High-intensity interval exercise (HIIE) may not elicit prominent unpleasant feelings even with elevated perceived exertion and physiological stress in adolescents. However, the influence of different HIIE work intensities on the affective experience and cardiorespiratory responses is unknown. This study examined the acute affective, enjoyment, perceived exertion and cardiorespiratory responses to HIIE with different work intensities in adolescents. Methods: Participants (N=16; 8 boys; age 12.0 ± 0.3 years) performed, on separate days, HIIE conditions consisting of 8 x 1-minute work-intervals at 70%, 85%, or 100% peak power separated by 75 seconds recovery at 20 W. Affect, enjoyment and rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were recorded before, during, and after HIIE. Heart rate (HR) and oxygen uptake were collected during HIIE. Results: Affect declined in all conditions (P1.74; 70%HIIE=2.5±0.8; 85%HIIE=1.1±1.5; 100%HIIE=-1.5±1.4 on 13 feeling scale). Similar enjoyment was evident during and after all conditions (all P>0.44). RPE was significantly higher during 100%HIIE than 70%HIIE and 85%HIIE across all work-intervals (all P1.56). The majority of the participants attained ≥90%HRmax during 85%HIIE (87%) and 100%HIIE (100%), but not during 70%HIIE (6%). Conclusions: Affect responses during HIIE are dependent on the intensity of the work-interval and are not entirely negative (unpleasant feelings). Despite similar enjoyment, positive affect experienced during 70%HIIE and 85%HIIE could serve as a strategy to encourage exercise adoption and adherence in adolescents, but only 85%HIIE elicits sufficient HR stimulus to facilitate potential health 21 benefits

    Methods for the prediction of the impact of groundwater abstraction on East Anglian wetlands

    This is the final report of the Anglian Regional Operational Investigation 558 : "The Protection of East Anglian Wetlands". The objective of the project was the development of methodologies for evaluation of the likely impact of groundwater abstraction on wetland sites. The methodologies should be suitable for use at all wetland sites in East Anglia, regardless of the amount of data available for the site. A primary requirement of the methodologies is that they should indicate whether a wetland might be at risk from proposed abstractions. In the Terms of Reference, the project objective was defined in relation to the groundwater catchments of wetland sites. The project was run in two phases, and in the course of the first phase the significance of groundwater catchments in the protection of wetlands from the effects of groundwater abstraction was examined. It was concluded that identification of the groundwater catchment was not required when assessing the possibility of the wetland being adversely affected by a specific groundwater abstraction. The emphasis of the project thus changed to a consideration of wetland behaviour in response to variations in water budget, and to the effect of groundwater pumping on that water budget. The maintenance of wetlands in a low-rainfall region depends upon groundwater inputs, but groundwater is not the only important component of the water budget. In this report emphasis is placed on the construction of a simple but comprehensive water budget model, on a monthly timescale, that will predict the impact of changes in the groundwater supply on water levels in the wetland, most importantly during the summer months and in drought years. This MIROS model, which can be used for sites with no local data but can also be refined to take account of available data, has been developed in the form of a spreadsheet. Prohibition of abstractions that would cause any fall whatsoever in water levels at wetland sites is not a practical solution. For a given wetland site, predicted changes in water level and flow, resulting from a proposed groundwater abstraction, should be evaluated by an objective procedure which must recognise the water needs of plant communities. As an improvement to the simple Theis method for predicting the propagation of impacts through the aquifer, a new well function has been developed to quantify the effect of pumping on an idealised wetland. The analytical model characterises a wetland by its size, expressed as an effective radius, and a parameter which is a measure of the resistance to flow between the underlying aquifer and the wetland. Quantitative measures of the physical habitat needs of wetland plants are difficult to establish, but one approach based on field evaluation has confirmed the value of the Sum Exceedance Value (SEV) as a measure of the length and intensity of summer drought in wetland soils. The SEV can be calculated from measured or modelled water-level data on an annual or long term average basis. In this report, the combination of the MIROS model with the SEV method has been used as one means of estimating the maximum acceptable drawdown in the wetland. The results lead to a suite of methodologies which allows an assessment of the susceptibility of a wetland to a specific proposed abstraction to be made, regardless of the amount of data available. These allow more data to be used, when available, to further quantify the wetland water budget

    Effect of a program of short bouts of exercise on bone health in adolescents involved in different sports: the PRO-BONE study protocol

Early prevention during adolescence appears to be one of the most beneficial practices. Exercise is an effective approach for developing bone mass during puberty, but some sports may have a positive or negative impact on bone mass accrual. Plyometric jump training has been suggested as a type of exercise that can augment bone, but its effects on adolescent bone mass have not been rigorously assessed. The aims of the PRO-BONE study are to: 1) longitudinally assess bone health and its metabolism in adolescents engaged in osteogenic (football), non-osteogenic (cycling and swimming) sports and in a control group, and 2) examine the effect of a 9 month plyometric jump training programme on bone related outcomes in the sport groups. Methods/Design: This study will recruit 105 males aged 12-14 years who have participated in sport specific training for at least 3 hours per week during the last 3 years in the following sports groups: football (n=30), cycling (n=30) and swimming (n=30). An age-matched control group (n=15) that does not engage in these sports more than 3 hours per week will also be recruited. Participants will be measured on 5 occasions: 1) at baseline; 2) after 12 months of sport specific training where each sport group will be randomly allocated into two sub-groups: intervention group (sport + plyometric jump training) and sport group (sport only); 3) exactly after the 9 months of intervention; 4) 6 months following the intervention; 5) 12 months following the intervention. Body composition (dual energy X-ray absorptiometry, air displacement plethysmography and bioelectrical impedance), bone stiffness index (ultrasounds), physical activity (accelerometers), diet (24 h recall questionnaire), pubertal maturation (Tanner stage), physical fitness (cardiorespiratory and muscular) and biochemical markers of bone formation and resorption will be measured at each visit.     The Star Formation History and Dust Content in the Far Outer Disc of M31

    We present a detailed analysis of two fields located 26 kpc (~5 scalelengths) from the centre of M31. One field samples the major axis populations--the Outer Disc field--while the other is offset by ~18' and samples the Warp in the stellar disc. The CMDs based on HST/ACS imaging reach old main-sequence turn-offs (~12.5 Gyr). We apply the CMD-fitting technique to the Warp field to reconstruct the star formation history (SFH). We find that after undergoing roughly constant SF until about 4.5 Gyr ago, there was a rapid decline in activity and then a ~1.5 Gyr lull, followed by a strong burst lasting 1.5 Gyr and responsible for 25% of the total stellar mass in this field. This burst appears to be accompanied by a decline in metallicity which could be a signature of the inflow of metal-poor gas. The onset of the burst (~3 Gyr ago) corresponds to the last close passage of M31 and M33 as predicted by detailed N-body modelling, and may have been triggered by this event. We reprocess the deep M33 outer disc field data of Barker et al. (2011) in order to compare consistently-derived SFHs. This reveals a similar duration burst that is exactly coeval with that seen in the M31 Warp field, lending further support to the interaction hypothesis. The complex SFHs and the smoothly-varying age-metallicity relations suggest that the stellar populations observed in the far outer discs of both galaxies have largely formed in situ rather than migrated from smaller galactocentric radii. The strong differential reddening affecting the CMD of the Outer Disc field prevents derivation of the SFH. Instead, we quantify this reddening and find that the fine-scale distribution of dust precisely follows that of the HI gas. This indicates that the outer HI disc of M31 contains a substantial amount of dust and therefore suggests significant metal enrichment in these parts, consistent with inferences from our CMD analysis.Comment: Abstract shortened. 17 pages, 12 figures (+ 6 pages & 5 figures in Appendix).     Soft tissues, areal bone mineral density and hip geometry estimates in active young boys: The PRO-BONE study

Available from Springer Verlag via the DOI in this record.Purpose: Soft tissues, such as fat mass (FM) and lean mass (LM), play an important role in bone development but this is poorly understood in highly active youths. The objective of this study was to determine whether FM or LM is a stronger predictor of areal bone mineral density (aBMD) and hip geometry estimates in a group of physically active boys after adjusting for height, chronological age, moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA), FM, and LM. Methods: Participants included 121 boys (13.1±1.0 years) from the PRO-BONE study. Bone mineral content (BMC) and aBMD measured at total body, femoral neck and lumbar spine using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), and hip structural analysis was used to estimate bone geometry at the femoral neck. Body composition was assessed using DXA. The relationships of FM and LM with bone outcomes were analysed using simple and multiple linear regression analyses. Results: Pearson correlation coefficients showed that total body (less head) aBMD was significantly correlated with LM but not FM. Multiple linear regression analyses showed that FM, after accounting for height, age, MVPA and LM had no significant relationship with aBMD or hip geometry estimates, except for arms aBMD. By contrast, there were positive associations between LM and most aBMD and hip geometry estimates, after accounting height, age, MVPA and FM. Conclusions: The results of this study suggest that LM, and not FM, is the stronger predictor of aBMD and hip geometry estimates in physically active boys.The research leading to these results has received funding from the European Union Seventh Framework Programme ([FP7/2007–2013] under grant agreement no.     Promotion of physical activity for adolescents with cystic fibrosis: a qualitative study of UK multi disciplinary cystic fibrosis teams

    Background: The Cystic Fibrosis Trust recently published a standards of care document which stated that patients should be given a physical activity (PA) programme based on their motivations, fitness, and willingness to be active. However, there remains much debate regarding the roles and responsibilities for PA promotion, as well as “optimal” recommendations and advice. This study aimed to qualitatively explore cystic fibrosis (CF) multidisciplinary teams (MDTs) advice, recommendations and practices relating to PA promotion for adolescents with CF. / Method: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with fifteen members of CF MDTs (11 physiotherapists, two dieticians and two paediatricians). Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. / Results: Major themes identified were: (1) structure of MDTs, (2) recommendations relating to intensities, durations and types of PA, and (3) use of exercise testing. Participants reported variation between MDTs in terms of who is responsible for promoting and supporting PA, the nature of advice given to patients, and the use of exercise testing. Participants consistently lacked confidence in their own or others’ knowledge to provide standardised recommendations to patients and highlighted that PA promotion and support was often overlooked during busy periods. / Conclusions: Despite its importance, PA support and promotion is not always prioritised. MDTs lack confidence in their ability to promote PA. Standardised advice and training relating to optimal intensities, durations and types of PA would provide a baseline from which to individualise advice to each patient and could increase confidence in PA promotion among MDTs

    Size Segregation and Convection of Granular Mixtures Almost Completely Packed in the Rotating Thin Box

    Size segregation of granular mixtures which are almost completely packed in a rotating drum is discussed with an effective simulation and a brief analysis. Instead of a 3D drum, we simulate 2D rotating thin box which is almost completely packed with granular mixtures. The phase inversion of radially segregated pattern which was found in a 3D experiment are qualitatively reproduced with this simulation, and a brief analysis is followed.     A low H I column density filament in NGC 2403 : signature of interaction or accretion

    Date of acceptance: 12/07/2014Observed H i accretion around nearby galaxies can only account for a fraction of the gas supply needed to sustain the currently observed star formation rates. It is possible that additional accretion occurs in the form of low column density cold flows, as predicted by numerical simulations of galaxy formation. To constrain the presence and properties of such flows, we present deep H i observations obtained with the NRAO Green Bank Telescope of an area measuring 4° × 4° around NGC 2403. These observations, with a 5σ detection limit of 2.4 × 1018 cm-2 over a 20 km s-1 linewidth, reveal a low column density, extended cloud outside the main H i disk, about 17′ (~ 16 kpc or ~ 2 R25) to the NW of the center of the galaxy. The total H i mass of the cloud is 6.3 × 106 M⊙, or 0.15 percent of the total H i mass of NGC 2403. The cloud is associated with an 8 kpc anomalous-velocity H i filament in the inner disk, that was previously observed in deep VLA observations. We discuss several scenarios for the origin of the cloud, and conclude that it is either accreting from the intergalactic medium, or is the result of a minor interaction with a neigboring dwarf galaxyPeer reviewe
