    For this design project, we worked with Dr. Mary Ruppert-Stroescu from the Sam Fox School of Design and Visual Arts to create a device that dispenses t-shirt strips. Dr. Ruppert-Stroescu has a patented process where strips of cloth are laid down on a sticky backing paper and sewn together to be made into new clothing. Our goal was to streamline the strip-laying process, making it less tedious and time consuming

    Quality of the parent-child interaction in young children with type 1 diabetes mellitus: study protocol

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>In young children with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) parents have full responsibility for the diabetes-management of their child (e.g. blood glucose monitoring, and administering insulin). Behavioral tasks in childhood, such as developing autonomy, and oppositional behavior (e.g. refusing food) may interfere with the diabetes-management to achieve an optimal blood glucose control. Furthermore, higher blood glucose levels are related to more behavioral problems. So parents might need to negotiate with their child on the diabetes-management to avoid this direct negative effect. This interference, the negotiations, and the parent's responsibility for diabetes may negatively affect the quality of parent-child interaction. Nevertheless, there is little knowledge about the quality of interaction between parents and young children with T1DM, and the possible impact this may have on glycemic control and psychosocial functioning of the child. While widely used global parent-child interaction observational methods are available, there is a need for an observational tool specifically tailored to the interaction patterns of parents and children with T1DM. The main aim of this study is to construct a disease-specific observational method to assess diabetes-specific parent-child interaction. Additional aim is to explore whether the quality of parent-child interactions is associated with the glycemic control, and psychosocial functioning (resilience, behavioral problems, and quality of life).</p> <p>Methods/Design</p> <p>First, we will examine which situations are most suitable for observing diabetes-specific interactions. Then, these situations will be video-taped in a pilot study (N = 15). Observed behaviors are described into rating scales, with each scale describing characteristics of parent-child interactional behaviors. Next, we apply the observational tool on a larger scale for further evaluation of the instrument (N = 120). The parents are asked twice (with two years in between) to fill out questionnaires about psychosocial functioning of their child with T1DM. Furthermore, glycemic control (HbA<sub>1c</sub>) will be obtained from their medical records.</p> <p>Discussion</p> <p>A disease-specific observational tool will enable the detailed assessment of the quality of diabetes-specific parent-child interactions. The availability of such a tool will facilitate future (intervention) studies that will yield more knowledge about impact of parent-child interactions on psychosocial functioning, and glycemic control of children with T1DM.</p

    Ptf1a Binds to and Activates Area III, a Highly Conserved Region of the Pdx1 Promoter That Mediates Early Pancreas-Wide Pdx1 Expressionâ–ż

    The critical pancreatic transcription factor Pdx1 is expressed throughout the pancreas early but enriched in insulin-producing β cells postnatally. Previous studies showed that the 5′ conserved promoter regions areas I and II (Pdx1PB) direct endocrine cell expression, while an adjacent region (Pdx1XB) containing conserved area III directs transient β-cell expression. In this study, we used Cre-mediated lineage tracing to track cells that activated these regions. Pdx1PBCre mediated only endocrine cell recombination, while Pdx1XBCre directed broad and early recombination in the developing pancreas. Also, a reporter transgene containing areas I, II, and III was expressed throughout the embryonic day 10.5 (E10.5) pancreas and gradually became β cell enriched, similar to endogenous Pdx1. These data suggested that sequences within area III mediate early pancreas-wide Pdx1 expression. Area III contains a binding site for PTF1, a transcription factor complex essential for pancreas development. This site contributed to area III-dependent reporter gene expression in the acinar AR42J cell line, while PTF1 specifically trans-activated area III-containing reporter expression in a nonpancreatic cell line. Importantly, Ptf1a occupied sequences spanning the endogenous PTF1 site in area III of E11.5 pancreatic buds. These data strongly suggest that PTF1 is an important early activator of Pdx1 in acinar and endocrine progenitor cells during pancreas development

    A Case of Infantile Meningioangiomatosis with a Separate Cyst

    Meningioangiomatosis (MA) is a rare congenital tumor that occurs mostly in 5-15 year old children. There have been only 5 cases previously reported that described the cystic nature within these tumors. We present a case of a MA accompanied by a separate macrocyst. A normally developed 2 year-old female patient presented with partial and generalized seizures. The brain computerized tomogram and magnetic resonance imaging revealed the presence of a calcified mass accompanied by a cyst in the right parietal area, surrounded by low density and high attenuation edema and hemorrhage. Upon right parietal craniotomy, a 1.6 cm Ă— 1.2 cm Ă— 0.5 cm sized plate-like, gray-white, slightly hard mass was seen and it was completely excised. Approximately 1 cm from the mass in the anterior lateral direction, a cyst was found and subsequent biopsy of the cyst wall revealed no tumor tissue, and therefore the cyst was not removed. Pathologic report demonstrated the meningioangiomatosis. Follow up examination 2 years later showed no recurrence of the tumor, and there was no evidence of neurological deficits. Authors suggest that cysts that arise in the surrounding tissues of tumors may not be tumor cysts, and do not require surgical removal
